Genetic diversity in Cytisus aeolicus Guss. (Leguminosae), a rare endemite of the Italian flora

ABSTRACT Cytisus aeolicus Guss, is an endemic plant restricted to the isles of Vulcano, Stromboli and Alicudi in the Aeolian archipelago. All known populations were assayed for genetic variability using enzyme polymorphism. Allozyme variation at 16 loci coding for 10 enzyme systems was examined. The great majority of loci turned out to be monomorphic or fixed heterozygous. The observed genetic depauperation is indicative of historical factors, such as the bottleneck effect associated with migration, and the founder effect in population re-establishment. In intensively farmed, reclaimed areas (polders) of Mont-St-Michel Bay, France, bank voles (Clethrionomys glareolus) live in fragmented hedgerows, where populations are small and dispersal rates and genetic diversity are low. These small populations are likely to have been exposed to potential environmental and/or genetic stress. The sensitivity of development to stress can be measured by fluctuating asymmetry (FA). FA was calculated for three samples from a disturbed area and one sample from an adjacent, more connected and undisturbed landscape. Social predators benefit from cooperation in the form of increased hunting success, but may be at higher risk of disease infection due to living in groups. Here, we use mathematical modeling to investigate the impact of disease transmission on the population dynamics benefits provided by group hunting. We consider a predator-prey model with foraging facilitation that can induce strong Allee effects in the predators. We extend this model by an infectious disease spreading horizontally and vertically in the predator population. The model is a system of three nonlinear differential equations. Intraclonal variation in RNA viruses: generation, maintenance and consequences

This paper explores the evolutionary implications of the enormous variability that characterizes populations of RNA viruses and retroviruses. It begins by examining the magnitude of genetic variation in both natural and experimental populations. In natural populations, differences arise even within individual infected patients, with the per-site nucleotide diversity at this level ranging from <1% to 6%. In laboratory populations, two viruses sampled from the same clone differed by ∼0.7% in their fitness. Tripolium sorrentinoi (Todaro 1858: 42) Raimondo & Greuter (2005: 59) (Asteraceae) is a species endemic to Sicily. In this island, it grows on badlands in the Palermo, Enna, Caltanissetta, and Agrigento Provinces, between the coast and the hinterland mountains. Its phytogeographical interest is remarkable because it occurs in selective habitats, where it is often the sole phanerogamic inhabitant. Due to its small population size and to a continuing decline of mature individuals, T. sorrentinoi was assessed as “Vulnerable” (VU) according to the IUCN criteria (Domina & Troia 2016).
On sampling error in evolutionary algorithms

The initial population in evolutionary algorithms (EAs) should form a representative sample of all possible solutions (the search space). While large populations accurately approximate the distribution of possible solutions, small populations tend to incorporate a sampling error. A low sampling error at initialization is necessary (but not sufficient) for a reliable search since a low sampling error reduces the overall random variations in a random sample.
