Salt concentration and particle density dependence of electrophoretic mobilities of spherical colloids in aqueous suspension.

Using laser Doppler velocimetry in the superheterodyne mode, we conducted a systematic study of the electrophoretic mobility of dispersions of small silica spheres (a=18 nm) suspended in water at different salinities and particle concentrations. The concentration of NaCl was varied from 40 microM up to 16 mM, while the particle concentrations were varied between 4.2x10(18) and 2.1x10(20) m-3. We find a decrease of mobility with increasing salt concentrations and an increase with increased particle number densities. Peptide mapping by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography employing silica rod monoliths.

In this paper, a general procedure is described for the generation of peptide maps of proteins with monolithic silica-based columns. The peptide fragments were obtained by tryptic digestion of various cytochrome c species with purification of the tryptic fragments achieved by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatographic methods. Peak assignment of the various peptides was based on evaluation of the biophysical properties of the individual peptides and via mass spectrometric identification. Isolation of a stable, acyclic, two-coordinate silylene.

The synthesis and characterization of a stable, acyclic two-coordinate silylene, Si(SAr(Me(6)))(2) [Ar(Me(6)) = C(6)H(3)-2,6(C(6)H(2)-2,4,6-Me(3))(2)], by reduction of Br(2)Si(SAr(Me(6)))(2) with a magnesium(I) reductant is described. It features a V-shaped silicon coordination with a S-Si-S angle of 90.52(2)° and an average Si-S distance of 2.158(3) A. Although it reacts readily with an alkyl halide, it does not react with hydrogen under ambient conditions, probably as a result of the ca. 4.3 eV energy difference between the frontier silicon lone pair and 3p orbitals.

Hybrid silicon on insulator/polymer electro-optical intensity modulator operating at 780  nm

Currently inorganic materials prevail as the nonlinear active medium for light modulation in electro-optical (EO) device technology. A recent promising trend is to consider organic nonlinear optical materials for application in EO modulators due to their multiple advantages including low costs and high EO coefficients. In this paper, we proposed a new type of polymer EO modulator whose fabrication is compatible with the currently used silicon on insulator technology. Covalently attached polymer mono- and multilayers on silanized glass substrates

Abstract Applying grazing incidence FTIR and ellipsometry, the reaction of poly [(1-methyl-vinyl isocyanate)-alt-(maleic anhydride)](IAP) with amino-silanized glass and silicon oxide surfaces has been investigated. A reactive surface containing isocyanate and anhydride groups was formed after the adsorption of the polymer. The layer could be further functionalized using 2-aminoethanol. Multilayers could be built up by adsorbing a second layer of IAP onto an already reacted first layer of IAP.

Design, Synthesis, and Use of Y-Shaped ATRP/NMP Surface Tethered Initiator.

Heterogeneous polymer brushes on surfaces can be easily formed from a binary initiator on a silicon oxide substrate where two different types of polymers can be grown side-by-side. Herein, we designed a new Y-shaped binary initiator using straightforward chemistry for “grafting from” polymer brushes. This initiator synthesis takes advantage of the Passerini reaction, a multicomponent reaction combining two initiator sites and one surface linking site. Polysiloxane-backbone block copolymers in a one-pot synthesis: a silicone platform for facile functionalization.

Block copolymers consisting exclusively of a silicon-oxygen backbone are synthesized by sequential anionic ring-opening polymerization of different cyclic siloxane monomers. After formation of a poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) block by butyllithium-initiated polymerization of D3, a functional second block is generated by subsequent addition of tetramethyl tetravinyl cyclotetrasiloxane (D4(V) ), resulting in diblock copolymers comprised a simple PDMS block and a functional poly(methylvinylsiloxane) (PMVS) block. Designing Medical Devices Based on Silicon Polymeric Material with Controlled Release of Local Anesthetics

The drug delivery systems that are the object of this article take the form of a polymer matrix made of silicone containing a drug. These devices can be used as patches for local dermal applications releasing the drug in a controlled manner. The model active agent, lidocaine hydrochloride was chosen from the range of local anesthetics. When the drug is restricted to the surface, it is released more rapidly than when it is allowed to spread evenly throughout the silicon structure. Handling the insoluble POM: the preparation of nanoparticles based on hyperbranched-linear-hyperbranched ABA triblock copolymers with variable hydrophilicity and composed of short hyperbranched polyglycerol (hbPG) as the A-blocks and linear poly(oxymethylene) (POM) as a B-block is described.
