A historical case of beaten-copper cranium
2007
The authors present the oldest historical case of a so-called beaten-copper cranium. The typical pattern was identified on a skull from a child, probably a boy, who died at approximately 6 years of age and was buried in a provisional cemetery used during the siege of Hanau, Germany, in 1635 and 1636. Morphological and radiological analyses of the severe digitate impressions ubiquitous on the child's endocranium support the diagnosis of chronically elevated intracranial pressure due to hydrocephalus.
This article aims to contribute to the intellectual renewal trend that has opened in recent years with the so-called new political history. Specifically, it aims to address the problem of hunger in a city during a war (the war of the Two Peters) focusing on the policies that their leaders applied and whether they were …
Algorithmic approaches to Siegel's fundamental domain
2017
Siegel determined a fundamental domain using the Minkowski reduction of quadratic forms. He gave all the details concerning this domain for genus 1. It is the determination of the Minkowski fundamental domain presented as the second condition and the maximal height condition, presented as the third condition, which prevents the exact determination of this domain for the general case. The latest results were obtained by Gottschling for the genus 2 in 1959. It has since remained unexplored and poorly understood, in particular the different regions of Minkowski reduction. In order to identify Siegel's fundamental domain for genus 3, we present some results concerning the third condition of thi…
Al-Tābisī and His Descendants: The Failed Integration of a Military Andalusi Family into the Christian Society of the Kingdom of Valencia (1238–1283)
2018
Although the life of al-Tābisi is shrouded in mystery, the evidence suggests that he was the descendant of one of the Andalusi military lineages that abandoned the Lower Ebro after the Catalonian occupation in the mid-twelfth century. During the Conquest of Valencia, al-Tābisi collaborated with the King of Aragon (probably as a member of the entourage of the sayyid Abū Zayd), with whom he participated in the siege of the city of Valencia (1238) and the subsequent war against al-Azraq (1258). His services were rewarded with land in the Huerta of Valencia, as well as several castles in the southern frontier of the kingdom. His descendants converted to Christianity, preserving references to th…
2019
What should be done with a site where state terrorism was once waged? In the past few decades, many have been transformed into places of remembrance where the traumatic events that affected the whole community can be addressed. During Argentina?s last dictatorship (1976-1983), state terrorism forged a new figure, that of the ?detained-disappeared,? and the country?s detention, torture and extermination centres were the last places where these people were seen alive. That materiality, and the resignification of such sites as symbolic, is what make these locations transcendental. Perhaps, then, the question is not what needs to be represented at these sites, but what needs to be represented t…
