Estimate of the gravitational-wave background from the observed cosmological distribution of quasars

We study the gravitational-wave background from the observed cosmological quasar distribution. Using the DR9Q quasar catalogue from the ninth data release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), we create a complete, statistically consistent sample of quasars from $z=0.3$ to $5.4$. Employing the spectroscopic information from the catalogue we estimate the masses of the supermassive black holes hosted by the quasars in the sample, resulting in a log-normal distribution of mean $10^{8.32\pm0.33}M_{\odot}$. Teleportation of atomic states via position measurements

We present a scheme for conditionally teleporting an unknown atomic state in cavity QED, which requires two atoms and one cavity mode. The translational degrees of freedom of the atoms are taken into account using the optical Stern-Gerlach model. We show that successful teleportation with probability 1/2 can be achieved through local measurements of the cavity photon number and atomic positions. Neither direct projection onto highly entangled states nor holonomous interaction-time constraints are required.
Calibration of Cholesky Auxiliary Basis Sets for Multiconfigurational Perturbation Theory Calculations of Excitation Energies

The accuracy of auxiliary basis sets derived from Cholesky decomposition of two-electron integrals is assessed for excitation energies calculated at the state-average complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) and multiconfigurational second order perturbation theory (CASPT2) levels of theory using segmented as well as generally contracted atomic orbital basis sets. Based on 196 valence excitations in 26 organic molecules and 72 Rydberg excitations in 3 organic molecules, the results show that Cholesky auxiliary basis sets can be used without compromising the accuracy of the multiconfigurational methods. The satellite for X-ray astronomy SAX, to be launched at the end of 1993, is devoted to systematic, integrated and comprehensive, studies of galactic and extra-galactic sources in the energy band 0.1–200 keV, and is under joint development by the Italian Space Agency (ASI) and the Netherlands Agency for Aerospace programs (NIVR), with the participation of SRU/SRON and SSD/ESTEC. Nuclear Energy Density Optimization: UNEDF2

The parameters of the UNEDF2 nuclear energy density functional (EDF) model were obtained in an optimization to experimental data consisting of nuclear binding energies, proton radii, odd-even mass staggering data, fission-isomer excitation energies, and single particle energies. In addition to parameter optimization, sensitivity analysis was done to obtain parameter uncertainties and correlations. The resulting UNEDF2 is an all-around EDF. However, the sensitivity analysis also demonstrated that the limits of current Skyrme-like EDFs have been reached and that novel approaches are called for.

A physical explanation of the intensity and polarization of diffusion skylight in the plane of the sun’s vertical is attempted by an approximation method which takes into account the effects of multiple scattering. Various model atmospheres are considered. The scattered radiation field is assumed to be composed of (1) the scattered radiation due to the molecular atmosphere resulting from all orders of scattering; (2) the scattered radiation due to the turbid atmosphere including primary scattering only; and (3) the scattered radiation due to the turbid atmosphere resulting from secondary and higher-order scattering. Particular attention is paid to the question of extrapolation of the characteristic curve for the region of the weakest stars in the absence of standards. Polarizabilities of small annulenes from Cholesky CC2 linear response theory

Using recently developed algorithms based on Cholesky decomposition of two-electron integrals to compute response properties at the correlated level, the static and dynamic (at 589 nm) polarizabilities of [4n + 2]-annulenes (n = 1, 2, 3, 4) have been calculated. The results show that the perpendicular component increases along the series linearly with the number of double bonds. The in-plane static polarizability is also increasing linearly with the area of the aromatic ring in the case of the delocalized species. However, linearity is lost for the localized conformations and for the dynamic polarizability. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Context: The comparison of observed counts in a given sky direction with predictions by Galactic models yields constraints to the spatial distribution and the stellar birthrate of young stellar populations. In this work we present the results of the analysis of the stellar content of the XMM-Newton Bright Serendipitous Survey (XBSS). This unbiased survey includes a total of 58 stellar sources selected in the 0.5 -- 4.5 keV energy band, having a limiting sensitivity of $10^{-2}$ cnt s$^{-1}$ and covering an area of 28.10 sq. deg. The correlation function of the distribution of matter in the universe shows, at large scales, baryon acoustic oscillations, which were imprinted prior to recombination. This feature was first detected in the correlation function of the luminous red galaxies (LRG) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The final release (DR7) of the SDSS has been recently made available, and the useful volume is about two times bigger than in the old sample.
