Simulation Software for Flow of Fluid with Suspended Point Particles in Complex Domains: Application to Matrix Diffusion

2013

Matrix diffusion is a phenomenon in which tracer particles convected along a flow channel can diffuse into porous walls of the channel, and it causes a delay and broadening of the breakthrough curve of a tracer pulse. Analytical and numerical methods exist for modeling matrix diffusion, but there are still some features of this phenomenon, which are difficult to address using traditional approaches. To this end we propose to use the lattice-Boltzmann method with point-like tracer particles. These particles move in a continuous space, are advected by the flow, and there is a stochastic force causing them to diffuse. This approach can be extended to include particle-particle and particle-wall…

Teaching mechanical oscillations using an integrate curriculum

1997

Abstract A set of teaching materials dealing with harmonic oscillations was developed as part of a research project investigating the influence of different pedagogical tools on physics learning. The materials incorporate simulation software and laboratory activities associated with Teacher and Student Units. The project involved research groups at seven Italian universities and the materials have been trialled in high schools nation‐wide. This paper describes the experimental protocol for the use of these materials in pilot classes and the evaluation of student learning and teacher training results. The intervention was found to improve physics education at school praxis level and to promo…

Evaluating Infrastructure Alternatives for Regional Water Supply Systems by Model-assisted Cost-benefit Analysis – A Case Study from Apulia, Italy

2014

The main challenge associated to regional water supply systems planning lies in understanding the best infrastructure alternatives to improve service given a certain configuration of the resources system. While cost-effectiveness assessments are still widespread in this type of analyses, they do not account for the fact that, especially in mature systems, service improvements tend to follow the law of marginal diminishing returns, so that a cost – benefit assessment should be preferable. Both costs and benefits can be organized into a cost-benefit analysis (CBA) framework. In a complex system, a model reproducing its topology and characteristics better describes the impacts of the alternati…

A Simulation of daylight levels for the determination of visual comfort in large spaces

2007

In sizable environments, such as the collective areas of a big university building, characterised by very long corridors, large hallways and broad glazed surfaces, the daytime illumination factor is often only excellent near to the latter, due to their predominantly horizontal, rather than vertical, nature. His study, which has been carried out thanks to a simulation software, shows the results of a correlation between light contributions, come out from the wide glass surface and those of a big skylight which cross lenghtways the main part of the building. Such results have been compared with some instrumental measurements considering the shifting and getting from them important information…

A Simulation Software for the Evaluation of Vulnerabilities in Reputation Management Systems

2019

Multi-agent distributed systems are characterized by autonomous entities that interact with each other to provide, and/or request, different kinds of services. In several contexts, especially when a reward is offered according to the quality of service, individual agents (or coordinated groups) may act in a selfish way. To prevent such behaviours, distributed Reputation Management Systems (RMSs) provide every agent with the capability of computing the reputation of the others according to direct past interactions, as well as indirect opinions reported by their neighbourhood. This last point introduces a weakness on gossiped information that makes RMSs vulnerable to malicious agents’ intent …

nalysis, Modeling and Simulation of Mechatronic Systems using the Bond Graph Method

2011

The Bond Graph is the proper choice of physical system used for: (i) Modeling which can be applied to systems combining multidisciplinary energy domains, (ii) Analysis to provide a great value proposition for finding the algebraic loops within the system enabling the process of troubleshooting and eliminating the defects by using the proper component(s) to fix the causality conflict even without being acquainted in the proper system, and (iii) Simulation facilitated through derived state space equations from the Bond Graph model is solved using industrial simulation software, such as 20-Sim. The Bond Graph technique is a graphical language of modeling, in which component energy ports are co…

Bond graph modeling and simulation of wind turbine systems

2013

Published version of an article in the journal: Journal of Mechanical Science and Technology. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s12206-013-0435-x This paper addresses the problem of bond graph methodology as a graphical approach for the modeling of wind turbine generating systems. The purpose of this paper is to show some of the benefits the bond graph approach has, in contributing a model for wind turbine systems. We will present a nonlinear model of a wind turbine generating system, containing blade pitch, drive train, tower motion and generator. All which will be modeled by means of bond graph. We will especially focus on the drive train, and show the differ…

Further Results on Modeling, Analysis, and Control Synthesis for Offshore Wind Turbine Systems

2014

Renewable energy is a hot topic all over the world. Nowadays, there are several sustainable renewable power solutions out there; hydro, wind, solar, wave, and biomass to name a few. Most countries have a tendency to want to become greener. In the past, all new wind parks were installed onshore. During the last decade, more and more wind parks were installed offshore, in shallow water. This chapter investigates a comparative study on the modeling, analysis, and control synthesis for the offshore wind turbine systems. More specifically, an \( {\mathcal{H}}_{\infty } \) static output-feedback control design with constrained information is designed. Constrained information indicates that a rema…
