Rosmini e Tocqueville. Le ragioni cristiane del liberalismo

2020

Molecular phylogeny of the Notostraca

2012

Abstract We used a combined analysis of one nuclear (28S rDNA) and three mitochondrial markers (COI, 12S rDNA, 16S rDNA) to infer the molecular phylogeny of the Notostraca, represented by samples from the six continents that are inhabited by this group of branchiopod crustaceans. Our results confirm the monophyly of both extant notostracan genera Triops and Lepidurus with good support in model based and maximum parsimony analyses. We used branchiopod fossils as a calibration to infer divergence times among notostracan lineages and accounted for rate heterogeneity among lineages by applying relaxed-clock models. Our divergence date estimates indicate an initial diversification into the gener…

The prologue and the fi rst stasimon of Oedipus at Colonus: a comparative study

2017

In this paper we analyze the fi rst stasimon of the tragedy Oedipus at Colonus of Sophocles based …

Uncovering the hidden actors with the help of Latour: the ‘making’ of The Second Sex

2010

Singing to the Wind

2021

Abstract This paper focuses on a passage of Himerius’ Oration 47 (Simon. fr. 251 Poltera = 535 PMG + p. 157 SLG), where Simonides is cited for a song that leads a ship with favourable winds, and on a passage in Plutarch’s Quaestiones Convivales (722b–c) quoting a Simonidean fragment (17 Poltera = 595 PMG) on the propagation of sounds through still air. I argue that they both can be linked with the Argonautic myth of Orpheus. In fact, the former might have some connections with the myth of Oreithyia and Boreas, parents of Zetes and Kalaïs, involved in the Argonautic expedition; moreover, it has some similarities with a fragment from Euripides’ Hypsipyle (752g Kannicht) representing Orpheus o…

The secrets of men since born: Il Machiavelli di Lord Acton

2011

Lord Acton was one of the most eminent intellectuals of the Victorian age. His political thought aimed at reconciling his Catholic faith with liberal prin-ciples. Although he has never written a book, his essays expressed an histo-riography that has exerted great influence in the study of history, the most known example of which is the Cambridge Modern History, conceived by Lord Acton himself. This article aims at showing that his interpretation of Ma-chiavelli, expressed in the introduction to the famous edition of the Prince edited by Arthur Burd, is a precious testimony of the widespread circulation of Machiavellian thought in Europe.

On eleven-dimensional supergravity and chern?SIMONS Theory

2012

We probe in some depth into the structure of eleven-dimensional, osp(32|1)-based Chern-Simons supergravity, as put forward by Troncoso and Zanelli (TZ) in 1997. We find that the TZ Lagrangian may be cast as a polynomial in 1/l, where l is a length, and compute explicitly the first three dominant terms. The term proportional to 1/l^9 turns out to be essentially the Lagrangian of the standard 1978 supergravity theory of Cremmer, Julia and Scherk, thus establishing a previously unknown relation between the two theories. The computation is nontrivial because, when written in a sufficiently explicit way, the TZ Lagrangian has roughly one thousand non-explicitly Lorentz-covariant terms. Specially…
