This chapter discusses ellipsis in Finnish Sign Language (FinSL). First, in order to provide a necessary background for the discussion, an overview is given of both the basic grammar of FinSL (Section 2) and the larger role ellipsis plays in FinSL (Section 3). Suomalaisen viittomakielen pro gradu –työssäni tarkastelen kuuron oppilaan viittomakielistä opetusta vuorovaikutuksen näkökulmasta. Tutkimusaineisto koostuu kahdesta matematiikan yksilöopetustunnista. This article discusses the prerequisites for the machine translation of sign languages. The topic is complex, including questions relating to technology, interaction design, linguistics and culture. At the moment, despite the affordances provided by the technology, automated translation between signed and spoken languages – or between sign languages – is not possible. This thesis explores Sign Language Peoples’ aspirations for the legal recognition of sign languages, with specific focus on Finland and Scotland. It highlights the timely need to strengthen (in practice) and scrutinize (academically) the legal measures that have been achieved as well as their implementation – and to measure all this against the challenges of endangerment and sustaining vitality. [ENG] This article offers an overview of research in sign language acquisition by children, mostly in American Sign Language. The results indicate that the developmental milestones and the linguistic errors made by children acquiring a sign language coincide with those observed in hearing children acquiring spoken languages. The visual-gestural modality is shown not to have the expected impact on the acquisition processes, which is arguably regulated by strictly linguistic principles.

The effect of sensory experience on hemispheric specialisation for language production is not well understood. Children born deaf, including those who have cochlear implants, have drastically different perceptual experiences of language than their hearing peers. Using functional transcranial Doppler sonography (fTCD), we measured lateralisation during language production in a heterogeneous group of 19 deaf children and in 19 hearing children, matched on language ability.
