Direct experimental observation of mesoscopic fluorous domains in fluorinated room temperature ionic liquids

2017

Fluorinated room temperature ionic liquids (FRTILs) represent a class of solvent media that are attracting great attention due to their IL-specific properties as well as features stemming from their fluorous nature. Medium-to-long fluorous tails constitute a well-defined apolar moiety in the otherwise polar environment. Similarly to the case of alkyl tails, such chains are expected to result in the formation of self-assembled fluorous domains. So far, however, no direct experimental observation has been made of the existence of such structural heterogeneities on the nm scale. We report here the first experimental evidence of the existence of mesoscopic spatial segregation of fluorinated dom…

An ecological dynamics rationale to explain home advantage in professional football

2016

Despite clear findings, research on home advantage in team sports lacks a comprehensive theoretical rationale for understanding why this phenomenon is so compelling. The aim of this study was to provide an explanatory theoretical rationale in ecological dynamics for the influence of home advantage observed in research on professional football. We recorded 30 competitive matches and analyzed 13958 passes, from one highly successful team in the Portuguese Premier League, during season 2010/2011. Performance data were analyzed using the Match Analysis Software—Amisco[Formula: see text] (version 3.3.7.25), allowing us to characterize team activity profiles. Results were interpreted from an ecol…

Some Improvements on Relativistic Positioning Systems

2018

[EN] We make some considerations about Relativistic Positioning Systems (RPS). Four satellites are needed to position a user. First of all we define the main concepts. Errors should be taken into account. Errors depend on the Jacobian transformation matrix. Its Jacobian is proportional to the tetrahedron volume whose vertexes are the four tips of the receiver-satellite unit vectors. If the four satellites are seen by the user on a circumference in the sky, then, the Jacobian and the tetrahedron volume vanish. The users we consider are spacecraft. Spacecraft to be positioned cannot be close to a null Jacobian satellites-user configuration. These regions have to be avoided choosing an appropr…

Generation of nonlinear current-voltage characteristics. A general method

2002

International audience; A general method allowing to construct nonlinear resistors with arbitrary current-voltage (I-V) characteristics is proposed. The example of a cubic I-V characteristic is presented showing a perfect agreement between the theoretical desired resistor and its electronic realization based on analog multipliers.

IMPROVEMENTS IN THE SYSTEMS-BASED MODELS GENERATOR SIGEM

1994

Program generators, for us, are computer programs that produce other computer programs. SIGEM is an expert system program generator that can help in the modeling process of real systems. It is associated with a methodology well adapted to modeling practice. In this paper, we present and compare this methodology with other similar ones. Static models (databases), dynamic models, rule-based expert systems, literal and/or numerical variables, probabilistic uncertainty in data and in functions, dimensioned variables, discrete event simulation, and other related problems can be treated with this methodology. We suggest a systems modeling methodology and a programming tool to increase generality …

This paper investigates the proficiency of support vector machine (SVM) using datasets generated by Tennessee Eastman process simulation for fault detection. Due to its excellent performance in generalization, the classification performance of SVM is satisfactory. SVM algorithm combined with kernel function has the nonlinear attribute and can better handle the case where samples and attributes are massive. In addition, with forehand optimizing the parameters using the cross-validation technique, SVM can produce high accuracy in fault detection. Therefore, there is no need to deal with original data or refer to other algorithms, making the classification problem simple to handle. In order to…

Approximation of exit times for one-dimensional linear diffusion processes

2020

International audience; In order to approximate the exit time of a one-dimensional diffusion process, we propose an algorithm based on a random walk. Such an algorithm was already introduced in both the Brownian context and the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck context, that is for particular time-homogeneous diffusion processes. Here the aim is therefore to generalize this efficient numerical approach in order to obtain an approximation of both the exit time and position for a general linear diffusion. The main challenge of such a generalization is to handle with time-inhomogeneous diffusions. The efficiency of the method is described with particular care through theoretical results and numerical example…

Evaluation of Roundabout Safety Performance through Surrogate Safety Measures from Microsimulation

2018

The paper presents a microsimulation-based approach for roundabout safety performance evaluation. Based on a sample of Slovenian roundabouts, the vehicle trajectories exported from AIMSUN and VISSIM were used to estimate traffic conflicts using the Surrogate Safety Assessment Model (SSAM). AIMSUN and VISSIM were calibrated for single-lane, double-lane and turbo roundabouts using the corresponding empirical capacity function which included critical and follow-up headways estimated through meta-analysis. Based on calibration of the microsimulation models, a crash prediction model from simulated peak hour conflicts for a sample of Slovenian roundabouts was developed. A generalized linear model…

Supporting fine-grained generative model-driven evolution

2010

Published version of an article in the journal: Software and Systems Modeling. Also available on SpringerLink:http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s10270-009-0144-1 In the standard generative Model-driven Architecture (MDA), adapting the models of an existing system requires re-generation and restarting of that system. This is due to a strong separation between the modeling environment and the runtime environment. Certain current approaches remove this separation, allowing a system to be changed smoothly when the model changes. These approaches are, however, based on interpretation of modeling information rather than on generation, as in MDA. This paper describes an architecture that supports fine-gra…

Adoption of bonded magnets in place of sintered NdFeB: Performance and economic considerations on a small power generator

2015

Bonded magnets are giving promising results when adopted to replace expensive rare earth magnets. The possibility to “modulate” the magnetic characteristics by varying the binder percentage allows the opening of new lines of investigation and to face the problem of rare earths cost. In the paper a small power generator prototype has been equipped with bonded magnets realized in the Authors' Laboratories; it has been tested and compared with the original generator mounting NdFeB sintered magnets. FEM simulations are validated by means of experimental tests. Economic comparisons are proposed.
