Natural ventilative cooling in school buildings in Sicily

The paper shows analysis of the impact on thermal comfort of natural ventilation in a nonresidential Mediterranean case-study. Results are based on the EN 15251 approach on adaptive comfort. Different scenarios are proposed, granting an improvement of up to 10% in the number of summer comfort hours.
A graph colouring model for assigning a heterogeneous workforce to a given schedule

Abstract We analyze a heterogeneous workforce assignment problem in which the minimum number of workers required to carry out a machine load plan is calculated. The problem is formulated as a restricted vertex colouring problem and a branch and bound algorithm is presented. The special characteristics of the graph to be coloured allow an efficient implementation of the branch and bound. Computational results show that the algorithm can solve problems of 50 activities, 5, 10 and 15 machines and between 2 to 15 different types of workers in just a few seconds.
Modern small wind turbine design solutions comparison in terms of estimated cost to energy output ratio

This paper presents a series of estimations performed in order to establish the actual cost-effectiveness of three different small wind turbines (SWTs) design solutions. Each of them was evaluated and based on their power curves and installation costs, using wind data from a numerical weather prediction (WNP) model, a return on investment (ROI) period was calculated. The chosen turbines are: a standard three bladed horizontal axis wind turbine (HAWT), an advanced diffuser augmented HAWT and a Darrieus type vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT). Short-radius centrifugation offers a promising and affordable countermeasure to the adverse effects of prolonged weightlessness. However, head movements made in a fast rotating environment elicit Coriolis effects, which seriously compromise sensory and motor processes. We found that participants can adapt to these Coriolis effects when exposed intermittently to high rotation rates and, at the same time, can maintain their perceptual-motor coordination in stationary environments. This paper is devoted to the modeling and simulation of a full-scale commercially available magnetorheological (MR) brake installed in a semi-active suspension (SAS) system. The analysis of the Bouc-Wen and Dahl mathematical models of MR damper is presented. Influence of their parameters on the response is explored. Subsequently, by using the neural networks, the parameters characterizing each model are estimated. Topological virtual screening: a way to find new anticonvulsant drugs from chemical diversity.

A topological virtual screening (tvs) test is presented, which is capable of identifying new drug leaders with anticonvulsant activity. Molecular structures of both anticonvulsant-active and non active compounds, extracted from the Merck Index database, were represented using topological indexes. By means of the application of a linear discriminant analysis to both sets of structures, a topological anticonvulsant model (tam) was obtained, which defines a connectivity function. On the basis of this model, 41 new structures with anticonvulsant activity have been identified by a topological virtual screening.

The great cost associated with the development of new anabolic-androgenic steroid (AASs) makes necessary the development of computational methods that shorten the drug discovery pipeline. Toward this end, quantum, and physicochemical molecular descriptors, plus linear discriminant analysis (LDA) were used to analyze the anabolic/androgenic activity of structurally diverse steroids and to discover novel AASs, as well as also to give a structural interpretation of their anabolic-androgenic ratio (AAR). In the paper, a fully 3D finite-volume numerical model is developed and employed for the prediction of wind-induced flows in a regular channel and in a square basin with a complex bathymetry. Numerical results are compared with laboratory experiments.Numerical tests are then performed to investigate whether simplifying assumptions about the pressure distribution and the turbulente stresses representation can be employed in the simulation of wind-driven flows.
