Application of adaptive models for the determination of the thermal behaviour of a photovoltaic panel

2013

The use of reliable forecasting models for the PV temperature is necessary for a more correct evaluation of energy and economic performances. Climatic conditions certainly have a remarkable influence on thermo-electric behaviour of the PV panel but the physical system is too complex for an analytical representation. A neural-network-based approach for solar panel temperature modelling is here presented. The models were trained using a set of data collected from a test facility. Simulation results of the trained neural networks are presented and compared with those obtained with an empirical correlation.

Modeling musical attributes to characterize ensemble recordings using rhythmic audio features

2011

In this paper, we present the results of a pre-study on music performance analysis of ensemble music. Our aim is to implement a music classification system for the description of live recordings, for instance to help musicologist and musicians to analyze improvised ensemble performances. The main problem we deal with is the extraction of a suitable set of audio features from the recorded instrument tracks. Our approach is to extract rhythm-related audio features and to apply them for regression-based modeling of eight more general musical attributes. The model based on Partial Least-Squares Regression without preceding Principal Component Analysis performed best for all of the eight attribu…

Role of the colored noise in a FitzHugh-Nagumo system driven by a periodic signal

2007

During these last years the interest in neuronal dynamics increased. The study of this kind of system has been carried out by using the FitzHugh-Nagumo (FHN) model that is a simplified modification of the Hodgkin-Huxley model. Many interesting phenomena can be observed in the presence of fluctuations: modification of detection threshold by manipulation of noisy parameters (FHN model), noise-induced activation and coeherence resonance for suitable noise amplitude (absence of periodic signal), resonant activation for high periodic signals and noise reduction, intrinsic stochastic resonance (ISR) in Hodgkin-Huxley neuron and the enhancement of a weak signal by tuning the subthreshold intrinsic…

A memetic approach to discrete tomography from noisy projections

2010

Discrete tomography deals with the reconstruction of images from very few projections, which is, in the general case, an NP-hard problem. This paper describes a new memetic reconstruction algorithm. It generates a set of initial images by network flows, related to two of the input projections, and lets them evolve towards a possible solution, by using crossover and mutation. Switch and compactness operators improve the quality of the reconstructed images during each generation, while the selection of the best images addresses the evolution to an optimal result. One of the most important issues in discrete tomography is known as the stability problem and it is tackled here, in the case of no…

Embryo of a Quantum Vocal Theory of Sound

2019

Concepts and formalism from acoustics are often used to exemplify quantum mechanics. Conversely, quantum mechanics could be used to achieve a new perspective on acoustics, as shown by Gabor studies. Here, we focus in particular on the study of human voice, considered as a probe to investigate the world of sounds. We present a theoretical framework that is based on observables of vocal production, and on some measurement apparati that can be used both for analysis and synthesis. In analogy to the description of spin states of a particle, the quantum-mechanical formalism is used to describe the relations between the fundamental states associated with phonetic labels such as phonation, turbule…

Energy Saving Optimizing the Ventilation Control in a Big Shopping Center

2018

The paper investigates the potential energy savings in the context of big shopping centers, thanks to the introduction of innovative technologies able to control the ventilation according the real requirement for comfort and health of indoor spaces. The case study analyses a big shopping center, where the ventilation is realized with a centralized air-conditioning plant, working with fixed air flows. Two solutions are proposed to reduce the energy consumption for ventilation. The first considers the installation of heat recovery exchangers, the second the introduction of a control system able to modulate the air exchange, according to the real requirements. An energetic and economic evaluat…

The impact of the software’s choice on dynamic daylight simulations’ results: A comparison between Daysim and 3ds Max Design®

2015

Abstract Evaluating indoor daylight availability is extremely important in order to define the characteristics of an environment in terms of visual comfort and energy performances of lighting systems. The criticism of the static calculation approach based on Daylight Factor led to the development of the Climate Based Daylight Modeling (CBDM) one. Dynamic simulations are performed thanks to the use of specific software and the choice of a calculation tool or another could provide different output results. Therefore the aim of this paper is to compare results of dynamic daylight simulations carried out with two different software, Daysim and 3ds Max Design® and referred to a simple office loc…

Urban Energy Hubs Economic Optimization and Environmental Comparison in Italy and Vietnam

2018

This paper aims to perform the minimization of the yearly energy supply cost from the main electricity and natural gas grids related to an energy district, considering the installation of different equipments. The case study refers to energy consumption of a medium density urban district and involves the exploitation of different energy sources and devices (photovoltaic systems, electrical energy storage, heat pumps and cogenerators). The analysis of the district energy supply is accomplished through an energy hub model. After a cost analysis related to the considered energy systems, a MILP algorithm was used for the optimization of a cost function and the simulation of various scenarios. M…

A Survey on LoRa for Smart Agriculture: Current Trends and Future Perspectives

2023

This paper provides a survey on the adoption of LoRa in the agricultural field, and reviews state-of-the-art solutions for Smart Agriculture, analyzing the potential of this technology in different infield applications. In particular, we consider four reference scenarios, namely irrigation systems, plantation and crop monitoring, tree monitoring, and livestock monitoring, which exhibit heterogeneous requirements in terms of network bandwidth, density, sensors’ complexity, and energy demand, as well as latency in the decision process. We discuss how LoRa-based solutions can work in these scenarios, analyzing their scalability, interoperability, network architecture, and energy-efficiency. Fi…

Coexistence between IEEE802.15.4 and IEEE802.11 through cross-technology signaling

2017

When different technologies use the same frequency bands in close proximity, the resulting interference typically results in performance degradation. Coexistence methods exist, but these are often technology specific and requiring technology specific interference detection methods. To remove the root cause of the performance degradation, devices should be able to negotiate medium access even when using different technologies. To this end, this paper proposes an architecture that allows crosstechnology medium access by means of a Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) scheme. In order to achieve cross-technology synchronization, which is required for the TDMA solution, an energy pattern beacon…
