Improvements in aggregate-paste interface by the hydration of steelmaking waste in concretes and mortars
2019
[EN] The objective of the experimental work is to study the mechanical properties in self-compacting concretes (SCC) in which part of the limestone aggregate has been replaced by granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS) in different percentages ranging from 0% to 60%. The results show that at early ages the SCC with the largest content in slag tend to have lower compressive strengths due to the poor compacting of the aggregates, although in the long-term their strength increases due to the reactivity of the slag. In fact, at the age of 365 days, the mortars made with the substitution of 50% of cement by ground GBFS reach compressive strength similar to that of the mortar made with 100% of cemen…
Alkali-Activated Adsorbents from Slags: Column Adsorption and Regeneration Study for Nickel(II) Removal
2021
Alkali-activated adsorbents were synthesized by mixing three different slags from the steel industry: blast furnace slag (BFS), ladle slag (LS), and Lintz–Donawitz converter slag (LD). These powdered slag-based geopolymers (GP) were used to remove nickel(II) from aqueous solutions in fixed-bed column studies. The experiments were conducted in pH 6 using a phosphate buffer with initial nickel(II) concentration of 50 mg/L. Samples were taken at time intervals of between 5 and 90 min. Three adsorption–desorption cycles were implemented with a flow rate of 5 mL/min. The geopolymers were characterized by Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Field Emissi…
Ionic Nitriding of Certain Parts Protected on Nonfunctional Surfaces With Special Paints. Electric Energy Consumed
2021
The experimental researches on the promotion of new technologies for the local protection of metallic parts against plasma nitriding, led to two types of special paints for protection in ionic nitriding, paints elaborated on the basis of copper lamellar powder in combination with magnesium oxide and carbon tetrachloride. In the created context, it was considered that the elaborated paints could be used not only for preventing the hardening during ionic nitriding of certain technological surfaces of the parts on which they are applied, but also for coating certain nonfunctional surfaces, their degasification taking such a long time. These nonfunctional areas could be: surfaces resulted from …
Solidification of ion exchange resins saturated with Na+ ions: Comparison of matrices based on Portland and blast furnace slag cement
2017
International audience; Ion exchange resins (IERs) are widely used by the nuclear industry to decontaminate radioactive effluents. After use, they are usually stabilized and solidified by encapsulation in cementitious materials. However, for certain combinations of cement and resins, the solidified waste forms can exhibit strong expansion, possibly leading to cracking of the matrix. In this work, the behaviour of cationic resins in the Na$^+$ form is investigated in Portland cement (CEM I) or blast furnace slag cement (CEM III/C) pastes at early age in order to have a better understanding of the swelling process. The results show that during the hydration of the CEM I paste, the resins exhi…
Analytical study by SEM/EDX and metallographic techniques of materials used in the iron production process during the iberian period
2002
Abstract This work is the archaeometric study of different types of materials used in iron production in the Iberian Period (6th–2nd century b.c.). The materials were recovered in several archaeological digs (which makes it possible to date the archaeological remains) on different sites in the Levante area of the Iberian Peninsula. The samples selected for this study belong to different materials used in the ancient iron production process such as ores, slags, finished objects, etc. The use of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) is proposed to observe surface images of the samples to determine their morphological, microstructural and topographic characteristics to obtain valuable information…
Hyperbolicity as an obstruction to smoothability for one-dimensional actions
2017
Ghys and Sergiescu proved in the $80$s that Thompson's group $T$, and hence $F$, admits actions by $C^{\infty}$ diffeomorphisms of the circle . They proved that the standard actions of these groups are topologically conjugate to a group of $C^\infty$ diffeomorphisms. Monod defined a family of groups of piecewise projective homeomorphisms, and Lodha-Moore defined finitely presentable groups of piecewise projective homeomorphisms. These groups are of particular interest because they are nonamenable and contain no free subgroup. In contrast to the result of Ghys-Sergiescu, we prove that the groups of Monod and Lodha-Moore are not topologically conjugate to a group of $C^1$ diffeomorphisms. Fur…
Mechanical and environmental performance comparisons of improved asphalt pavement wearing courses with high quality aggregates, steel slags, and poly…
2023
The use of waste materials in the construction of hot mix asphalt (HMA) pavements is an important opportunity for environmental sustainability. When properly designed, the alternative mixtures may also guarantee excellent mechanical performance. In this study, the results of an experimental analysis carried out on dense-graded HMAs are presented. In particular, the performance of a "traditional" surface mixture with limestone aggregate (designed with neat bitumen or a polymer-modified bitumen within the typical acceptance requirements for intended use in wearing courses) was compared with two alternative mixtures. The research investigated a surface mixture including coarse basaltic aggrega…
Etude de l'influence de l'hydratation des laitiers sur les propriétés de transfert gazeux dans les matériaux cimentaires
2015
Cements with high slag content are currently studied as possible candidate for nuclear waste containment materials. In this context it is important to know their microstructure and the transport properties (permeability and diffusion) of the gases that are formed by the radiolysis of the water present in this material. According to literature, these properties are strongly impacted by the addition of blast furnace slag. The aim of this work is to correlate the hydration processes of slag blended cements with their transport properties. In the first part of this work, the hydration of the slag blended cements, for which only few results have been reported to date, has been studied. Silicon-2…
Structure and performance properties of environmentally-friendly biocomposites based on poly(ɛ-caprolactone) modified with copper slag and shale dril…
2018
The potential application of two types of industrial wastes, drill cuttings (DC) and copper slag (CS), as silica-rich modifiers of poly(ɛ-caprolactone) (PCL) was investigated. Chemical structure and physical properties of DC and CS fillers were characterized using X-ray diffractometer, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, particle size and density measurements. PCL/DC and PCL/CS composites with a variable content of filler (5 to 50 parts by weight) were prepared by melt compounding in an internal mixer. It was observed that lower particle size of DC filler enhanced processing of biocomposites comparing to CS filler. Smaller particles of DC filler and thus the higher specific surface area, enabl…
