In Situ Colorimetric Quantification of Silver Cations in the Presence of Silver Nanoparticles

Silver ions (Ag(+)) can be quantified in situ in the presence of AgNPs by using a colorimetric sensing probe (3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine). Interestingly, it also enables detection of the Ag(+) adsorbed on the AgNP surface. This is relevant to design new methods to make AgNPs while ensuring the total reduction of Ag(+).
Elasticity and yield strength of pentagonal silver nanowires: In situ bending tests

This paper reports in situ mechanical characterization of silver nanowires (Ag NWs) inside a scanning electron microscope using a cantilevered beam bending technique. Measurements consisted in controlled bending of a cantilevered NW by the tip of an atomic force microscope glued to the force sensor. Relatively high degree of elasticity followed by either plastic deformation or fracture was observed in bending experiments. Experimental data were numerically fitted into the model based on the elastic beam theory and values of Young modulus and yield strength were extracted. Preparation and evaluation of lauryl methacrylate monoliths with embedded silver nanoparticles for capillary electrochromatography

In this article, capillary columns constituted by lauryl methacrylate monoliths with embedded silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were developed and tested. Two incorporation approaches of AgNPs in monoliths were explored. The AgNPs were either photogenerated in situ during polymerization of the monolith by UV irradiation, or incorporated to the polymerization mixture (ex situ). The influence of the AgNP concentration on the morphological and chromatographic properties of the polymer matrix was investigated, and both the in situ and ex situ approaches were comparatively discussed. In this chapter I describe the synthetic methods for the particles used in this work. Initially bare gold nanorods are synthesized , which are used to investigate continuously the growth of bigger nanoparticles and the protein-membrane interaction on a single particle level . To reduce the single particle linewidth and therefore to increase the sensitivity on changes in the refractive index , these rods are coated with a thin silver shell . Sediments are believed to be a major sink for silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in the aquatic environment, but there is a lack of knowledge about the environmental effects and behavior of AgNPs in sediments. The release of highly toxic Ag+ through dissolution of AgNPs is one mechanism leading to toxic effects in sediments. Functionalization of Silver Nanowires Surface using Ag–C Bonds in a Sequential Reductive Method

Silver nanowires (Ag-NW) assembled in interdigitated webs have shown an applicative potential as transparent and conducting electrodes. However, upon integration in practical device designs, the presence of silver oxide, which instantaneously forms on the Ag-NW surfaces in ambient conditions, is unwanted. Here, we report on the functionalization of Ag-NWs with 4-nitrophenyl moieties through A-C bonds using a versatile two step reduction process, i.e., ascorbate reduction combined electrografting. We show that 40% of the Ag atop sites were terminated and provide high surface stability toward oxidation for more than 2 months while keeping the same intrinsic conductivity as in bulk silver.
Third-order nonlinear optical effects of silver nanoparticles and third harmonic generation from their plasma plumes

Abstract We investigated the third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of the silver (Ag) nanoparticles (NPs) of various sizes, which were produced by disintegration of commercially available 20 and 100 nm NPs in different solvents. It is observed that NPs with the sizes less or greater than 30 nm possess saturable absorption or reverse saturable absorption (or two-photon absorption), respectively. The NPs suspensions show a self-focusing effect. In addition, the third harmonic generation from the plasma plumes produced by nanosecond laser ablation of bulk Ag and Ag NPs of 100 nm and 20 nm sizes is reported.
