Successful Endoscopic Resection of an Esophageal Metastasis from a Preceding Squamous-Cell Tonsillar Carcinoma
2005
This report describes the case of a 62-year-old man with tonsillar carcinoma who had undergone esophagectomy due to an esophageal metastasis. Subsequently, a second metastasis occurred in the residual esophagus, and he presented for evaluation for local endoscopic therapy. The initial upper endoscopy revealed a type IIa - c lesion at 21 cm from the incisors, within a segment suspicious for Barrett's mucosa. As part of the complex treatment approach in this patient, endoscopic resection of the lesion was carried out using the suck-and-cut technique with ligation. Histology showed that the lesion was a metastasis from a squamous-cell carcinoma, with focal infiltration of the upper submucosal …

Transillumination imaging through biological tissue by single-pixel detection
2015
One challenge that has long held the attention of scientists is that of clearly seeing objects hidden by turbid media, as smoke, fog or biological tissue, which has major implications in fields such as remote sensing or early diagnosis of diseases. Here, we combine structured incoherent illumination and bucket detection for imaging an absorbing object completely embedded in a scattering medium. A sequence of low-intensity microstructured light patterns is launched onto the object, whose image is accurately reconstructed through the light fluctuations measured by a single-pixel detector. Our technique is noninvasive, does not require coherent sources, raster scanning nor time-gated detection…
Clockwise, low- metamorphism of the Aus granulite terrain, southern Namibia, during the Mesoproterozoic Namaqua Orogeny
2013
Abstract The Aus granulite terrain forms part of the Mesoproterozoic Namaqua Metamorphic Complex (NMC) of southern Africa. The terrain consists of pre- to syn-tectonic granitoid gneisses containing subordinate aluminous metasediments, metapsammites, mafic granulite and calc-silicate, all of which have been metamorphosed and migmatised to varying degrees. Pseudosection modelling of garnet–sillimanite–cordierite–biotite aluminous metapelitic samples constrain peak metamorphic conditions at 5.5 kbar and 825 ° C. Pseudomorphs of sillimanite after andalusite constrain early prograde conditions of ∼ 550–600 ° C at below 4 kbar, whereas the replacement of sillimanite by garnet–cordierite and sub…

Diagnostic Validity of Digital Imaging Fiber-Optic Transillumination (DIFOTI) and Near-Infrared Light Transillumination (NILT) for Caries in Dentine.
2020
The objective of the study is to analyse the available evidence for the validity of the transillumination method in the diagnosis of interproximal caries. Bibliographic searches were carried out in three data bases (PubMed, Embase, Scopus) with the key words “Transillumination AND caries”. A total of 11 studies were selected for the qualitative analysis and meta-analysis. In the qualitative analysis, both in vivo and in vitro studies were included. The gold standards were tomography, digital radiography, and clinical visual diagnosis. The meta-analysis determined the sensitivity, specificity, and area below the ROC curve relative to the transillumination method in the diagnosis …
