Correlation between CD117+ myeloma plasma cells and hematopoietic progenitor cells in different categories of patients

2015

Background Multiple myeloma (MM) is a neoplastic disorder of plasma cells interesting mainly the elderly. MM remains an incurable disease, mostly because of the strong interplay between clonal plasma cells (cPCs) and bone marrow (BM) microenvironment. Multiparameter flow cytometry (MFC) allows the simultaneous study of the cPC immunophenotype and alterations involving other cells in BM, but rarely these data are interpreted as connected. One exception to this habit are previous studies about relationship between CD117 cPC positivity and hematopoietic progenitor cell (HPC) distribution in newly diagnosed patients. Thus we were interested in verifying the distribution of BM CD34+ HPCs in heal…

Ductal Carcinoma In Situ of the Breast: A Comparative Analysis of Histology, Nuclear Area, Ploidy, and Neovascularization Provides Differentiation Be…

2002

Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) is a heterogeneous group of lesions that has been subdivided into three types: well differentiated (grade I), moderately differentiated (grade II), and poorly differentiated (grade III). Forty-five cases of DCIS were analyzed for image analysis: nuclear area, DNA ploidy, and vascularization in order to establish a more precise correlation between the histologic grade and these morphometric parameters. Our results confirm that the mean nuclear area, DNA ploidy, and microvessel density (MVD) progressively increased from DCIS grade I to DCIS grade III. The analysis of the nuclear area in relationship to DCIS grading demonstrated a progressive increase of values …

Pathogenesis and clinicohistopathological caractheristics of melanoacanthoma: A systematic review.

2015

Introduction: The melanoacanthoma is a rare benign pigmented tumor, characterized by a fast radial growth and clinical behavior similar to melanoma. Color changes in oral mucosa and dermis are consequence of increased melanocyte activity as response to an irritant factor. There is a vast phenotypic variety. It is difficult to distinguish between a benign pigmented lesion and a melanoma at its early stage. Due to its clinical relevance is crucial to diagnose possible malignancy of the lesions. Objectives: The aim of this article is to conduct a systematic review of all published articles, as well as update and evaluate etiologic factors and clinicopathological features. Material and Methods:…

Relationship between Bone Marrow PD-1 and PD-L1 Expression and the Presence of Osteolytic Bone Disease in Multiple Myeloma Patients

2018

Abstract Alterations of the bone marrow (BM) immune-microenvironment characterize the progression of monoclonal gammopathies and the development of osteolytic bone disease in multiple myeloma (MM). MM patients exhibit immune dysfunctions as impaired dendritic, NK and T cells, whereas the onset of MM osteolytic lesions is associated to an increased prevalence of Th17 cells. Recently, the pathophysiological role of the programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1)/PD-1 ligand (PD-L1) pathway together with an increase of myeloid derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) in the induction of tumor tolerance and immune evasion has been underlined with a therapeutic relevance. However, unclear data on the express…

GLANDULAR ODONTOGENIC CYST ASSOCIATED WITH AMELOBLASTOMA: CASE REPORT AND REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE

2017

Glandular odontogenic cyst (GOC) associated with ameloblastoma is an exceedingly rare histologic presentation with no known clinical significance or treatment applications. Four cases have been reported, three in the mandible and one in the maxilla. The age range is 14-65 and with male predilection. All four presented with swellings and two with pain. We add one more case to the literature of a 58-year old male presenting with an expansile multilocular radiolucency between teeth #19-23. The ameloblastomatous changes in this case are consistent with those of a unicystic ameloblastoma-mural subtype. Although the histologic changes are those of a unicystic ameloblastoma, the clinical and radio…

FRI0696 Patient activation and adherence to biological therapy: preliminary results

2018

Background: Medication non-adherence is associated with treatment failure. Some authors show a positive relationship between patient activation and both, adherence to treatment for chronic conditions and improved outcomes. Objectives: To present preliminary results of a study measuring adherence to biological therapy and its relationship with the Patient Activation Measure (PAM) in the outpatient setting. Methods: Ambispective longitudinal observational descriptive study in a general tertiary university hospital. Patients on treatment with the same biological drug for ≥6 months were included in order of arrival. Patients with some degree of mental disability, which prevented understanding o…

Oral granular cell tumor: a study of twelve cases in a Brazilian population

2010

Objectives: Analyze clinic and epidemiological aspects of all Oral Granular cell tumor (GCT) during a 5-year period in a Brazilian population. Study design: clinical and treatment outcome data of patients with oral GCT seen at the Division of Stomatology, School of Dentistry, Federal University of Ceara, Brazil, between January 2001 and December 2005 were reviewed. Results: during the analyzed period, 6231 oral lesions were collected from files of different anatomo-pathology laboratories situated in the state of Ceara, Brazil. Of all cases, only 12 of GCT were diagnosed. The lesion was more common in female patients, with a mean age of 40.8 years, occurring mainly in tongue. Conclusion: Ora…

Comparison of the effect of pharmacotherapy and neuro-feedback therapy on oral health of children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder

2018

Background Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a chronic and progressive mental disorder related to the childhood period. This study aims to compare the oral health of two groups of ADHD children: those under pharmacotherapy and those under neuro-feedback therapy. Material and methods 72 ADHD children (aged 6-12) were divided into two 36 member groups: The pharmacotherapy group and the neuro-feedback therapy group. Unstimulated salivary flow (USF), DMFT, and plaque index were assessed in these children. Statistical analysis was carried out on the data with the independent t-test, which was performed using SPSS 16. The significance level of the study was p Results In this stud…

Are near visual signs and symptoms in multiple sclerosis compatible with convergence insufficiency?

2021

Clinical relevance: Optometric management of neurodegenerative diseases is essential since visual signs, such as double vision, visual acuity reduction, or oculomotricity dysfunctions, are usually present in these subjects over the course of the disease. The present paper can guide clinicians in better managing their patients with multiple sclerosis. Background: Patients with multiple sclerosis present near vision symptoms that may be related to binocular anomalies, but these symptoms have not been investigated and related to specific signs. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the binocular vision in subjects with multiple sclerosis, and to analyse if the near visual signs and symp…

Perceived barriers to the provision of preventive care among dentists of Udaipur, India

2015

Aim: To investigate the practice-, patient- and dentist related barriers to the provision of preventive dental care as perceived by dentists of Udaipur city, Rajasthan, India. Settings and Design:- A cross sectional descriptive survey was conducted among 120 dentists of Udaipur city, Rajasthan. Material and Methods: Mean Content Validity Ratio (CVR) was calculated as 0.87 based on the opinions expressed by a panel of total six academicians. Cronbach's coefficient was found to be 0.88, which showed a high internal reliability of the questionnaire. The questionnaire consisted of demographic questions and 12 specific research questions. Statistical analysis used:- Student's t-test and ANOVA te…
