In this paper, we present a method for automated estimation of a human face given a skull remain. Our proposed method is based on three statistical models. A volumetric (tetrahedral) skull model encoding the variations of different skulls, a surface head model encoding the head variations, and a dense statistic of facial soft tissue thickness (FSTT). All data are automatically derived from computed tomography (CT) head scans and optical face scans. The Gravettian occipital bone from the site of Malladetes (Barx, Valencia, Spain)

Abstract The juvenile occipital bone from the site of Malladetes in Valencia (Spain) is described and compared with other European Pleistocene representatives of the genus Homo . This specimen derives from a Gravettian cultural context and has been AMS radiocarbon-dated to 25,120±240 years bp . As such, it provides evidence on early modern human anatomy from the Central Mediterranean region of the Iberian peninsula. Landmark identification on direct digital versus film-based cephalometric radiographs: A human skull study

The purpose of this study was to investigate differences in landmark identification on vertically scanned, direct digital and conventional (18 x 24 cm) cephalometric radiographs. Eight observers, all orthodontists or postgraduate orthodontic students, recorded 6 landmarks twice on 3 digital and 3 conventional cephalograms obtained from 3 human skulls in a standardized fashion. Introduction A technique to localize a radiological target on the head convexity fast and with acceptable precision is sufficient for surgeries of superficial intracranial lesions, and of help in the setting of emergency surgery, computer navigation breakdown, limited resources and education. Taking as its starting point the often postulated criticism of Pont's Index, the intent of the study was to develop a diagnostic procedure which took into consideration the objection that the Pont Index doesn't take the shape of the patient's skull into consideration. On the basis of the data obtained from the models and anthropological measurements of 50 adult subjects with fairly eugnathic dentition, the first step was to follow Pont and study which skull size exhibited the highest correlation to the posterior dental arch. Correlation coefficients in human skulls: Significant sexual differences

This study of 500 male and female skulls proves: significant differences of correlation coefficients (p less than or equal to 0.01) occur between the two sexes. The combined variables are: 1. bizygomatic breadth (45)/skull base length (5) 2. bizygomatic breadth (45)/foramen magnum length (7) 3. bizygomatic breadth (45)/foramen magnum breadth (16) 4. bizygomatic breadth (45)/basion-bregma height (17) 5. foramen magnum breadth (16)/skull base length (5) Female skulls have generally higher correlation coefficients values than males which is interpreted as an indication of homogeneous growth.

Death by Facial and Skull Injuries of a Motorcyclist Wearing a Full-Face Helmet: Case Report and Literature Review

We describe a case of death by facial and skull fractures with brain injuries of a motorcyclist wearing a full-face helmet. A 40-year-old man driving a high-powered motorcycle crashed violently into the rear of a stopped car. The main results from the autopsy revealed the deformation of the left orbito-zygomatic and fronto-temporoparietal regions corresponding to bone fractures with laceration at the left temporal lobe. The CT scan of the helmet revealed the detachment of the energy-absorbing liner. Moreover an impact speed of 93 Km/h resulted from the analysis of accident dynamics. Theoretical morphology of tetrapod skull networks

Abstract Network models of the tetrapod skull in which nodes represent bones and links represent sutures have recently offered new insights into the structural constraints underlying the evolutionary reduction of bone number in the tetrapod skull, known as Williston's Law. Here, we have built null network model-derived generative morphospaces of the tetrapod skull using random, preferential attachment, and geometric proximity growth rules.
