Mobile Encounter Networks and Their Applications

2008

This article presents mobile encounter networks (MENs), which emerge when mobile devices come across each other and form a temporary connection between them using a common short-range radio technology. Local information exchanges between mobile devices results in a broadcast diffusion of information to other users of the network with a delay. Gasoline price comparison system (GPCS), which delivers newest gasoline prices to mobile users using mobile encounter information diffusion, is described as well as other application areas where MENs could be used. The feasibility of building MENs using bluetooth is tested with the BlueCheese mobile encounter network middleware and it is found that the…

IMMUNO-ONCOLOGICAL TREATMENT OF NON-SMALL-CELL LUNG CANCER IN ADVANCED STAGE WITH NIVOLUMAB

2021

In recent years, significant scientific progress has been made in the therapy of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC),which has made possible a better knowledge of this pathology and above all the realization of new personalized therapies. The main therapeutic revolution in advanced NSCLC is immunooncology, a new therapeutic strategy that aims to awaken the immune system to fight cancer cells. Our work helped us evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of monotherapy with Nivolumab in the treatment of patients with advanced stage IIIB/IV non-smallcell lung cancer beyond the second line. We can conclude that in the treatment of non-small-cell lung cancer, the use of Nivolumab improves the prognosis a…

Italian Survey on adjuvant treatment of non-small cell lung cancer (ISA)

2011

Background: A recent pooled analysis of randomized trials indicated significant improvement in overall survival from cisplatin-based adjuvant chemotherapy for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), depending on disease stage (only in stages II and III) and PS (≤1). Post-operative radiotherapy (RT) is optional for pN2 tumours. Patients and methods: To evaluate opinions and daily clinical practice of Italian Oncologists about adjuvant treatment of NSCLC, a 46-item questionnaire was delivered via e-mail. Results: Seventy-eight physicians from 68 Centers (out of 98 contacted) returned their questionnaire. Seventy-four, 86, 94, and 78% of them give the indication for adjuvant chemotherapy for stage…

The prognostic impact of tumor mutational burden (TMB) in the first-line management of advanced non-oncogene addicted non-small-cell lung cancer (NSC…

2020

Background The role of tumor mutational burden (TMB) is still debated for selecting advanced non-oncogene addicted non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients who might benefit from immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs). Of note, TMB failed to predict a benefit in overall survival (OS) among such patients. Materials and methods The purpose of this meta-analysis was to compare efficacy outcomes among first-line immune-oncology (IO) agents versus standard platinum-based chemotherapy (CT) within two subgroups (TMB-low and TMB-high on either tissue or blood). We collected hazard ratios (HRs) to evaluate the association for progression-free survival (PFS) and OS, with the relative 95% confidence i…

High-dose radiotherapy for oligo-progressive NSCLC receiving EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors: Real world data

2020

Background/aim Local ablative treatments for oligo-progressive, EGFR mutated non-small cell lung cancer (mut-NCSLC) may improve long-term disease control and survival. We analyzed the efficacy of hypo-fractionated, high-dose radiation therapy (HDRT), in association with prolonged EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKI) in oligo-progressive, EGFR mutant-NSCLC. Patients and methods Progression-free survival-1 (PFS-1, date from initiation of TKI therapy until oligo-progression or death), and progression-free survival-2 (PFS-2, date of focal progression until further progression or death) were evaluated. Results Thirty-six patients were analyzed. The median PFS 1 was 12.5 months. HDHRT consisted …

Natural history of malignant bone disease in non-small cell lung cancer: Preliminary results of a multicenter bone metastasis survey

2013

e19084 Background: Bone metastases represent an increasing clinical problem in advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) as disease-related survival improves. This is a multicenter, retrospective survey aimed to explore the impact of bone involvement in this severe, life-threatening disease. Methods: Data on clinicopathology, skeletal outcomes, skeletal-related events (SREs), and bone-directed therapies for 421 deceased NSCLC patients (48.6% aged >66 years) with evidence of bone metastasis were statistically analyzed. Results: ECOG performance status at diagnosis of NSCLC was 0 in 41.4% of patients, 1 in 42.8% and 2 in 13.9%. The most frequent stage at diagnosis was IV (76.8%). Adenoc…

Evolution of Therapy Decision-Making Process for Advanced Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer

2010

Advanced non-small cell lung cancer remains a lethal disease with poor prognosis. In the last decades results of systemic chemotherapy have reached a disappointing plateau without significant differences between the most widely employed third-generation regimens. Recent scientific evidence has shed new light on the management of advanced non-small cell lung cancer, especially for the important role of histological definition in therapy-planning process. The results of new biologic agents are also reported as are the promising data on pharmacogenomic-guided treatment.

Abstract 4010: Prognostic role of miRNAs in resectable non-small cell lung cancer

2015

Proceedings: AACR 106th Annual Meeting 2015; April 18-22, 2015; Philadelphia, PA BACKGROUND MicroRNAs (miRNA) are a class of small RNAs that regulate gene expression, and are implicated in several diseases including cancer. The aim of this study was to analyze the prognostic implications of deregulated miRNAs identified by NGS in a previous study performed on resectable-NSCLC tumor samples. MATERIAL AND METHODS Fresh-frozen tumor and normal adjacent lung tissue samples (N = 195) were obtained by surgical resection from NSCLC patients and storage in RNAlater® at -80°C until analysis. RNA was isolated biological specimens by Trizol based-methods. 22 deregulated miRNA were analyzed in paired t…

Comparison between gemcitabine-based combination (G) and single-agent chemotherapy (S) for elderly patients (EP) with advanced non-small cell lung ca…

2007

19586 Background: It was estimated that a quarter of all patients who have a diagnosis of NSCLC worldwide are more than 70 years old. This meta-analysis tries to shed light on the controversial results of phase III trials evaluating in NSCLC EP doublets against third generation S. Methods: We performed a literature search using MEDLINE and Cochrane Library. We selected only clinical trials responding to the question of our meta-analysis. Outcomes recorded were 1-year survival rate (1-y SR), overall response rate (ORR) and haematological toxicity (HT). Fixed-effects and random-effects models were used to calculate pooled odds ratios (OR). An OR greater than 1 indicates that doublet is more …
