Spin eigenexcitations of an antiferromagnetic skyrmion

We theoretically predict and classify the localized modes of a skyrmion in a collinear uniaxial antiferromagnet and discuss how they can be excited. As a central result, we find two branches of skyrmion eigenmodes with distinct physical properties characterized by being low or high energy excitations. The frequency dependence of the low-energy modes scales as $R_0^{-2}$ for skyrmions with large radius $R_0$. Furthermore, we predict localized high-energy eigenmodes, which have no direct ferromagnetic counterpart. Spatial recurrence strategies reveal different routes to Turing pattern formation in chemical systems

We analyze the temporal evolution of hexagonal Turing patterns in two Belousov–Zhabotinsky reactions performed in water-in-oil reverse micro-emulsions under different experimental conditions. The two reactions show different routes to pattern formation through localized spots and through a self replication mechanism. The Generalized Recurrence Plot (GRP) and the Generalized Recurrence Quantification Analysis (GRQA) are used for the investigation of spatial patterns and clearly reveal the different routes leading to the formation of stationary Turing structures.

Lens Effect and CMB Anisotropies: Deviations from Gaussianity

The CMB sky can be seen as the superimposition of two components, one of them is the temperature distribution in the absence of lensing and the other one is the correction caused by lensing. In the model under consideration, the first of these components is Gaussian, but the second is not. Numerical methods to calculate angular correlations in the lens component are designed and tested. Some of these correlations are estimated. Deviations from Gaussianity are confirmed.

Characterizing breathing dynamics of magnetic skyrmions and antiskyrmions within the Hamiltonian formalism

We derive an effective Hamiltonian system describing the low-energy dynamics of circular magnetic skyrmions and antiskyrmions. Using scaling and symmetry arguments, we model (anti)skyrmion dynamics through a finite set of coupled, canonically conjugated, collective coordinates. The resulting theoretical description is independent of both micromagnetic details as well as any specificity in the ansatz of the skyrmion profile. Based on the Hamiltonian structure, we derive a general description for breathing dynamics of (anti)skyrmions in the limit of radius much larger than the domain wall width. Solar radiation extinction, sky radiation, sky light polarization and aerosol particle total number and size distribution on the Island Maui (Hawaii)

During April 1964 and from August through September 1965 measurements have been performed on the Maui Island, Hawaii. The results can be summarized as follows: a) the spectral extinction coefficient has a diurnal variation. The greatest value is found during noon. Its wavelength dependency shows an ‘anomalous extinction’, the maximum of extinction is to be found at 0.55 μ (Figures 1–3). b) the spectral radiance distribution of the total sky indicates the tendency that the aerosol size distribution does not follow a continuous power law. A sample of weak blazars at milli-arcsecond resolution

We started a follow-up investigation of the Deep X-ray Radio Blazar Survey objects with declination >-10 deg. We undertook a survey with the EVN at 5GHz to make the first images of a complete sample of weak blazars, aiming at a comparison between high- and low-power samples of blazars. All of the 87 sources observed were detected. Point-like sources are found in 39 cases, and 48 show core-jet structure. According to the spectral indices previously obtained, 58 sources show a flat spectral index, and 29 sources show a steep spectrum or a spectrum peaking at a frequency around 1-2 GHz. Swift-BAT hard X-ray sky monitoring unveils the orbital period of the HMXB IGR J18219-1347

IGR J18219-1347 is a hard X-ray source discovered by INTEGRAL in 2010. We have analyzed the X-ray emission of this source exploiting the BAT survey data up to March 2012 and the XRT data that include also an observing campaign performed in early 2012. The source is detected at a significance level of ~14 standard deviations in the 88-month BAT survey data, and shows a strong variability along the survey monitoring, going from high intensity to quiescent states. A timing analysis on the BAT data revealed an intensity modulation with a period of 72.46 days. The significance of this modulation is about 7 standard deviations in Gaussian statistics. Discovery of periodic dips in the light curve of GX 13+1: the X-ray orbital ephemeris of the source

The bright low-mass X-ray binary (LMXB) GX 13+1 is one of the most peculiar Galactic binary systems. A periodicity of 24.27 d with a formal statistical error of 0.03 d was observed in its power spectrum density obtained with RXTE All Sky Monitor (ASM) data spanning 14 years. Starting from a recent study, indicating GX 13+1 as a possible dipping source candidate, we systematically searched for periodic dips in the X-ray light curves of GX 13+1 from 1996 up to 2013 using RXTE/ASM, and MAXI data to determine for the first time the X-ray orbital ephemeris of GX 13+1.
