Abelian varieties and theta functions associated to compact Riemannian manifolds; constructions inspired by superstring theory

2012

We look into a construction of principal abelian varieties attached to certain spin manifolds, due to Witten and Moore-Witten around 2000 and try to place it in a broader framework. This is related to Weil intermediate Jacobians but it also suggests to associate abelian varieties to polarized even weight Hodge structures. The latter construction can also be explained in terms of algebraic groups which might be useful from the point of view of Tannakian categories. The constructions depend on moduli much as in Teichm\"uller theory although the period maps in general are only real analytic. One of the nice features is how the index for certain differential operators canonically associated to …

Gestures and glances - the effects of familiarity and expertise on singers’ and pianists’ bodily movements in ensemble rehearsals

2009

The types, functions, sources and effects of musicians’ bodily movements have been studied in soloists’ live and recorded performances, to a lesser extent in their practice sessions and rehearsals, and in ensemble musicians’ rehearsals. The present study explored the effects of familiarity and expertise on singers’ and pianists’ bodily movements and eye contact in ensemble rehearsals. Two established singer-pianist duos rehearsed three songs in different combinations. Quantitative and qualitative analyses were undertaken. Bodily movement and eye contact were used to consolidate technical details, convey musical information and coordinate entries. Singers used gestures to reflect and support…

Dying to Save Lives: Zell Kravinsky, Peter Singer, and Lethal Organ Donation

2018

In 2003, after disbursing the bulk of his accumulated fortune of forty-five million dollars to various charities, Zell Kravinsky made the even greater altruistic decision to donate one of his kidneys to a complete stranger. In doing so he incurred the wrath of many in the psychiatric and health professions who questioned his sanity. In response, Kravinsky argued that refusal to donate would have constituted a violation of his belief in “maximum human utility” – a philosophical concept that insists we give up as much as we can for the good of others. Kravinsky has since stated that he would undergo a lethal organ donation in order to save a greater number of people from death, or to save peo…

Health anxiety instead of performance anxiety among opera singers

2009

Opera singers experience certain work strains; they work as soloists, depend highly on their vocal functioning and have to exhibit a consistent level of superior performance throughout a long career. The literature also shows that they report increased levels of hypochondriasis and extensive concern about vocal functioning and somatic impairment. Data from a previous study (Sandgren, 2002) were further explored to better understand the opera singers’ preoccupation with vocal functioning. The aim of the study was to explore if psychological and voice-related variables would be related to concepts of performance anxiety and health anxiety. The results indicated that psychological and voice-re…

Vita e martirio di san Bartolomeo apostolo

2012

Study of vocalists' use of emotions in performance preparation

2015

Musicians and educators understand the importance of expressivity in vocal performance. Despite the acceptance of expressivity as a crucial element in musical performance, educators have reported addressing it only cursorily or not addressing it at all when preparing for a performance. For these reasons, this research has focused on techniques used by trained musicians when preparing a performance, to be adapted and applied for use by teachers with their large vocal ensembles. Participants in this study were enrolled in vocal / operatic performance programs at universities in the United States, Ireland, Finland, and Hong Kong. Their progress was tracked throughout the semester by three ques…
