Evaluation of the most recent reprocessed SMOS soil moisture products: Comparison between SMOS level 3 V246 and V272
2015
International audience; Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) satellite has been providing surface soil moisture (SSM) and ocean salinity (OS) retrievals at L-band for five years (2010–2014). During these five years, the SSM retrieval algorithm i.e. the L-MEB (L-Band Microwave Emission of the Biosphere [1] model has been progressively improved and hence results in different versions of the SMOS SSM products. This study aims at evaluating the last improvement in the SSM products of the most recent SMOS level 3 (SMOSL3) reprocessing (SMOSL3_2.72) vs. an earlier version (SMOSL3_246). Correlation, bias, Root Mean Square Difference (RMSD) and unbiased RMSD (unbRMSD) were used as perform…
Reliable Detection and Smart Deletion of Malassez Counting Chamber Grid in Microscopic White Light Images for Microbiological Applications
2015
AbstractIn biology, hemocytometers such as Malassez slides are widely used and are effective tools for counting cells manually. In a previous work, a robust algorithm was developed for grid extraction in Malassez slide images. This algorithm was evaluated on a set of 135 images and grids were accurately detected in most cases, but there remained failures for the most difficult images. In this work, we present an optimization of this algorithm that allows for 100% grid detection and a 25% improvement in grid positioning accuracy. These improvements make the algorithm fully reliable for grid detection. This optimization also allows complete erasing of the grid without altering the cells, whic…
An Embedded Solution for Multispectral Palmprint Recognition
2018
Palmprint based identification has attracted much attention in the past decades. In some real-life applications, portable personal authentication systems with high accuracy and speed efficiency are required. This paper presents an embedded palmprint recognition solution based on the multispectral image modality. We first develop an effective recognition algorithm by using partial least squares regression, then a FPGA prototype is implemented and optimized through high-level synthesis technique. The evaluation experiments demonstrate that the proposed system can achieve a higher recognition rate at a lower running cost comparing to the reference implementations.
Ralistic visual immersion : Proposal of an evaluation model
2018
The thesis "Hyper-realistic and multi-sensorial 3D visual immersion" was carried out within the framework of a CIFRE contract established between Arts et Métiers on the one hand and Renault SAS on the other. It proposes a score model to objectively evaluate the ability of an immersive display system to reproduce the right level of sensory stimulation for a user, compared to what he would receive in reality and to the modeling of the human visual system.First, we were interested in laying the foundations of the model: it is composed of twelve criteria, equitably divided into a sum of vision indices and immersion indices. Each criterion is given, as far as possible, a score from 0 to 100. A s…
Weed detection by aerial imagery : toward weed management by UAV
2016
The agricultural framework aims to reduce pesticide use on fields. Weed management, which is highly herbicide consuming, became a great issue. In order to develop a weed management service using UAV, this PhD dissertation studies how to adapt the acquisition system (UAV + multispectral camera) developed by AIRINOV to detect weeds in row crops. The acquisition chain was modeled to assess some of its parameters (optical filters and spatial resolution) impact on weed detection quality. Orthoimages and orthorectified images were created using a multispectral camera (4 to 8 filters) with 6 mm to 6 cm spatial resolutions. Several weed location methods were specifically developed to study multispe…
Motion Analysis for Dynamic 3D Scene Reconstruction and Understanding
2017
This thesis studies the problem of dynamic scene 3D reconstruction and understanding using a calibrated 2D-3D camera setup mounted on a mobile platform via the analysis of objects' motions. For static scenes, the sought 3D map reconstruction can be obtained by registering the point cloud sequence. However, with dynamic scenes, we require a prior step of moving object elimination, which yields to the motion detection and segmentation problems. We provide solutions for the two practical scenarios, namely the known and unknown camera motion cases, respectively. When camera motion is unknown, our 3D-SSC and 3D-SMR algorithms segment the moving objects by analysing their 3D feature trajectories.…
Hardware Implementation of a Configurable Motion Estimator for Adjusting the Video Coding Performances
2012
International audience; Despite the diversity of video compression standard, the motion estimation still remains a key process which is used in most of them. Moreover, the required coding performances (bit-rate, PSNR, image spatial resolution, etc.) depend obviously of the application, the environment and the network communication. The motion estimation can therefore be adapted to fit with these performances. Meanwhile, the real time encoding is required in many applications. In order to reach this goal, we propose in this paper a hardware implementation of the motion estimator which enables the integer motion search algorithms to be modified and the fractional search and variable block siz…
Study of fibrosis induced by an implanted medical device
2014
National audience; This paper focuses on the study of fibrosis induced by an implanted medical device and explores the possibility of characterizing this process by in situ measurement of electrical impedance. The approach combines electrical and biological characterizations of fibrotic tissue, applied to electrodes implanted in animal models. A comparative study of electrical and biological parameters collected at the same time will enable the identification of an electrical marker of fibrosis development, which can be used for establishing a monitoring method. Adopting an interdisciplinary approach, intermediate embedded prototypes, autonomous and portable by animals, will be developed to…
Depth Attention for Scene Understanding
2022
Deep learning models can nowadays teach a machine to realize a number of tasks, even with better precision than human beings. Among all the modules of an intelligent machine, perception is the most essential part without which all other action modules have difficulties in safely and precisely realizing the target task under complex scenes. Conventional perception systems are based on RGB images which provide rich texture information about the 3D scene. However, the quality of RGB images highly depends on environmental factors, which further influence the performance of deep learning models. Therefore, in this thesis, we aim to improve the performance and robustness of RGB models with comple…
