Carboranyl Substituted Siloxanes and Octasilsesquioxanes: Synthesis, Characterization, and Reactivity
2008
Carboranyl-containing disiloxane, cyclic-siloxane and cage-like silsesquioxane have been prepared in high yields. Two routes are compared for their preparation, a classical hydrolytic process based on hydrolysis and condensation of the freshly prepared carboranylalkylchlorosilane and ethoxysilane precursors and a nonhydrolytic route based on the specific reactivity of chorosilane toward DMSO. Based on the typical reactivity of the carboranyl group toward nucleophiles, dianionic disiloxanes and octaanionic silsesquioxanes were obtained without modification of the siloxane bond. Products are fully characterized by FTIR, NMR and MALDI-TOF methods.
Preparative fractionation and characterization of polycarbonate/eugenol-siloxane copolymers
2002
Bisphenol-A polycarbonate/eugenol-siloxane copolymers were fractionated at the preparative scale by the continuous polymer fractionation (CPF) technique. It is the first example of copolymer fractionation by CPF. The distribution of siloxane species across the fractions was assessed for copolymers differing in initial siloxane concentration and block length. On- and off-line combinations of size exclusion chromatography and infrared spectroscopy were used to analyze chemical composition (CC) of the unfractionated samples across the molecular weight distribution enabling comparison with the fractions. A polycarbonate-siloxane copolymer containing 10 wt% of very short siloxane blocks (dp = 2)…
Recovery of dissolved methane through a flat sheet module with PDMS, PP, and PVDF membranes
2022
Abstract A degassing contactor using a flat sheet membrane module (FM) was operated in sweep gas mode to study the performance of several commercial polymer membranes, both dense (polydimethylsiloxane, PDMS) and microporous (polypropylene, PP, and polyvinylidenefluoride, PVDF), for the recovery of dissolved methane from water. Non-steady state experiments were conducted at different liquid (QL, 3.5–40.5 L h-1) and gas flow rates (QN2, 0.05–15.00 L h-1). In the case of PDMS, PP, and when PVDF was operated at moderate high QL (≥ 21 L h-1), similar methane removal efficiencies (RE) were obtained. In the case of PVDF operated at relatively low QL (3.5 L h-1), a lower RE was observed. A model fo…
Functionalized siloxane‐silsesquioxane resins and polypropylene‐based composites: Morphological, structural, thermal, and mechanical properties
2018
Non‐functionalized and n‐alkyl‐functionalized siloxane‐silsesquioxane resins (S4SQ) were synthesized and characterized to confirm their structure and properties. Polypropylene (PP) composites with S4SQ resins as fillers were prepared by the melt blending. The influence of the kinds and amounts of fillers on the structural, morphological and thermal properties as well as mechanical characteristics and processability was determined. High compatibility of composites with functionalized resins resulted in more homogenous dispersion of filler particles in comparison with the composites which contained a non‐functionalized resin. Moreover, the introduction of S4SQ resins into PP strongly affected…
Diversity of freshwater Epsilonproteobacteria and dark inorganic carbon fixation in the sulphidic redoxcline of a meromictic karstic lake.
2015
Sulfidic redoxclines are a suitable niche for the growth and activity of different chemo- and photolithotrophic sulphide-oxidizing microbial groups such as the Epsilonproteobacteria and the green sulfur bacteria (GSB). We have investigated the diversity, abundance and contribution to inorganic carbon uptake of Epsilonproteobacteria in a meromictic basin of Lake Banyoles. CARD-FISH counts revealed that Epsilonproteobacteria were prevalent at the redoxcline in winter (maximum abundance of 2 × 10(6) cells mL(-1), ≈60% of total cells) but they were nearly absent in summer, when GSB bloomed. This seasonal trend was supported by 16S rRNA gene pyrotag datasets, which revealed that the epsilonprote…
CANDIDA SEPTIC THROMBOSIS OF THE LEFT ATRIUM IN TWINS: REPORT OF TWO CASES
2009
Background: Preterms are often exposed to nosocomial infections in NICU. Candida infections are particularly common and can result in progressive organization of intracardiac thrombosis, usually in the right atrium. Design and population: GB (24.4 wg, 460 g, bigeminal pregnancy): he was affected by RDS, PDA, jaundice, anaemia and had been submitted to TPN with CVC, also because of anus imperforate. On the 50th day, haemoculture resulted positive for Candida parapsilosis and, by echocardiography, hyperecogen peduncolate formation in the appendix of left auricola. Despite antifungal therapy, exitus occurred. CM (32.4 wg, 1390 g, bigeminal pregnancy): on 2nd day, she was operated for “apple-pe…

Cell Susceptibility to Baculovirus Transduction and Echovirus Infection Is Modified by Protein Kinase C Phosphorylation and Vimentin Organization
2013
ABSTRACT Some cell types are more susceptible to viral gene transfer or virus infection than others, irrespective of the number of viral receptors or virus binding efficacy on their surfaces. In order to characterize the cell-line-specific features contributing to efficient virus entry, we studied two cell lines (Ea.hy926 and MG-63) that are nearly nonpermissive to insect-specific baculovirus (BV) and the human enterovirus echovirus 1 (EV1) and compared their characteristics with those of a highly permissive (HepG2) cell line. All the cell lines contained high levels of viral receptors on their surfaces, and virus binding was shown to be efficient. However, in nonpermissive cells, BV and it…
The authors addresses the issue of proximity violence suffered by refugees/asylum seekers during their migration path. Furthermore, they reflects on the role assumed by the social worker on the so-called “accompaniment process” towards an awareness path, emancipation and personal empowerment of the victims.
Ba and Ni speciation in a nodule of binary Mn oxide phase composition from Lake Baikal
2007
The partitioning and incorporation mechanism of Ni and Ba in a ferromanganese nodule from Lake Baikal were characterized by X-ray microfluorescence, microdiffraction, and absorption spectroscopy. Fe is speciated as goethite, and Mn as romanechite (psilomelane) and 10 A ˚ -vernadite (turbostratic buserite) with minor 7 A ˚ -vernadite (turbostratic birnessite). Barium is associated with romanechite and Ni with vernadite in distinct and irregularly distributed layers, and each type of Mn oxide is separated from the other type by goethite. The binary Mn oxide banding pattern is interpreted by a two-mode accretionary model, in which the variation in Ba flux induced by hydrothermal water pulses d…
