What did Stanislavsky see watching Eleonora Duse's Acting

2013

Performances like those Eleonora Duse’s led James Joyce to comment that the Italians had an immense genius for the theatre. He said that on stage, they were undoubtedly the greatest actors in existence. What is more, Stanislavsky was so inspired by Eleonora Duse’s acting that he formed his system, with the aim of matching her absorbing and exquisitely sympathetic acting. In particular, Stanislavsky was profoundly attracted by the simplicity of her acting. But it did not emerge from a natural status or attitude, as many have believed. As we now know that it came from the perfect execution of the drammatica.

On Association Models Defined over Independence Graphs

1998

Conditions on joint distributions are given under which two variables will be conditionally associated whenever an independence graph does not imply a corresponding conditional independence statement. To this end the notions of parametric cancellation, of stable paths and of quasi-linear models are discussed in some detail.

Uncertainty in 2-point correlation function estimators and baryon acoustic oscillation detection in galaxy surveys

2012

Abstract We study the uncertainty in different two-point correlation function (2PCF) estimators in currently available galaxy surveys. This is motivated by the active subject of using the baryon acoustic oscillations (BAOs) feature in the correlation function as a tool to constrain cosmological parameters, which requires a fine analysis of the statistical significance. We discuss how estimators are affected by both the uncertainty in the mean density n and the integral constraint 1 V 2 ∫ V 2 ξ ˆ ( r ) d 3 r = 0 which necessarily causes a bias. We quantify both effects for currently available galaxy samples using simulated mock catalogues of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) following a lo…

Dynamics of Pattern Formation in Biomimetic Systems

2008

This paper is an attempt to conceptualize pattern formation in self-organizing systems and, in particular, to understand how structures, oscillations or waves arise in a steady and homogenous environment, a phenomenon called symmetry breaking. The route followed to develop these ideas was to couple chemical oscillations produced by Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction with confined reaction environments, the latter being an essential requirement for any process of Life. Special focus was placed on systems showing organic or lipidic compartments, which represent more reliable biomimetic matrices.

Einstein-Smoluchowsky equation handled by complex fractional moments

2014

In this paper the response of a non linear half oscillator driven by α-stable white noise in terms of probability density function (PDF) is investigated. The evolution of the PDF of such a system is ruled by the so called Einstein-Smoluchowsky equation involving, in the diffusive term, the Riesz fractional derivative. The solution is obtained by the use of complex fractional moments of the PDF, calculated with the aid of Mellin transform operator. It is shown that solution can be found for various values of stability index α and for any nonlinear function of the drift term in the stochastic differential equation.

In viaggio con Stravinsky, gli ultimi anni di tournée e le "Choral-Variationen" sul canto natalizio Vom Himme hoch..." (1955-56)

2022

The text takes up in organic form the speeches held on June 3, 2021 as part of the conference "Stravinsky in/and Italy. Day dedicated to the memory of Igor Stravinsky in the fiftieth anniversary of his death (1971-2021)" and the subsequent round table. The first paragraphs have the character of a reconstruction of the life of Igor Stravinsky ‘as an old man’, dealing above all with the theme of the trips to Italy made by the Maestro together with his wife Vera de Bosset, the conductor Robert Craft. The second part of the text is about the "Choral-Variationen on the Christmas carol “Vom Himmel hoch...”, written in 1955-56 to be performed with the Canticum Sacrum in the St. Mark’s Basilica in …

Asukasosallisuus alueiden kehittämisessä : näennäisestä rituaalista jatkuvaan vuorovaikutukseen

2022

Extreme overirradiance events in Norway: 1.6 suns measured close to 60°N

2015

Abstract We report the most extreme overirradiance event of 1.6 kW/m 2 measured so far in Grimstad, southern Norway (latitude 58°20′), at altitude of only about 60 m a.s.l. Images of the sky conditions taken with a wide-dynamic-range camera suggest that this is not the ultimate value for our location, but that extremes as high as 1.7 kW/m 2 may be possible. The phenomenon was caused by strong forward scattering of sunlight within 3° around the solar disk in thin, broken altocumulus clouds. The normalized spectrum of sunlight during such extreme events is very similar to the normalized clear-sky spectrum measured at Air Mass 1.4 and irradiance of 1.0 kW/m 2 . We suggest that the values excee…
