Base-isolated structure equipped with tuned liquid column damper: An experimental study

2019

Abstract In this study, a novel passive vibration control strategy is investigated experimentally, where a Tuned Liquid Column Damper protects a base-isolated structure. The Tuned Liquid Column Damper is attached to the base, in contrast to typical attachment points of passive energy dissipation devices in high-rise buildings at elevated levels. Experiments on a base-excited small-scale three-story shear frame are conducted in order to study effects of both control devices – base-isolation and Tuned Liquid Column Damper – on the structural model. The dynamic properties of the stand-alone shear frame and the base-isolation subsystem are derived using standard dynamic test methods based on di…

Optimal design of tuned liquid column damper inerter for vibration control

2022

Abstract In this paper, the use of a novel passive control device defined as Tuned Liquid Column Damper Inerter (TLCDI) is studied to control the seismic response of structural systems. The TLCDI, recently introduced as an enhanced version of the conventional Tuned Liquid Column Damper, may achieve improved seismic performances by exploiting the mass amplification effect of the so-called inerter device. For this purpose, an optimization procedure for the design of the TLCDI based on a statistical linearization technique and the minimization of the structural displacement variance is proposed. Notably, by assuming a white noise base excitation and considering some additional approximations, …

An original multi-objective criterion for the design of small-scale polygeneration systems based on realistic operating conditions

2008

The optimal design and operation of cogeneration and trigeneration systems for buildings applications is a complex issue, which has been investigated by several different approaches. Both the two basic management strategies, namely heat-tracking and electricity-tracking, have advantages and drawbacks in terms of operating results and may lead the plant designer either to undersize or oversize the CHP unit with respect to the optimal lay-out. Experimental works have demonstrated how the actual on-site performance of small-scale polygeneration systems significantly differs from their expected operation, due to the need for a regular plant operation and the effects of outages for scheduled or …

Joint Power Allocation and Link Selection for Multi-Carrier Buffer Aided Relay Network

2019

In this paper, we present a joint power allocation and adaptive link selection protocol for an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)-based network consists of one source node i.e., base station (BS), one destination node i.e., (MU) and a buffer aided decode and forward (DF) relay node. Our objective is to maximize the average throughput of the system via power loading over different subcarriers at source and relay nodes. A separate power budget is assumed at each transmitting node to make the system more practical. In order to form our solution more tractable, a decomposition framework is implemented to solve the mixed integer optimization problem. Further, less complex suboptim…

Energy Efficient Sink Placement in Wireless Sensor Networks by Brain Storm Optimization Algorithm

2018

Wireless sensor networks represent one of the most promising technologies whose use has significantly increased in the past years. They are used in various applications such as health care monitoring, surveillance and monitoring in agriculture, industrial monitoring, habitat and underwater monitoring, etc. Deployment of the wireless sensor networks introduces number of hard optimization problems. Placement of the elements such as sensors, gateways, sinks and base stations, depend on different conditions and constraints such as signal propagation, distance, energy preservation, reliability. In this paper, we propose a method based on brain storm optimization algorithm for placing multiple si…

Multicriteria-Oriented Optimization of Building Energy Performances: The Annex 72 IEA-EBC Experience

2021

International audience; This chapter describes the research experience of the International Energy Agency-Energy in Buildings and Communities Programme Annex 72 members on the application of multi-objective optimization processes for the selection of design or retrofit actions that allow for improving different aspects (energy, environmental, economic, etc.) of buildings in a life cycle perspective. Thirteen case studies were examined focussing on methodologies, applications and results and deriving generic conclusions and guidelines for building designers and decision-makers.

A robust evolutionary algorithm for the recovery of rational Gielis curves

2013

International audience; Gielis curves (GC) can represent a wide range of shapes and patterns ranging from star shapes to symmetric and asymmetric polygons, and even self intersecting curves. Such patterns appear in natural objects or phenomena, such as flowers, crystals, pollen structures, animals, or even wave propagation. Gielis curves and surfaces are an extension of Lamé curves and surfaces (superquadrics) which have benefited in the last two decades of extensive researches to retrieve their parameters from various data types, such as range images, 2D and 3D point clouds, etc. Unfortunately, the most efficient techniques for superquadrics recovery, based on deterministic methods, cannot…

Optimal design of an electro-hydraulic valve for heavy-duty vehicle clutch actuator with certain constraints

2016

Abstract The main objective of this paper is to investigate the sensitivity analysis and optimal design of a proportional solenoid valve (PSV) operated pressure reducing valve (PRV) for heavy-duty automatic transmission clutch actuators. The nonlinear electro-hydraulic valve model is developed based on fluid dynamics. In order to implement the sensitivity analysis and optimization for the PRV, the PSV model is validated by comparing the results with data obtained from a real test-bench. The sensitivity of the PSV pressure response with regard to the structural parameters is investigated by using Sobol׳s method. Finally, simulations and experimental investigations are performed on the optimi…
