Fate of organic pollutants after sewage sludge spreading on agricultural soils: a 30-years field-scale recording

2006

Le DOI mentionné dans l'article 10.2166/WPT.2007.008 ne fonctionne pas; International audience; Toxic organic compounds, such as the surfactants linear alkylbenzene sulfonates (LAS) and nonylphenol polyethoxylates (NPE), Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and residues derived from plastics (PAE-phthalates) end up in sewage sludge. In order to evaluate and quantify the potential environmental risks associated with the xenobiotic introduction into biological life cycle, the EU BIOWASTE project (QLK5-CT-2002-01138) devotes one task to the study of the fate of xenobiotic in a sandy soil after sludge spreading on a 30-year field-scale record experiment. Optical Monitoring of Microplastics Filtrated from Wastewater Sludge and Suspended in Ethanol.

2021

The abundance of microplastics (MPs) in the atmosphere, on land, and especially in water bodies is well acknowledged. In this study, we establish an optical method based on three different techniques, namely, specular reflection to probe the medium, transmission spectroscopy measurements for the detection and identification, and a speckle pattern for monitoring the sedimentation of MPs filtrated from wastewater sludge and suspended in ethanol. We used first Raman measurements to estimate the presence and types of different MPs in wastewater sludge samples. We also used microscopy to identify the shapes of the main MPs. This allowed us to create a teaching set of samples to be characterized …

Complete genome sequence of the methanogenic neotype strain Methanobacterium formicicum MF(T.).

2014

The neotype strain Methanobacterium formicicum MFT (DSM1535), a hydrogenotrophic methanogenic Archaeon, was isolated from a domestic sewage sludge digestor in Urbana (IL, USA). Here, the complete genome sequence of the methanogen is reported. The genome is 2,478,074 bp in size, featuring a GC content of 41.23%. M. formicicum MFT encodes several genes predicted to be involved in adaptation to abiotic stress such as high osmolarity. The strain MFT is of biotechnological importance since M. formicicum strains are often found in production-scale biogas plants and it is suggested as a starter culture for the anaerobic biomethanation process. Use of Fe and Al containing electrocoagulation sludge as an adsorbent and a catalyst in water treatment

2023

In this study, three different electrocoagulation (EC) sludges were studied as an adsorbent (removal of humic acids) and as a catalyst [catalytic wet peroxide oxidation (CWPO) of bisphenol A (BPA)]. The sludges originated from electrocoagulation process in which aluminum (Al) and iron (Fe) electrodes were used for the treatment of mining industry wastewater. All the materials were used as dried sludge and calcined material. The stability of these materials was studied in neutral and alkaline conditions with analysis of the leached iron content in solution. Based on the EC sludge characterization with X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), and diffuse-reflectance infrared Four…

Catalytic hydrothermal liquefaction of municipal sludge in subcritical water

2021

In the last decades, the dwindling of the fossil sources of energy coupled with the growth of energy demand and of waste production prompted the research in developing novel industrial technologies for renewable energy production and waste valorization. Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) is a good alternative to transform wet biomasses as microalgae, macroalgae, agricultural residues, food waste, and municipal sludge (MS) into value-added products with high efficiency and decreasing the amounts that has to be disposed of. HTL takes place in an aqueous environment, without the energy cost of drying the biomass, at 300-400°C and pressure of 10-40 MPa [1,2]. At these operative conditions, an inte…

Effect of temperature on anaerobic treatment of black water in UASB-septic tank systems

2007

The effect of northern European seasonal temperature changes and low temperature on the performance of upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB)-septic tanks treating black water was studied. Three UASB-septic tanks were monitored with different operational parameters and at different temperatures. The results indicated the feasibility of the UASB-septic tank for (pre)treatment of black water at low temperatures with respect to removal of suspended solids and dissolved organic material. Inoculum sludge had little effect on COD(ss) removal, though in the start-up phase some poorly adapted inoculum disintegrated and washed out, thus requiring consideration when designing the process. Removal of …

Particle balance and return loops for microplastics in a tertiary-level wastewater treatment plant.

2021

Highlights: Dewatering by centrifugation was a step that removed a high number of MPs from the sludge. Sludge retained especially the fibrous microplactics. Reject water transported microplastics inside a wastewater treatment plant. Disc filter-based tertiary treatment ensured removal of 99% of microplastics in wastewater. Microplastics (MPs) from households, stormwater, and various industries are transported to wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), where a high proportion of them are captured before discharging their residuals to watersheds. Although recent studies have indicated that the removed MPs are mainly retained in wastewater sludge, sludge treatment processes have gained less atten…

Biopolymer Recovery from Aerobic Granular Sludge and Conventional Flocculent Sludge in Treating Industrial Wastewater: Preliminary Analysis of Differ…

2022

The recovery of biopolymers from sewage sludge could be a crucial step in implementing circular economy principles in wastewater treatment plants (WWTP). In this frame, the present study was aimed at evaluating the simultaneous production of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) obtainable from the treatment of agro-industrial wastewater. Two biological enrichment systems, aerobic granular sludge (AGS) and a conventional activated sludge operating as a sequencing batch reactor (SBR), were monitored for 204 and 186 days, respectively. The maximum biopolymers accumulation capacity was close to 0.60 mgPHA-EPS gVSS−1 in the AGS when operating at 3 kgCODm…

Wpływ nawożenia mineralnego oraz zastosowania osadów ściekowych na wybrane właściwości zwałowisk po eksploatacji wapieni

2006

The study, conducted in years 1998-2002, was aimed to define the optimal way of land reclamation and development o f the area of the opencast limestone mine by low-cost methods of proved efficiency. Four experimental plots, differ in respect of the soil fertilization method, were assigned within the area of the Silesian Lime Industry Works in Tarnów Opolski. Results o f physical and chemical analyses revealed that the use o f sewage sludge was not dangerous for soil properties and plants. Its uniform application on the whole land surface was more favorable than the point application by the hole treatment.
