The author, after an important discovery at Palermo’s Diocesan Historic Archive, whose he’s vice-director, publishes the Chapters of Palermo’s S…

Through the study of the unpublished information noted in the volumes deposited in the Fund of the Suppressed Religious Corporations of the State Archives of Palermo, it is possible to reconstruct the collection of silverware of the monastery of the Holy Savior of Corleone, now unfortunately largely lost, bringing t…

L'opera, messa a confronto con altri simili manufatti coevi, è stata verosimilmente commissionata da Francesco Bonanno, barone di Prizzi The silver bat of Prizzi, a town in the Sicilian mountains, made between 1723 and 1724, is referred to the silversmith Placido Carini from Palermo. The work, compared with other similar contemporary artefacts, was probably commissioned by Francesco Bonanno, Baron of Prizzi.

Environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) as a new technique to determine the ice nucleation capability of individual atmospheric aerosol par…

2007

Abstract Heterogeneous ice nucleation on synthetic silver iodide, natural kaolinite and montmorillonite particles via condensation, freezing and deposition modes was studied by environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) in the temperature range of 250–270 K. By increasing the H2O pressure in the sample chamber at constant temperature, ice formation can be studied in situ and can be related to the chemical composition of the particles that can be determined simultaneously. For silver iodide and kaolinite, supersaturation values of first ice formation are in good agreement (1–2% absolute) with diffusion chamber experiments. For both substances, threshold temperatures for the condensati…

Iugalia vetustissima.

The role of size and protein shells in the toxicity to algal photosynthesis induced by ionic silver delivered from silver nanoparticles

2019

Abstract Because of their biocide properties, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are present in numerous consumer products. The biocidal properties of AgNPs are due to both the interactions between AgNP and cell membranes and the release of dissolved silver (Ag+). Recent studies emphasized the role of different nanoparticle coatings in complexing and storing Ag+. In this study, the availability of dissolved silver in the presence of algae was assessed for three AgNPs with different silver contents (59%, 34% and 7% of total Ag), silver core sizes and casein shell thicknesses. The impact of ionic silver on the photosynthetic yield of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii was used as a proxy to estimate the amo…

Antimicrobial beeswax coated polylactide films with silver control release capacity.

2013

Although the application of silver based antimicrobial systems is a widespread technology, its implementation in areas such as food packaging is still challenging. The present paper describes the fabrication of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) coated with beeswax with controlled release properties for sustained antimicrobial performance. Release of silver ions from the polymers was monitored voltammetrically under various conditions (surface contact, immersion in various liquid media and at different pH values) throughout at least 7days. A higher release was noted with decreasing pH while surface release was much slower than the release when immersed in liquid medium. While uncoated films demonstrat…

Silver Oxide Mediated Monotosylation of Poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG): Heterobifunctional PEG via Polymer Desymmetrization

2017

Heterobifunctional poly(ethylene glycol)s (PEGs) are key structures for bioconjugation in the context of the “PEGylation” strategy to enhance blood circulation times of, for example, peptide drugs or “stealth” liposomes. The formation of heterobifunctional PEGs from symmetric PEG diols is challenging because of limited yields of the targeted monofunctional product and difficulties associated with separation steps. On the basis of a detailed comparison of reaction conditions, we have investigated a “polymer desymmetrization” strategy to maximize the yields of monofunctional PEG tosylate. The tosylation reaction in the presence of the heterogeneous catalyst silver oxide and potassium iodide i…

Evaluation of Effects of Various Irrigating Solutions on Chemical Structure of Root Canal Dentin Using FTIR, SEM, and EDS: An In Vitro Study

2022

Background: Sequential chemical application for irrigating a root canal during chemomechanical debridement can affect the dentin microstructure. Understanding the effects of various irrigants on chemical properties of dentin can elucidate their effects on physical properties and thereby explain the higher incidence of structural failure in endodontically treated teeth. This in vitro research aimed to compare and evaluate the effects of three different irrigating solutions on the chemical structure of root canal dentin in extracted human teeth. Methods: Forty-eight extracted single-rooted mandibular premolar teeth were sectioned at the cemento–enamel junction by a diamond disc and were…

Retrograde transport of sodium selenite and intracellular injection of micro-ruby: a combined method to describe the morphology of zinc-rich neurones.

2003

Abstract Zinc is found in synaptic vesicles in a large number of glutamatergic systems. Its involvement in neurotransmission and neurological disorders has been suggested. There are methods for tracing these circuits, but they do not fill the dendritic tree. In this study, extracellular selenite injections in vivo were combined with intracellular injection of fluorochromes in fixed tissue to reveal the morphology of these zinc-rich neurones. Intraperitoneal and intracerebral injections of sodium selenite alone or intracerebral injections of selenite combined with bisbenzimide were made in the visual cortex of the rat in order to locate the somata of zinc-rich neurones. After 24 h of retrogr…
