Correlation between relative sunshine and state of the sky

1981

Abstract It is possible to construct a sunshine map referring to a large zone, lacking in a widespread network of recording stations, correlating the relative sunshine with the “state of the sky”, defined by the monthly mean number of the clear, mixed and overcast days, whose data are more largely available. In the correlation here proposed climatological and meteorological factors are introduced in order to express the helioclimatic characteristics of every location. The application to Italy, using the data of the period 1973–1977 provided by the 31 stations of ITAV, has suggested the classification of these stations in seven “helioclimatic groups” characterized by different values of the …

Application of alternating projection method to ensure feasibility of shadowing cross-correlation models

2007

A novel procedure based on the alternating projection method to adjust experimental shadowing cross-correlation (SCC) matrices is proposed. Given an SCC matrix derived from any experimental model, this procedure finds the nearest diagonalisable correlation matrix. This adjustment allows a proper simulation of shadowing samples, since it produces correlation matrices for which Cholesky factorisation is feasible. Simulation results using this procedure for three different SCC models are compared and discussed.

The transient gravitational-wave sky

2013

Interferometric detectors will very soon give us an unprecedented view of the gravitational-wave sky, and in particular of the explosive and transient Universe. Now is the time to challenge our theoretical understanding of short-duration gravitational-wave signatures from cataclysmic events, their connection to more traditional electromagnetic and particle astrophysics, and the data analysis techniques that will make the observations a reality. This paper summarizes the state of the art, future science opportunities, and current challenges in understanding gravitational-wave transients.

Can we measure the neutrino mass hierarchy in the sky?

2010

Cosmological probes are steadily reducing the total neutrino mass window, resulting in constraints on the neutrino-mass degeneracy as the most significant outcome. In this work we explore the discovery potential of cosmological probes to constrain the neutrino hierarchy, and point out some subtleties that could yield spurious claims of detection. This has an important implication for next generation of double beta decay experiments, that will be able to achieve a positive signal in the case of degenerate or inverted hierarchy of Majorana neutrinos. We find that cosmological experiments that nearly cover the whole sky could in principle distinguish the neutrino hierarchy by yielding 'substan…

Spin-orbit-torque-induced skyrmion dynamics for different types of spin-orbit coupling

2018

Abstract We investigate current-induced skyrmion dynamics in the presence of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and spin-orbit spin-transfer torque corresponding to various types of spin-orbit coupling. We determine the symmetries of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and spin-orbit spin-transfer torque based on linear spin-orbit coupling model. We find that like interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (Rashba spin-orbit coupling) and bulk Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (Weyl spin-orbit coupling), Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling also has a possibility for stabilizing skyrmion and current-induced skyrmion dynamics.

Attitude estimation from polarimetric cameras

2018

International audience; In the robotic field, navigation and path planning applications benefit from a wide range of visual systems (e.g. perspective cameras, depth cameras, catadioptric cameras, etc.). In outdoor conditions, these systems capture information in which sky regions cover a major segment of the images acquired. However, sky regions are discarded and are not considered as visual cue in vision applications. In this paper, we propose to estimate attitude of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) from sky information using a polarimetric camera. Theoretically , we provide a framework estimating the attitude from the skylight polarized patterns. We showcase this formulation on both simulate…

Quantum gravity with THESEUS

2021

AbstractIn this paper we explore the possibility to search for a dispersion law for light propagation in vacuo with a sample of Gamma-Ray Bursts detected by the THESEUS satellite. Within Quantum Gravity theories, different models for space-time quantization predict relative discrepancies of the speed of photons w.r.t. the speed of light that (in a series expansion) depend on a given power of the ratio of the photon energy to the Planck energy. This ratio is as small as 10− 23 for photons in the soft γ −ray band (100 keV). The dominant effect is determined by the first significant term of this expansion. If the first order in this expansion is relevant, these theories imply a Lorentz Invaria…

2020

HERMES-TP/SP (High Energy Rapid Modular Ensemble of Satellites Technologic and Scientific Pathfinder) is a constellation of six 3U nano-satellites hosting simple but innovative X-ray detectors, characterized by a large energy band and excellent temporal resolution, and thus optimized for the monitoring of Cosmic High Energy transients such as Gamma Ray Bursts and the electromagnetic counterparts of Gravitational Wave Events, and for the determination of their positions. The projects are funded by the Italian Ministry of University and Research and by the Italian Space Agency, and by the European Union Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Program under Grant Agreement No. 821896.
