Some evolution equations arising in physics

In this paper we consider a new series of evolution equations generalizing the Korteweg-deVries (KdV) and Burgers equations, and we report recent advances on these equations together with the physical phenomena where they arise. In particular we consider a generalized Burgers' equation and we sketch a method for solution in series by using the theory of Sobolevskij and Tanabe. Then we study the KdV equation with nonuniformity terms and we describe various physical interpretation of this equation. We consider various particular cases in which varying solitonic solutions exist. Also we sketch a unicity theorem. Finally modified Burgers-KdV equations are considered.

A brief sketch is made of the present observational status of neutrino physics, with emphasis on the hints that follow from solar and atmospheric neutrino observations, as well as cosmological data on the amplitude of primordial density fluctuations. I also briefly review the ways to account for the observed anomalies and some of their implications.

Visual Imagery, Mental Models, and Reasoning

Abstract: The focus of this paper is the relation between Steven Kosslyn’s visual mental images and Johnson-Laird’s mental models. Knauff et al. presented empirical evidence and a challenging argument for the hypothesis that in fact “visual imagery impedes reasoning.” I argue that these results may look embarrassing for pictorialists, but closer inspection suggests that they are actually harmless. I argue that the presented evidence fails to show that imagery impedes reasoning. I present some objections to the explanation proposed by Knauff and Johnson-Laird by pointing out some terminological and conceptual problems. Classification of Stable Germs by Their Local Algebras

2020

We prove Mather’s theorem that stable germs are classified up to \(\mathscr {A}\)-equivalence by their local algebras. We sketch his calculation of the nice dimensions, together with his classification of stable germs in the nice dimensions, and prove that in the nice dimensions every stable germ is quasi-homogeneous with respect to suitable coordinates.

Quantitative methods in tourism and hospitality: a perspective article

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of past perspectives and future trends in tourism and hospitality research. Design/methodology/approach The study grounds the discussion on the timeline evolution of quantitative research methods. Findings Although still under-recognized by scholars, mixed methods represent the future of research in tourism and hospitality. Research limitations/implications The investigation is confined to quantitative methods. Originality/value No other surveys sketch a period of 150 years of quantitative analyses in tourism and hospitality.

Embodied sound design

Abstract Embodied sound design is a process of sound creation that involves the designer’s vocal apparatus and gestures. The possibilities of vocal sketching were investigated by means of an art installation. An artist–designer interpreted several vocal self-portraits and rendered the corresponding synthetic sketches by using physics-based and concatenative sound synthesis. Both synthesis techniques afforded a broad range of artificial sound objects, from concrete to abstract, all derived from natural vocalisations. Corpus Analysis and Register Variation: a field in need of an update

Abstract This study reviews the development of research on register variation (RV) over the last century to the present, emphasizing the influence of corpus analyses on its greatest advances and also on its major weaknesses and ambiguities. In search of practical and useful methods to analyse language registers, in the second part of the paper, the authors sketch a different approach to RV which has been used over the last ten years in language teaching at university level and professional communication training.

Remarks on Infinite-Dimensional Representations of the Heisenberg Algebra

Infinite-dimensional representations of Lie algebras necessarily invoke the theory of unbounded operator algebras. Starting with the familiar example of the Heisenberg Lie algebra, we sketch the essential features of this interaction, distinguishing in particular the cases of integrable and nonintegrable representations. While integrable representations are well understood, nonintegrable representations are quite mysterious objects. We present here a short and didactical-minded overview of the subject.
