The attempt to cure illnesses by having recourse to music is one of the most interesting phenomena of ancient Greek culture, but also one of the most controversial, because of the complex relations between religion, magic, medicine and music constituting its background. The article analyses unpublished instructions written by a vice-prior of the Order of St. John in the late seventeenth century. They were directed at the conventual chaplains providing religious support to knights, soldiers and crew (including slave rowers) during the naval campaigns of the Order galleys, the so-called “caravane”. On one hand the work was inspired by literature on the “Christian soldier” (whose authors were often Jesuits), on the other it brought together the spiritual care issues directly experienced by the same chaplains on board. The Bishop's Palace in Santa Lucia del Mela (Messina) was built from 1607, commissioned by Don Simone Rao Grimaldi, as prestigious seat for his successors. The riliefs, which are stored in the Archivo General de Simancas, all together with the evaluation of the building and the deed of gift to Filippo III, and the documentary findings due to local scholars, offer the change to consider the constructive issue of a building still less well-known and his "mysterious" architect.

L'opera ripercorre in maniera storico-critica l'evoluzione della scrittura latina dalle sue origini e prime attestazioni nel VI secolo a. C sino alla prima diffusione della stampa, procedendo oltre il XV secolo soltanto per quelle manifestazioni grafiche che mostrino caratteristiche tali da essere individuate e descritte con il metodo paleografico. Divisa in cinque parti, analizza dapprima l'età romana e il passaggio dalla maiuscola alla minuscola per entrare quindi nel periodo del particolarismo grafico e da qui alla riunificazione in età carolingia e ottoniana.
