Robust three-dimensional best-path phase-unwrapping algorithm that avoids singularity loops.
2009
In this paper we propose a novel hybrid three-dimensional phase-unwrapping algorithm, which we refer to here as the three-dimensional best-path avoiding singularity loops (3DBPASL) algorithm. This algorithm combines the advantages and avoids the drawbacks of two well-known 3D phase-unwrapping algorithms, namely, the 3D phase-unwrapping noise-immune technique and the 3D phase-unwrapping best-path technique. The hybrid technique presented here is more robust than its predecessors since it not only follows a discrete unwrapping path depending on a 3D quality map, but it also avoids any singularity loops that may occur in the unwrapping path. Simulation and experimental results have shown that …
Using simulation to analyze renewables penetration in Brazil
In the new global economy, renewable energy has become a central issue for the competitive. Renewables are the main source of the Brazilian electricity generation sector. This article analyzes the vulnerabilities of hydropower generation and wind power penetration in Brazil. The study presents the results obtained from preliminary analyses of renewable energy’s market penetration in Brazil. Simulation results show the climate variation effects on hydroelectricity generation as well as wind power penetration.
Editorial: Special issue on Simulation in Transportation
2020
Transportation systems and related policies are complex and cross-sectoral, covering different socio-economic and management aspects, and involving multiple stakeholders (such as users, operators, and public policymakers). Mobility and accessibility are central to economic and societal well-being, yet the process of doing so may have significant impacts on land use, environment, and public health. Furthermore, the many feedbacks involved occur at varying degrees of spatial, temporal, and socio-demographic granularity and levels of uncertainty. Simulation models are well established in transportation-related operational research and management science, and the alternative approaches of Syste…
Exploring intellectual capital in a call centre through a 'system dynamics' resource based view
2008
This paper examines alternative Intellectual Capital (IC) investment policies in a dynamically com plex system in order to explain differences in firm performance. The analysis is supported through the use of a System Dynamics (SD) simulation model. This paper is based on the hypothesis that in order to explain superior performance, it is not sufficient to look at the endowment of strategic resources; it also requires an analysis of the dynamics of resource accumulation and depletion processes, which stem from management policies. To assess the impact of ICon company performance, a conceptual framework and an SD simulation model are developed. Finally, the results from alternative scenario…
Simulation and Test of UAV Tasks With Resource-Constrained Hardware in the Loop
2021
Simulations are indispensable to reduce costs and risks when developing and testing algorithms for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) especially for applications in high risk scenarios like search and rescue (SAR) operations and post-disaster damage assessment. Many UAV applications require real-time tasks for which the timeliness of computations is fundamental. However, standard simulation tools are not guaranteed to run in sync with real-time events, leading to unreliable assessments of the ability of the target hardware to perform specific tasks. In this work we present a simulation and test system able to run UAV tasks on resource-constrained target hardware possibly adopted in these applic…
Motor imagery
2015
International audience; Before participating in a space mission, astronauts undergo parabolic-flight and underwater training to facilitate their subsequent adaptation to weightlessness. Unfortunately, similar training methods can't be used to prepare re adaptation to planetary gravity. Here, we propose a quick, simple and inexpensive approach that could be used to prepare astronauts both for the absence and for the renewed presence of gravity. This approach is based on motor imagery (MI), a process in which actions are produced in working memory without any overt output. Training protocols based on MI have repeatedly been shown to modify brain circuitry and to improve motor performance in h…
Service platform implementation for simulation systems
2016
Nykyään olemassa olevia simulaatiojärjestelmiä hyödynnetään koneiden itseoppimisen ja tietojärjestelmäpohjaisten (KDD) alustojen kehityksessä. Tämän takia simulaatioiden merkitys ja vaikutus tulee kasvamaan suuressa määrin jokapäiväisessä elinympäristössämme. Yritykset kuten Ahphabet (Google), Facebook ja SpaceX edustavat yrityksinä kehitystä mallintamiseen ja simulointiin siirtyvästä tavasta kehittää MDA pohjaisia tuotteita itsenäisesti toimivista autoista avaruustutkimukseen. Ihmisen näkökulmasta nykyinen kehitys tulee muuttamaan ympäristöä tavalla, jossa kanssakäyminen koneiden kanssa muuttuu luonnolliseksi osaksi arkea. Tutkielman Tarkoituksena oli suunnitella ja toteuttaa palvelualusta…
Getting even with CLE
2018
In the landscape of approaches toward the simulation of Lattice Models with complex action the Complex Langevin (CL) appears as a straightforward method with a simple, well defined setup. Its applicability, however, is controlled by certain specific conditions which are not always satisfied. We here discuss the procedures to meet these conditions and the estimation of systematic errors and present some actual achievements.
One is not enough: On the effects of reference genome for the mapping and subsequent analyses of short-reads.
2020
Mapping of high-throughput sequencing (HTS) reads to a single arbitrary reference genome is a frequently used approach in microbial genomics. However, the choice of a reference may represent a source of errors that may affect subsequent analyses such as the detection of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and phylogenetic inference. In this work, we evaluated the effect of reference choice on short-read sequence data from five clinically and epidemiologically relevant bacteria (Klebsiella pneumoniae, Legionella pneumophila, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Serratia marcescens). Publicly available whole-genome assemblies encompassing the genomic diversity of these species…
Seven Mathematical Models of Hemorrhagic Shock
2021
Although mathematical modelling of pressure-flow dynamics in the cardiocirculatory system has a lengthy history, readily finding the appropriate model for the experimental situation at hand is often a challenge in and of itself. An ideal model would be relatively easy to use and reliable, besides being ethically acceptable. Furthermore, it would address the pathogenic features of the cardiovascular disease that one seeks to investigate. No universally valid model has been identified, even though a host of models have been developed. The object of this review is to describe several of the most relevant mathematical models of the cardiovascular system: the physiological features of circulator…
