2015

Different sources (epigrahical, literary, apocryphal) can be used to analyse the Christian heretical sects connected to an enkratite movement (Enkratites, Apotactites, Sakkophoroi, Hydroparastatai, Aerians), which was characterised by radical forms of self-restraint (enkrateia). Epigraphical documents are helpful in setting these communities in the rural background of late antique Anatolia (4th-5th cent. AD). On the other side the apocryphal acts of the apostles – specially the so called Acta Petri from the Codex Vercellensis and the Acta Philippi – offer important hints on social and economic ideas developed by Enkratites, in particular concerning the most debated issues of evangelic pover…

Schiavitù, servitù e sfruttamento lavorativo

2022

2020

On 24 April 1833, Louis Philippe of Orléans signed the law replacing the General Councils with the Colonial Councils. By a circular dated 18 July 1840 from the Minister of the Navy and the Colonies, Special Councils were also established in the four French coloniesin orderto provide documents and opinions on the abolition of slavery. This paper analyses French Guiana, starting from the different composition of the two Councils and, then, from the different interestsrepresented therein. The aim is to reconstruct the debate on slavery conducted between 1840 and 1842 in the two Councils, and, consequently, to highlight and compare the proposalsforsocial and institutional changes they contextua…

Agency or impotence: Sicilian women in the context of captivity.

In this position paper I will put forward a small array of case studies in order to better understand the role of sicilian women in captivity related situations during the XVII-XVIIIXIX centuries, specifically how much gender influenced the practices of mediation, ransom and redemption of slaves. Those case studies constitutes part of my research work, and my aim is to test the conclusions of this paper by further archival research. I will highlight the role of sicilian women not only as captives but also in the mediation for the rescue of their relatives and in the funding of the redeeming missions. Of course, women in those centuries were generally subjugated to the will of their fathers,…

“A Modern Slave Song:” Reggae Music and the Memory of Slavery

2019

International audience; From early ska tunes to modern-day dancehall sounds, Jamaican popular music has been a privileged site for the re/creation and transmission of a communal memory of slavery, within Jamaican society itself but also in the broader context of the African and Afro-Caribbean diasporas. The lyrics of reggae songs constitute a vast textual repertoire where a predominantly oral discourse on slavery is produced and circulated, mostly outside institutional circles. In such texts, slavery serves as a memorial matrix which fosters a sense of identity, community and resistance for Afro-Caribbean people around the world. This chapter examines a corpus of 250 song lyrics dedicated t…

"For beyond this trading community lies family life" : filiation et écriture dans Crossing the River

2016

This paper examines the relationship between filiation, affiliation and writing in Crossing the River. First, it examines the diversity of literary genres incorporated, revisited and juxtaposed in a novel often defined by its polyphonic structure. This analysis leads to a study of the ways in which family ties, and particularly the links between parents and children, are staged in the text through a complex pattern of repetitions and inversions. The echoes which connect, and sometimes oppose, the various parts of the novel suggest that repetition and inversion are the tools through which family identity is constructed throughout the novel. The reason behind these textual strategies may also…

2009

How has the French State been able to maintain slavery for more than fifty years after the Déclaration des droits de l'homme et du citoyen of 1789? The slave was considered, in a legal scope, not as a person but as a « movable », he was considered as an object that could be bought, sold, mutilated and tortured! Abolished for the first time in 1794, reinstated in 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte, slavery would definitively disappear in France only in 1848, thanks to Victor Schoelcher's (1804-1893) decisive action. This great humanist, by a tireless fight, managed to impose an immediate abolition – and not a progressive one as in Britain – showing that if this institution was certainly legal, it wa…
