Numerical analysis of light soaking phenomenon in Ruthenium based Dye Sensitized Solar Cells

2017

Dye Sensitized Solar Cells (DSSCs) are widely considered one of the most promising third generation photovoltaic devices, especially thanks to their relatively low cost if compared to conventional solar cells. An interesting phenomenon affecting such devices is the so-called light soaking effect, consisting in the increase of cell main electrical parameters after the exposition to solar light. In this work, starting from the experimental characterization carried out on Ruthenium-based DSSCs, we report on a series of numerical analysis performed to better describe the above-mentioned light soaking effect in order to show the relationship between such phenomenon and the main physical paramete…

Design of compensated multiport waveguide junctions considering mechanization effects

2015

Abstract A new tool for the rigorous and efficient design of compensated multiport waveguide junctions, considering the mechanization effects due to low-cost manufacture techniques, is presented. Several new designs for a great variety of key components, present in modern microwave and millimetre-wave equipment, are proposed taking into account the introduction of rounded corners in the rectangular waveguide access ports. The new implemented tool permits to control and compensate for the potential degradation of the wide-band performance of such components prior to their fabrication, thus achieving an optimal design. All the presented results have been successfully validated by comparing th…

Validation of a method for measuring the retinal thickness with Shack–Hartmann aberrometry in an artificial eye

2015

In Shack–Hartmann aberrometry, it is assumed that a wave front emerges from a single point focused on a retina. However, the retina is a multi-layered structure and reflections may occur from several layers. This may result in several overlapping spot patterns on the CCD due to different vergences of the outgoing wave fronts. The amount by which these spot patterns are displaced may contain information about the retinal thickness. In this study, we perform simulations of formation of double spots in a living eye and also apply this method to measure the thickness of an artificial retina with a simple structure. We also compare the results obtained with artificial eye and compare them to the…

Likelihood Calculations in Paternity Testing on the Basis of DNA-Fingerprints

1990

DNA-fingerprints seem to be a powerful tool in paternity testing. But the quantification of the results in terms of likelihood and likelihood ratios is a problem, because in most cases the correct genetic model and its parameters are not known. Two approaches have been suggested to circumvent these problems. The use of band sharing rates to distinguish between pairs of relatives and pairs of unrelated individuals, and the calculation of likelihood ratios on the basis of simplifying assumptions. The first approach reduces the available genetic evidence to “phenotypic” similarities. The second one makes unjustified simplifying assumptions. These two decision strategies have to be examined wit…

Estimating completeness in cancer registries--comparing capture-recapture methods in a simulation study.

2008

Completeness of registration is one of the quality indicators usually reported by cancer registries. This allows researchers to assess how useful and representative the data is. Several methods have been suggested to estimate completeness. In this paper a multi-state model for the process of cancer diagnosis and treatment is presented. In principle, every contact with a doctor during diagnosis, treatment, and aftercare can give rise to a cancer registry notification with a certain probability. Therefore the states included in the model are "incident tumour" and "death" but also contacts with doctors such as consultation of a general practitioner or specialised doctor, diagnostic procedures,…

Estimation of Electrical Pathways Finding Minimal Cost Paths from Electro-Anatomical Mapping of the Left Ventricle

2014

The electrical activation of the heart is a complex physiological process that is essential for the understanding of several cardiac dysfunctions, such as ventricular tachycardia VT. Nowadays, electro-anatomical mappings of patient-specific activation times on the left ventricle surface can be estimated, providing crucial information to the clinicians for guiding cardiac treatment. However, some electrical pathways of particular interest such as Purkinje or still viable conduction channels are difficult to interpret in these maps. We present here a novel method to find some of these electrical pathways using minimal cost paths computations on surface maps. Experiments to validate the propos…

Unsupervised Numerical Characterization in Determining the Borders of Malignant Skin Tumors from Spectral Imagery

2021

For accurate removal of malignant skin tumors, it is crucial to assure the complete removal of the lesions. In the case of certain ill-defined tumors, it is clinically challenging to see the true borders of the tumor. In this paper, we introduce several computationally efficient approaches based on spectral imaging to guide clinicians in delineating tumor borders. First, we present algorithms that can be used effectively with simulated skin reflectance data. By using simulated data, we gain detailed information about the sensitivity of the different approaches and how variables defined by algorithms act in the skin model. Second, we demonstrate the performance of the algorithms with spectra…
