Abstract The amount and composition of subduction zone fluids and the effect of fluid–rock interaction at a slab–mantle interface have been constrained by thermodynamic and trace element modelling of partially overprinted blueschist-facies rocks from the Sesia Zone (Western Alps). Deformation-induced differences in fluid flux led to a partial preservation of pristine mineral cores in weakly deformed samples that were used to quantify Li, B, Sr and Pb distribution during mineral growth, -breakdown and modification induced by fluid–rock interaction. Multipactor Effect in a Parallel-Plate Waveguide Partially Filled With Magnetized Ferrite

The aim of this paper is the analysis of the multipactor effect in a parallel-plate waveguide when a ferrite slab, transversally magnetized by a static magnetic field parallel to the waveguide walls, is present. Employing an in-house developed code, numerical simulations are performed to predict the multipactor radio frequency voltage threshold in such a ferrite-loaded waveguide. Variations of the ferrite magnetization field strength and the ferrite slab height are analyzed. Effective electron trajectories are also shown for a better understanding of the breakdown phenomenon, finding different multipactor regimes.

Earthquake Excited Base-Isolated Structures Protected by Tuned Liquid Column Dampers: Design Approach and Experimental Verification

Abstract In this contribution a direct approach for optimal design of a Tuned Liquid Column Damper (TLCD) device attached to the base slab of a base-isolated structure is presented, aiming at reducing the seismic displacement demand of the base-isolation subsystem. Assuming white noise base excitation, for a wide parameter range a direct optimization procedure yields design charts for optimal TLCD quantities. Simplified Modeling of Radiant Fields in Heterogeneous Photoreactors. 1. Case of Zero Reflectance

A strongly simplified model is proposed for the estimation of the radiant flow field, and related quantities such as the local volumetric rate of energy absorption, in heterogeneous photoreactors. The model is based on the assumption that a photon carrying energy greater than that of the catalyst band gap, when interacting with a catalyst particle, is invariably absorbed. The model equations allow, for simple geometries, analytical integral solutions to be obtained. Absorbing anisotropic and gyrotropic slab between crossed polarizers in parallel light

When a birefringent slab is rotated between two crossed polarizers, the four maxima and four minima of the transmitted intensity occur, as known, at every π/4 radians. If the slab is also optically active, the maxima and minima are arranged in other patterns that may be grouped according to the number of extrema met in one complete turn of the slab: four or eight. All the possible patterns are classified and each is related to some peculiarity of the complex refractive index of the slab.

Rigorous analysis of three-dimensional beam transmission through a dielectric slab

The plane-wave-spectrum technique is applied to study the transmission of a three-dimensional beam through a dielectric slab. The electromagnetic beam radiated from an aperture antenna is represented by an angular spectrum of plane waves. The use of three different co-ordinate systems using rectangular co-ordinates allows a rigorous formulation to be obtained. The near field transmitted through a dielectric slab is obtained and compared with measurements.

Diffusion of neutrons by a slab of moderating material: an application of the Monte Carlo Method

Heat Conduction Problem for Double-Layered Ball

Heat conduction models for double layered spherical sample are developed. Parabolic (classic, based on Fourier’s Law) and hyperbolic (based on Modified Fourier’s Law) heat conduction equations are used to describe processes in the sample during Intensive Quenching. Solution and numerical results are obtained for 1D model using Conservative Averaging method and transforming the original problem for a sphere to a new problem for a slab, with non classic boundary condition. Models include boundary conditions of third kind and non-linear BC case. Numerical results are presented for several relaxation time and initial heat flux values.

Modeling evolution of the San Andreas Fault system in northern and central California

[1] We present a three-dimensional finite element thermomechanical model idealizing the complex deformation processes associated with evolution of the San Andreas Fault system (SAFS) in northern and central California over the past 20 Myr. More specifically, we investigate the mechanisms responsible for the eastward (landward) migrationof the San Andreas plate boundary over time, a process thathas largely determined the evolution and present structure of SAFS.
