Integration of Building Simulation and Life Cycle Assessment: A TRNSYS Application
2016
Abstract The study proposes a tool developed within the TRNSYS environment aimed at integrating its building simulation features during the use phase with a Life Cycle Assessment approach. The tool can be used to investigate the relevance of each life-cycle step of the building on the primary energy consumption and global warming potential. The Life Cycle stages can be modelled with different approaches: direct input of the embodied energy and global warming potential values for each life cycle step as defined in the EN 15978, use of an internal database of embodied energy and global warming potential of construction materials and energy systems, direct connections of building simulation ou…
The Effect of Advanced Traveller Information Systems (ATIS) on public transport demand and its uncertainty
2009
Advanced Traveller Information Systems (ATISs) include a broad range of advanced computer and communication technologies. These systems are designed to provide transit riders pre-trip and real-time information, to make better informed decisions regarding their mode of travel, planned routes and travel times. ATISs include in-vehicle displays, terminal or wayside based information centres, information by phone or mobile and internet. In this article, a Stated Preference survey has been carried out in order to know the preferences of public transport’s customers related to different ATISs and their willingness to pay in Palermo. An ordered probit demand model has been calibrated to determine …
Timber anti-seismic devices in historical architecture in the Mediterranean area
2017
Experimental analysis of the contact pressure distribution in an off-road tyre
2009
In this paper the results of experimental tests are shown, lead by extended method of measurement, on a tire for an off-road vehicle 175/82 R16, inserting Prescale paper at the contact with the ground. The experimental analysis of the pressures is lead, in cross-sectional direction, in 5 zones correspondents to the middle of the single dowels constituting the tread. The results are analyzed by means of software predisposed to the scope so as to go back easily to the value of the pressure. The obtained results are critically analyzed and the result are compared with those obtained by the formulas of Rowland and MacLaurin, and by the nominal pressure at ground, concluding that the expression …
A Comparative Analysis of the Reliability of Simple and Two-Level Checkpointing Techniques in two Different Distributed Industrial Control System Arc…
2003
In Distributed industrial control systems it is necessary to guarantee certain reliability level. In this sense, Checkpointing and Rollback techniques offer interesting possibilities to achieve fault tolerance without appreciable cost and complexity increment. Several Checkpointing techniques have been proposed. Most of them suppose the presence of stable storage in the system. But distributed industrial control systems usually do not dispose of this kind of storage. So, another storage strategy has to be employed. If Checkpoints were locally stored (Simple Checkpointing), the system tolerates only transient faults. If Checkpoints were locally, at the same node, and, additionally, at anothe…
Development of 3D Anti-Swing Control for Hydraulic Knuckle Boom Crane
2021
In this paper, 3D anti-swing control for a hydraulic loader crane is presented. The difference between hydraulic and electric cranes are discussed to show the challenges associated with hydraulic actuation. The hanging load dynamics and relevant kinematics of the crane are derived to model the system and create the 3D anti-swing controller. The anti-swing controller generates a set of tool point velocities which are added to the electro-hydraulic motion controller via feedforward. A dynamic simulation model of the crane is made, and the control system is evaluated in simulations with a path controller in actuator space. Simulation results show significant reduction in the load swing angles …
Automated Kick Control Procedure for an Influx in Managed Pressure Drilling Operations
2016
Within drilling of oil and gas wells, the Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD) method with active control of wellbore pressure during drilling has partly evolved from conventional well control procedures. However, for MPD operations the instrumentation is typically more extensive compared to conventional drilling. Despite this, any influx of formation fluids (commonly known as a kick) during MPD operations is typically handled by conventional well control methods, at least if the kick is estimated to be larger than a threshold value. Conventional well control procedures rely on manual control of the blow out preventer, pumps, and choke valves and do not capitalize on the benefits from the instru…
Once t hrough m ultistage fl ash d esalination: gPROMS d ynamic and s teady s tate m odeling
2010
This study focuses on modeling the steady state and dynamic behavior of the multistage flash desalination process (MSF) using gPROMS. This modeling tool allows for simultaneous coding of the system dynamics and steady state performance. In addition, it allows the use of the most efficient solvers for a set of non-linear differential and algebraic equations describing the MSF process. The system model and analysis are based on actual plant data that includes 21 flashing stages and a capacity of 378 kg/s (32,000 m3/d). The simulated unit is part of a massive MSF installation in Doha, Kuwait. System's dynamic behavior is simulated by a step change in the input values of the main operating para…
Modeling and Parameter Identification of Deflections in Planetary Stage of Wind Turbine Gearbox
2012
The main focus of this paper is the experimental and numerical investigation of a 750[kW] wind turbine gearbox. A detailed model of the gearbox with main shaft has been created using MSC.Adams. Special focus has been put on modeling the planet carrier (PLC) in the gearbox. For this purpose experimental data from a drive train test set up has been analyzed using parameter identification to quantify misalignments. Based on the measurements a combination of main shaft misalignment and planet carrier deflection has been identified. A purely numerical model has been developed and it shows good accordance with the experimental data.
A DC behavioral electrical model for quasi-linear spin-valve devices including thermal effects for circuit simulation
2011
An advanced model for quasi-linear spin-valve (SV) structures is presented for circuit simulation purposes. The model takes into account electrical and thermal effects in a coupled way in order to allow a coherent representation of the sensor physics for design purposes of electronics applications based on these sensor devices. The model was implemented in Verilog-A and used in a commercial circuit simulator. For testing the model, different SV structures have been specifically fabricated and measured. The characterization included DC measurements as well as steady-state and transient thermal analysis. From the experimental data, the parameters of the model have been extracted. The model re…
