3D finite element analysis of tool wear in machining

2008

Abstract The paper is focused on the 3D numerical prediction of tool wear in metal cutting operations. In particular, an analytical model, able to take into account the diffusive wear mechanism, was implemented through a specific subroutine. Furthermore, an advanced approach to model heat transfer phenomena at the tool–chip interface was included in the numerical simulation. The adopted simulation strategy gave the possibility to properly evaluate the tool wear. The 3D FEM results were compared with some experimental data obtained turning AISI 1045 steel using uncoated WC tool; a good agreement was found out.

Central Bursting Defects in Drawing and Extrusion: Numerical and Ultrasonic Evaluation

1993

Abstract A new approach for the prediction of central bursting defects in extrusion and drawing is proposed: a finite element analysis of the processes has been carried out, and the obtained results have been elaborated by means of a post-processor, which, employing a proper ductile fracture criterion, is able to suggest if and where the central burst occur. An ultrasonic control system able to detect the insurgence of defects with a resolution of 0.2 mm. has been setup in order to verify the predictive capability of the model. The experimental results show a good agreement with the numerical predictions confirming the effectiveness of the proposed approach, whose industrial application app…

Measuring of Geometrical Precision of Some parts Obtained by Asymmetric Incremental Forming Process After Trimming

2007

Asymmetric Incremental Forming exalts the advantages of Incremental Forming process since no dies are strictly necessary. In this way complex geometries may be manufactured with a very simple clamping equipment. On the other hand, this characteristic determines some intrinsic drawbacks which penalise its industrial suitability; first of all, the dimensional control of the manufactured part is a still open point for researchers all over the world. Several approaches have been already proposed in the last years to solve the problem, resulting only in partial solutions. At the same time, up to now, the numerical simulation did not supply significant aid to the designers, due to the problem com…

DEPENDENCE OF MACHINING SIMULATION EFFECTIVENESS ON MATERIAL AND FRICTION MODELLING

2008

Numerical simulation of cutting processes is still a very difficult matter, although some relevant geometrical simplifications and high-performance codes are used. A large number of technical papers have been focused on the predictive capability of the codes: nevertheless the prediction quality is not very satisfactory if the problem is analyzed in a wide sense. In this paper the simple orthogonal cutting process of a plain-carbon steel is investigated taking into account different process conditions (cutting speed and feed rate). Furthermore, four material constitutive equations and three friction models were implemented and a sensitivity analysis was carried out comparing the numerical pr…

Full-wave analysis of industrial microwave applicators: TM modes

2004

In this paper, full-wave analysis of the TE modes of an industrial cylindrical microwave applicator is presented. The dispersion characteristics and fields configurations are shown. These results are obtained by a numerical simulation based on the residue theory. The authors have obtained particular modes called loop modes, which have a complex propagation constant that describes a loop within the complex plane. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Analysis of Offshore Knuckle Boom Crane - Part One: Modeling and Parameter Identification

2013

This paper presents an extensive model of a knuckle boom crane used for pipe handling on offshore drilling rigs. The mechanical system is modeled as a multi-body system and includes the structural flexibility and damping. The motion control system model includes the main components of the crane's electro-hydraulic actuation system. For this a novel black-box model for counterbalance valves is presented, which uses two different pressure ratios to compute the flow through the valve. Experimental data and parameter identification, based on both numerical optimization and manual tuning, are used to verify the crane model. The demonstrated modeling and parameter identification techniques target…

A standard-compliant prototype for PV module curve detection

2014

In this paper, a prototype for PV module curve detection which features low cost and size and ensures high accuracy is proposed. The proposed architecture is based on a buck-boost converter in open-loop configuration. The proposed architecture is fully compliant with actual standard IEC60904. The duty-cycle control algorithm and its own effects on system performances are accurately investigated. The comparison of different duty-cycle patterns is carried out and performance evaluation is performed. Simulation results are shown to perform a valuable comparison of control algorithms. Preliminary experimental results on a laboratory prototype are presented.

A state-space approach to mathematical modeling and parameters identification of vehicle frontal crash

2014

In this paper a state-space estimation procedure that relies on the time-domain analysis of input and output signals is used for mathematical modeling of vehicle frontal crash. The model is a double-spring–mass–damper system, whereby the front mass and real mass represent the chassis and the passenger compartment, respectively. It is observed that the dynamic crash of the model is closer to the dynamic crash from experimental when the mass of the chassis is greater than the mass of the passenger compartment. The dynamic crash depends on pole placement and the estimated parameters. It is noted that when the poles of the model are closer to zero, the dynamic crash of the model is far from the…

Time-Optimal Synthesis for Three Relevant Problems: The Brockett Integrator, the Grushin Plane and the Martinet Distribution

2015

We construct the time-optimal synthesis for 3 problems that are linear in the control and with polytopic constraints in the controls. Namely, the Brockett integrator, the Grushin plane, and the Martinet distribution. The main purpose is to illustrate the steps in solving an optimal control problem and in particular the use of second order conditions. The Grushin and the Martinet case are particularly important: the first is the prototype of a rank-varying distribution, the second of a non-equiregular structure.

Composite nonlinear feedback control for path following of four-wheel independently actuated autonomous ground vehicles

2015

This paper studies the path following control problem for four-wheel independently actuated (FWIA) autonomous ground vehicles (AGVs) through integrated control of active front-wheel steering (AFS) and direct yaw-moment control (DYC). A modified composite nonlinear feedback (CNF) strategy is proposed to improve the transient performance and eliminate the steady-state errors in the path following control considering the tire force saturations, in the presence of the time-varying road curvature for the desired path. The path following is achieved through vehicle lateral and yaw control, i.e., the lateral velocity and yaw rate are simultaneously controlled to track their respective desired valu…
