The effect of ions at the surface of calcium oxalate monohydrate crystals on cell-crystal interactions

2003

Magnesium is an abundant ion in biologic systems, including renal tubular fluid; however, the precise role of magnesium during the interaction of calcium oxalate crystals with cells has not been previously defined. In addition, the respective roles of calcium and hydrogen ions during the cell-crystal bonding interaction remain poorly defined. Here we report an atomic level three-dimensional study of a single crystal of calcium oxalate monohydrate (COM; whewellite) which was bathed in a solution of magnesium hexahydrate for 1 year. Magnesium was not incorporated into the structure of whewellite to any significant degree. Instead, COM accepted magnesium primarily as an adsorbate in a binding …

Integrated treatment of first episode psychosis with online training (e-learning): study protocol for a randomised controlled trial

2014

Background: The integrated treatment of first episode psychosis has been shown to improve functionality and negative symptoms in previous studies. In this paper, we describe a study of integrated treatment (individual psychoeducation complementary to pharmacotherapy) versus treatment as usual, comparing results at baseline with those at 6-month re-assessment (at the end of the study) for these patients, and online training of professionals to provide this complementary treatment, with the following objectives: 1) to compare the efficacy of individual psychoeducation as add-on treatment versus treatment as usual in improving psychotic and mood symptoms; 2) to compare adherence to medication,…

Simulating pump-probe photo-electron and absorption spectroscopy on the attosecond time-scale with time-dependent density-functional theory

2013

Molecular absorption and photoelectron spectra can be efficiently predicted with real-time time-dependent density functional theory. We show herein how these techniques can be easily extended to study time-resolved pump-probe experiments, in which a system response (absorption or electron emission) to a probe pulse is measured in an excited state. This simulation tool helps with the interpretation of fast-evolving attosecond time-resolved spectroscopic experiments, in which electronic motion must be followed at its natural timescale. We show how the extra degrees of freedom (pump-pulse duration, intensity, frequency, and time delay), which are absent in a conventional steady-state experimen…

An analytical solution for multilayered beams subjected to ends loads

2014

An alternative model for multilayered beams undergoing axial, shear and bending loads applied at the beam's ends is developed. It is based on a layer-wise kinematics, which inherently fulfills the equilibrium equations at layer level and the interface continuity conditions. This kinematics is suitably expressed by introducing a set of generalized variables representative of the beam midline displacement field, which become the primary variables of the problem governing equations. As a consequence, the proposed beam model exhibits the computational characteristics of an equivalent single layer model and possesses the accuracy of layer-wise beam theories, as well. Closed form solutions for di…

Electron and Energy Transfer Mechanisms: The Double Nature of TiO2 Heterogeneous Photocatalysis

2021

Photocatalytic chemical transformations in the presence of irradiated TiO2 are generally considered in terms of interfacial electron transfer. However, more elusive energy-transfer-driven reactions have been also hypothesized to occur, mainly on the basis of the indirect evidence of detected reaction products whose existence could not be justified simply by electron transfer. Unlike in homogeneous and colloidal systems, where energy transfer mechanisms have been investigated deeply for several organic syntheses, understanding of similar processes in heterogeneous systems is at only a nascent level. However, this gap of knowledge can be filled by considering the important achievements of syn…

Metabolic mapping with bioluminescence: basic and clinical relevance

2002

This review is focused on metabolic mapping in biological tissue with quantitative bioluminescence and single photon imaging. Metabolites, such as ATP, glucose and lactate, can be imaged quantitatively and within microscopic dimensions in cryosections from shock frozen biological specimens using enzyme reactions and light emission by luciferases. The technique has been applied in numerous targets and models of experimental biomedical research, such as multicellular spheroids, various organs of laboratory animals in a physiological or pathophysiological state, and even in plant seeds. Among numerous other aspects, data obtained with this method have contributed to the elucidation of mechanis…

Three-Dimensional Surface Display in Blood Pool Gated SPECT

1994

In 14 patients (4 in good health and 10 with coronary heart disease) a blood pool gated single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) was executed. The transaxial slices of the cardiac blood pool were reconstructed. A three-dimensional surface display was employed for the analysis of the tomographic data. A fixed distance, a fixed threshold (50%), and some different planes of view were employed. The test permitted visualiza tion of the ventricular and the atrial movements in all patients. The right ventricle was clearly seen in the right anterior oblique plane of view. The aortic beating was seen. In normal patients the left ventricle, clearly seen in left anterior oblique plane, shra…

A randomized clinical trial to evaluate the plaque removal efficacy of an oscillating-rotating toothbrush versus a sonic toothbrush in orthodontic pa…

2018

ABSTRACT Objective: To compare the plaque removal efficacy of an oscillating-rotating electric toothbrush with an orthodontic brush head versus a sonic toothbrush in adolescent patients with fixed orthodontic appliances. Materials and Methods: This was a randomized, examiner-blind, replicate single-use, two-treatment, four-period, crossover study with a washout period between visits of approximately 24 hours. Forty-four adolescent patients with fixed orthodontic appliances in both arches were randomized based on a computer-generated randomization schedule to one of four toothbrush treatment sequences. The primary outcome was plaque score change from baseline, measured using digital plaque i…

The Efficacy of Powered Oscillating Heads vs. Powered Sonic Action Heads Toothbrushes to Maintain Periodontal and Peri-Implant Health: A Narrative Re…

2021

Objectives: To compare the efficacy of rotating-oscillating heads (ORHs) VS sonic action heads (SAHs) powered toothbrushes on plaque accumulation and gingival inflammation. Methods: An electronic (MEDLINE, Embase, Inspec, PQ SciTech and BIOSIS) and a complementary manual search were made to detect eligible studies. RCTs meeting the following criteria were included: final timepoint longer than 15 days; year of publication after 2000; patients without orthodontic appliances or severe systemic/psychiatric diseases. Studies comparing two or more different types of sonic/roto-oscillating toothbrushes were excluded. Selection of articles, extraction of data, and assessment of quality were made in…

Evidence for the associated production of a W boson and a top quark in ATLAS at √s = 7 TeV

2012

This Letter presents evidence for the associated production of a W boson and a top quark using 2.05 fb[superscript −1] of pp collision data at √s = 7 TeV accumulated with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The analysis is based on the selection of the dileptonic final states with events featuring two isolated leptons, electron or muon, with significant transverse missing momentum and at least one jet. An approach based on boosted decision trees has been developed to improve the discrimination of single top-quark Wt events from background. A template fit to the final classifier distributions is performed to determine the cross-section. The result is incompatible with the background-only hypothes…
