Closure to “New Theoretical Solution of Stage-Discharge Relationship for Slit Weirs” by Vito Ferro and Ismail Aydin

2018

In this paper, the flow-process of a slit weir was analyzed on the basis of a theorem of dimensional analysis and incomplete self-similarity theory. The theoretically deduced stage-discharge formula then was calibrated using experimental data obtained for a ratio between the weir and the channel width, ranging from 0.05 to 0.25. The deduced stage-discharge relationship allowed measuring discharge values characterized by errors that, for 98% of the measured values, were less than or equal to +/- 5%. The performance of the proposed theoretical stage-discharge formula also was improved by introducing the Reynolds number (for 98.5% of the measured values the error was less than or equal to +/- …

Super-resolution-based magnification of endothelium cells from biomicroscope videos of the cornea

2018

We present a practical, robust, and effective pipeline to compute a high-resolution (HR) image of the corneal endothelium starting from a low-resolution (LR) video sequence obtained with a general purpose slit lamp biomicroscope. An image quality typical of dedicated and more expensive confocal microscopes is achieved via software magnification by exploiting information redundancy in the video sequence. In particular, the HR image is generated from the best LR frames, obtained by identifying the most suitable endothelium video subsequence using a support vector machine-based learning approach, followed by a robust graph-based frame registration. Results on long, real sequences show that the…

La patria in guerra. I romanzi di Elisabeth Werner

2015

This essay examines the works of Elisabeth Werner (Elisabeth Bürstenbinder, 1838-1918) a successful novelist still not fully explored and how she deals in her romantic novels (printed in the magazine for families Die Gartenlaube) with the German wars of the Risorgiment, particularly the Danish and Franco-Prussian wars. This study illustrates how Elisabeth Werner uses these two conflicts to intensify the nationalist sentiments in her German readers. Three romances are analysed: Ein Held der Feder (1872), Sankt Michael and Heimatklang (1877).

Safety of sublingual immunotherapy started during the pollen season

2009

Sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) is safer than subcutaneous immunotherapy (SCIT) and this has lead to the reconsideration of the use of ultra-rush schedules for SLIT. The aim of this study was to assess the safety of ultra-rush SLIT in pollen-allergic children according to different timing of administration in relation to the pollen season. In total, 34 children with pollen-induced rhinitis and 36 with pollen-induced asthma and rhinitis, were enrolled and assigned to three study groups: group 1 (n = 17 patients): conventional pre-seasonal-SLIT treatment; group 2 (n = 23 patients), seasonal SLIT ended before the pollen seasonal peak; group 3 (n = 30 patients), SLIT began after the pollen seaso…

2011

This clinical case report describes the clinical findings and diagnosis of lacrimal gland adenocarcinoma that developed 20 years after external beam radiotherapy in the treatment of bilateral retinoblastoma. Visual acuity, slit lamp biomicroscopy, fundus color photography, nuclear magnetic resonance, lateral orbitotomy and histological analysis are described.

Grand Canonical Monte Carlo Simulations to Determine the Optimal Interlayer Distance of a Graphene Slit-Shaped Pore for Adsorption of Methane, Hydrog…

2021

The adsorption—for separation, storage and transportation—of methane, hydrogen and their mixture is important for a sustainable energy consumption in present-day society. Graphene derivatives have proven to be very promising for such an application, yet for a good design a better understanding of the optimal pore size is needed. In this work, grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations, employing Improved Lennard–Jones potentials, are performed to determine the ideal interlayer distance for a slit-shaped graphene pore in a large pressure range. A detailed study of the adsorption behavior of methane, hydrogen and their equimolar mixture in different sizes of graphene pores is obtained through ca…

Ergonyms of Educational and Cultural spheres in two of Baltic States cities

2020

Daugavpils (Latvia) and Narva (Estonia) are cities in the Baltic States and signifi cant cultural and economic centres of their respective countries. These cities are characterized by a minority of nationals (19.8% of residents of Daugavpils are Latvian, 4% of residents of Narva are Estonian) and a similar linguistic situation: there is a dominance of Russian in the press, television and radio, but the state language prevails in the urban language signs. The aim of the study is to analyse the linguistic and extralinguistic means used for the creation of ergonyms of educational and cultural spheres. The main criteria for the analysis are: language choice, grammatical structures, sources of pr…

In-process material characterization at constant extrusion conditions: application to clay/PLA bionanocomposites

2017

The authors developed a prototype modular small-scale single / twin-screw extrusion system, with outputs in the range of grams/hour, coupled to a rheo-optical slit die. This experimental set-up is adequate to measure shear viscosity and normal-stress differences and perform optical measurements

Contextuality Analysis of the Double Slit Experiment (with a Glimpse into Three Slits)

2018

The Contextuality-by-Default theory is illustrated on contextuality analysis of the idealized double-slit experiment. The experiment is described by a system of contextually labeled binary random variables each of which answers the question: Has the particle hit the detector, having passed through a given slit (left or right) in a given state (open or closed)? This system of random variables is a cyclic system of rank 4, formally the same as the system describing the Einsten-Podolsky-Rosen-Bell paradigm with signaling. Unlike the latter, however, the system describing the double-slit experiment is always noncontextual, i.e., the context-dependence in it is entirely explainable in terms of d…
