Intelligent Collaborative Platform for Testing a Product by Virtual Prototyping

2013

This paper presents an integrated platform, based on collaborative environment, which can improve the design and prototyping activities. Collaborative activities in supporting product development and design during all product life-cycle, needs a Digital Factory framework. Demonstration of prototyping in real-time where are available changes in geometry, constraints, or other parameters can be based on virtual and augmented platforms. The mechanical and non-mechanical design needs, or any other virtual experiment can be experimented in virtual laboratory where researchers located in different geographical zones, can work on the improvement of product, by sharing resources and research result…

Human energy interacting interface: Interface to transform environmental energy into human acquired energy

2016

The human body acquires energy in many form to manage their activities. This energy enters into human body in the form of food, beverages or any other external source. Few of the vital nutrients are injected into human body via supplementary medicines, etc. Some of the required energy of human body is absorbed naturally from the environment (e.g. vitamin D through sunlight). Human body absorbs limited energy / nutrients from the environment due to lack of proper transformation of energy aspects of human body. Due to this there is requirement of an interface which can help in transforming the environmental energy for fulfilling some aspects of the human body energy requirements. To understan…

FPGA implementation of a fuel cell emulator

2010

Fuel cell based systems are usually tested with the aid of high-cost and complex auxiliary devices. A fuel cell emulator is an attractive solution for preliminary downward system test. The emulator replaces the effective power source saving cost, volume and hydrogen reserve still ensuring high-accuracy of test results. The use of a highperformance fuel cell model is essential for a successful conclusion of the overall design process. Although the proposed emulator is suitable for each fuel cell type and power level, a 10W Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell emulator is designed and tested. An FPGA based controller models the fuel cell steady-state and dynamic behaviour, including temperature…

Tool-Point Control for a Redundant Heave Compensated Hydraulic Manipulator

2012

Abstract In this paper, theoretical and experimental implementation of heave compensation on a redundant hydraulically actuated manipulator with 3-dof has been carried out. The redundancy is solved using the pseudo-inverse Jacobian method. Techniques for minimizing velocities and avoiding mechanical joint saturations is implemented in the null space joint motion. Model based feed-forward, combined with a PI-controller handles the velocity control of each joint. A time domain simulation model has been developed, experimentally verified, and used for controller parameter tuning. Model verification and experimental results are obtained while the manipulator is exposed to wave disturbances crea…

A knowledge-based master-model approach with application to rotating machinery design

2011

Novel rotating machinery design concepts and architectures are being explored to reduce mass, energy consumption, manufacturing costs, and environmental impact while increasing performance. As component manufacturers supply parts to original equipment manufacturers, it is desirable to design the components using a systems approach so that they are optimized for system-level performance. To accomplish that, suppliers must be able to model and predict the behavior of the whole machinery. Traditional computer-aided design/computer-aided engineering master-modeling approaches enable manual changes to be propagated to linked models. Novel knowledge-based master-modeling approaches enable automa…

Tramway Track: A New Approach for Measuring the Transverse Profile of Worn-Out Rails

2012

Abstract Monitoring the wear condition of the tramway superstructure is one of the key points to guarantee an adequate safety level of the light rail transport system. The purpose of this paper is to suggest a new non-conventionalprocedure for measuring the transverse profile of rails in operation by means of image-processing technique. This methodological approach is based on the “information” contained in high-resolution photographic images of tracks and on specific algorithms which allow to obtain the exact geometric profile of the rails and therefore to measure the state of the rail-head extrados wear.

Proposal for a more accurate physically based S–N curve for welded steel joints

2009

Abstract The present article proposes a more accurate S–N curve in the high cycle fatigue regime for fillet welded joints in steel subjected to constant amplitude loading. The S–N curves are constructed based on a physical model of the fatigue damage evolution. It is a two phase model where the crack initiation is treated by a local weld notch approach. The subsequent growth is based on the concept of the stress intensity factor at the crack front by applying the Paris law. According to the proposed model, the time to crack initiation becomes the dominant part of the fatigue life at low stress range levels. The resulting S–N curves are non-linear for a log–log scale and they do not predict …

A finite/infinite element analysis of thick plate on a layered foundation

2000

Abstract The algorithm of calculations of a thick plate on the Kolar–Nemec's subsoil by the finite/infinite element method is presented. The layered subsoil numerical implementation different from that given by Kolar and Nemec is proposed. The advantages of employing the proposed algorithm to the solutions of plates on layered foundation are then illustrated by numerical example.

Modeling and Simulation of a Cylinder Hoisting System for Real-Time Hardware-in-the-Loop Testing

2016

Summary Modeling-and-simulation software that is used in the design and development of drilling equipment provides testing and redesigning of offshore machines early in the product-development process. Typically, models of offshore equipment are complex and suitable only for offline simulations that allow testing of just predefined functions of the system without the possibility of controlling it with the operator's inputs in real time (RT). This is related to the fact that, usually, complex models put high demands on the computational power of the simulator hardware and, thus, limit its RT performance. On the basis of the authors' observations, it is concluded that RT performance can be di…

Single thermal zone balance solved by Transfer Function Method

2005

We present an algorithm that uses the Z-transform operator to face the problem of heat transmission in a single thermal zone composed by multilayered walls. The method is very flexible and could be adopted to calculate the transfer function coefficients able to simulate the thermal behaviour of a room in free floating. Knowing the transfer function coefficients, it is possible to simulate the dynamic profile of each inner surfaces temperature and furthermore of the inner air temperature. The proposed algorithm is fully described granting maximum clarity. The explicitness of all steps of the calculus make possible the definition of a method that is able to vary all of the calculus parameters…
