The Karsikko and Cross-Tree Tradition of Finland The Origins, Change and End of the Custom

According to an East -Finnish custom that came to an end around the beginning of the 20th century, the karsikko (conifer shorn of branches) and the cross-tree were prepared when the deceased was taken for burial. The Roman-Catholic Church and the Reformation introduced into folk beliefs the idea that the deceased did not journey all the way to the community of the dead. Restoring the social order of the community that had been disturbed by death then required that the dead be placed in the intermediary stage dictated by the tripartite division of the rite of passage in status. Abstract Forest-based businesses are the center of the transition to the sustainable and competitive circular bioeconomy in Finland. This study explores the transition of Finnish FBS firms to new business models, with a focus on the organizational resources and capabilities needed for transition. It also identifies the important elements in the business environment and the role of innovations in this process. The study uses thematic interviews with managers from various FBS firms and companies from interfacing sectors, all of which have operations in Finland. This longitudinal study investigated the role of parents and peers as well as of education-related goal motivation during educational transitioning in late adolescence. The sample consisted of 1520 upper secondary education students attending either academic or vocational upper secondary school in Finland. They were surveyed three times: (1) in the first year of their upper secondary education, (2) in the second year of their upper secondary education, and (3) two years later. Two streams of literature have become especially prominent in understanding social change toward sustainability within the past decades: the research on socio-technical transitions and applications of social practice theory. The aim of this article is to contribute to efforts to create dialogue between these two approaches. Transitioning from adolescence to adulthood for young people living with cerebral palsy : a meta-ethnography

Transitioning from adolescence to adulthood appears to be a challenging period for young people living with cerebral palsy. The aim of this review was to highlight the challenges that might be experienced during this period. A systematic search of the literature and meta-ethnographic review examined seven qualitative research papers providing a detailed synthesis in the form of three domains summarised as ‘meaningful preparation for transition’, ‘becoming empowered’, and, ‘overcoming vulnerability’. Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli selvittää, millaisia koulusiirtymiin liittyviä huolia esiopetusikäisillä ja kuudesluokkalaisilla lapsilla on siirtymissä esiopetuksesta alakouluun ja alakoulusta yläkouluun. Nuorten syrjäytymisestä on viime vuosina oltu huolissaan. Pahimmillaan siirtymä alakoulusta yläkouluun toimii syrjäytymiseen johtavana kuiluna koulutuspolulla. Herkkään siirtymäaikaan liittyvät riskitekijät olisi tärkeää tunnistaa ennaltaehkäisyn tueksi. Tämän pro gradu –tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli tarkastella oppilaiden siirtymäkokemusten kehitystä alakoulusta yläkouluun. Changes in achievement values from primary to lower secondary school among students with and without externalizing problems

This study examined the effect of students' externalizing problems on changes in values that they attach to math across the transition from primary to lower secondary school. Data pertaining to externalizing problems and to intrinsic, attainment, and utility values in math were gathered using the self-ratings of students in Grades 6 and 7. The analysis involved a comparison between students who reported persistent high externalizing problems before and after the transition (n = 63; 59% boys) and those who had low or non-existent externalizing problems before and after the transition (n = 1352; 50% boys).
