Inflammation, genetics, and longevity: further studies on the protective effects in men of IL-10 -1082 promoter SNP and its interaction with TNF-alph…

2003

Ageing is associated with chronic, low grade inflammatory activity leading to long term tissue damage, and systemic chronic inflammation has been found to be related to mortality risk from all causes in older persons.1 Also, the genetic constitution of the organism interacting with systemic inflammation may cause defined organ specific illnesses. Thus, age related diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease (AD), Parkinson’s disease, atherosclerosis, type 2 diabetes, sarcopenia, and osteoporosis, are initiated or worsened by systemic inflammation, suggesting the critical importance of unregulated systemic inflammation in the shortening of survival in humans.1–3 Accordingly, proinflammatory cytokin…

Exercise with TENS does not augment gains in balance and strength for dancers

2020

Abstract Electrical stimulation modulates sensory feedback and improves motor performance, at least for individuals with compromised sensorimotor function. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of a 4-wk intervention with transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) at improving strength and balance in dancers. Nineteen dancers completed a timed, single-leg balance test, the Y-balance test, and contractions with the hip flexor and knee extensor muscles to assess maximal strength and force steadiness. They completed 4-wks of moderate-intensity bodyweight exercises (3x/wk) and were pseudo-randomized to either a Treatment or Sham group in a single-blind design. The…

Effect of the -420C/G variant of the resistin gene promoter on metabolic syndrome, obesity, myocardial infarction and kidney dysfunction.

2007

. Objective.  Resistin is an adipokine that has been suggested to be correlated with markers of inflammation and to be predictive of coronary atherosclerosis and type II diabetes in humans. A common single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) (−420C/G) in the promoter of resistin is associated with increased resistin plasma levels and susceptibility to type II diabetes. The aim of this study was to investigate the association of the -420C/G polymorphism with metabolic syndrome, obesity, myocardial infarction and kidney disease. Design and results.  First we studied 1542 subjects from the PLIC study (a population based cohort). GG carriers showed an higher prevalence of obesity and metabolic syndro…

Low-energy extracorporeal shock wave therapy for painful heel: a prospective controlled single-blind study.

1996

The aim of this prospective single-blind pilot study was to explore the pain-alleviating effect of low-energy extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) in painful heel associated with inferior calcaneal spurs. Thirty patients who suffered from persistent symptoms for more than 12 months qualified for low-energy ESWT and were assigned at random to two groups, real or simulated ESWT. Before beginning the treatment, any other therapy was stopped for a period of 6 weeks. The shock waves were applied by an experimental device allowing exact localization through an integrated fluoroscopy unit. Patients were treated three times at weekly intervals. Each time 1000 impulses of 0.06 mJ/mm2 were given …

Association of C677T polymorphism in MTHFR gene, high homocysteine and low HDL cholesterol plasma values in heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemi…

2010

Aim: to investigate the association of C677T polymorphism in the methylene tetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) gene, homocysteine plasma values (Hcy), and plasma HDL cholesterol in heterozy-gous familial hypercholesterolemia (hFH).Methods: One hundred and twenty-five hFH subjects were studied. Plasma lipid, lipoprotein, vitamin B12, folic acid and Hcy values were determined. C677T polymorphism in the MTHFR gene was detected by SSCP-PCR. Genetic diagnosis of FH was determined by a three-step protocol using SSCP-PCR, Southern blot, long PCR and automatic sequencing. Results: We found significant differences in plasma HDL-C (CC 1.39±0.34, CT 1.33±0.39 and TT 1.14±0.26 mmol/L, p=0.028) between th…

Thyroid hormone receptor alpha gene variants increase the risk of developing obesity and show gene-diet interactions.

2013

Thyroid hormone receptor-beta resistance has been associated with metabolic traits. THRA gene sequencing of an obese woman (index case) who presented as empirical thyroid hormone receptor-α (THRA) resistance, disclosed a polymorphism (rs12939700) in a critical region involved in TRα alternative processing.THRA gene variants were evaluated in three independent europid populations (i) in two population cohorts at baseline (n=3417 and n=2265), 6 years later (n=2139) and (ii) in 4734 high cardiovascular risk subjects (HCVR, PREDIMED trial). The minor allele of the index case polymorphism (rs12939700), despite having a very low frequency (4%), was significantly associated with higher body mass in…

Methionine synthase reductase (MTRR) A66G polymorphism is not related to plasma homocysteine concentration and the risk for vascular disease.

2009

Epidemiological evidence has revealed that hyperhomocysteinemia increases the risk for vascular disease. Methionine Synthase Reductase (MTRR) is one of several key enzymes in the homocysteine metabolic pathway and its mutant forms have been implicated in abnormal homocysteine accumulation. In this study, we determined total plasma homocysteine levels and MTRR A66G polymorphism in 114 patients with vascular disease: 58 patients with deep-vein thrombosis, 56 patients with arterial thrombosis, and 95 healthy subjects from the Sicilian population. Our data confirmed that, as already reported, moderately elevated t-Hcy levels are correlated with an increased risk of vascular disease. In our stud…

Association of selected ABC gene family single nucleotide polymorphisms with postprandial lipoproteins: results from the population-based Hortega stu…

2009

The aim of the study was to determine the influence of twenty single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the ABCA1, ABCG1, ABCG5 and ABCG8 genes on the plasmatic concentrations of total cholesterol (TC), HDL and LDL cholesterol (HDLc, LDLc) in the postprandial state with a representative Spanish Caucasian population (1473 individuals, 50.0% women, ages ranging 21-85 years). In men, subjects with the AA genotype of the ABCA1 rs2230806 (R219K) polymorphism were associated with increased plasma LDLc levels, while the ABCA1 haplotype, which included the rs2230806 A allele, was associated with higher TC and LDLc plasma concentrations. In women, significant relationships were found between rs18935…

Hypo-fractionated stereotactic radiation therapy for lung malignancies by means of helical tomotherapy: report of feasibility by a single-center expe…

2018

Background: Several experiences in the literature report SBRT as an effective treatment option for medically inoperable early stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and oligometastatic disease. The optimal fractionation schedules and total dose remain controversial. In this study, we evaluated the safety in terms of toxicity and efficacy of using of 8–10 fractions schedules with Helical Tomotherapy (HT) for primary and metastatic lung lesions. Methods: Between March 2014 and May 2016, a total of 39 patients (median age 72 years, range 26–91) were treated with HT-SBRT for malignant lung lesions: 22 patients with early stage NSCLC, 17 with oligometastases. Patients received 8–10 fract…
