What comes first: Combining motion capture and eye tracking data to study the order of articulators in constructed action in sign language narratives
2020
We use synchronized 120 fps motion capture and 50 fps eye tracking data from two native signers to investigate the temporal order in which the dominant hand, the head, the chest and the eyes start producing overt constructed action from regular narration in seven short Finnish Sign Language stories. From the material, we derive a sample of ten instances of regular narration to overt constructed action transfers in ELAN which we then further process and analyze in Matlab. The results indicate that the temporal order of articulators shows both contextual and individual variation but that there are also repeated patterns which are similar across all the analyzed sequences and signers. Most not…
The Relationship between Knowing Sign Language and Quality of Life among Italian People Who Are Deaf: A Cross-Sectional Study
2023
Deafness is a medical condition with important relational implications. This condition could affect well-being and self-esteem and cause social anxiety. Sign language is not only a simple mimic but can be considered as a different kind of communication that could be protective for those who have learned it. However, some people do not use sign language because they think it can be marginalizing. The present study aimed to compare the quality of life (QoL) between people who learned Italian sign language as their first language with those who had never learned it or learned it later. This cross-sectional study involved 182 deaf Italian adults (70.3% females) who were recruited from Ente Nazi…
Chaining in interpreted interaction : Finnish Sign Language interpreting in an English-medium educational setting
2016
Interaction is always multimodal. Multimodality means that meanings are conveyed by using different semiotic resources, such as language, gestures, facial expressions, written text and pictures. Even though it is considered that also interpreted interaction is multimodal, this aspect of the interpreters’ work is often neglected in research and focus on how interpreters utilize multimodality in their work is called for. In this study one English-medium lecture that is interpreted into Finnish Sign Language is analyzed. The lecture’s duration is approximately one hour. The focus is on one multimodal phenomenon: chaining. Chaining means that different semiotic resources are utilized, for examp…

How long is the sign?
2015
AbstractThis paper deals with the relative empirical length of signs in sign languages and provides evidence for the view that they are actually longer units than has hitherto been recognized. The evidence is presented from two perspectives: those of sign articulation and sign recognition. Concerning sign articulation, it is suggested that signs are longer units than is currently assumed because most of the structural features of signs are in fact already present before the currently accepted beginnings of signs and they continue after signs' generally accepted endings. Concerning sign recognition, the longer view of the sign is proposed on the grounds that the recognition point of signs is…
I segni parlano.

Utterance fluency in Finnish Sign Language L1 and L2 signing
2021
This paper explores the fluency of first language (L1) and second language (L2) signers of Finnish Sign Language. The phenomenon was approached by measuring utterance fluency using speed and breakdown parameters. The findings revealed clear differences between L1 and L2 signers regarding the measured fluency parameters. On average, L1 signers produced more signs and had fewer breakdowns per minute than L2 signers. However, the slowest L1 signer and the fastest L2 signer were more similar to each other than the averages of the L1 group’s (129.3) and the L2 group’s (71.4) signs per minute might suggest. The number of breakdowns per minute differed between the groups, with L2 signers breaking …
English in interpretation to Finnish Sign Language : the forms and functions of chaining sequences in educational interpreting
2017
Tässä tutkimuksessa selvitettiin ketjutusta (chaining) kieleilyn (languaging) käytänteenä viittomakielen tulkkauksessa. Tutkimuskysymyksinä esitettiin, mitä semioottisia resursseja viittomakielen tulkit käyttivät englantia sisältävissä ketjutussekvensseissä sekä mitä funktioita em. sekvensseillä oli. Tutkimuksessa tuotettiin yksityiskohtaista kuvausta autenttisesta aineistosta.
2019
Kuvaimia ja kriteereitä voidaan soveltaa eri käyttötarkoituksiin, kuten kielen opetukseen, kielitaidon a…
