Investigation of heavy ion produced defect structures in insulators by small angle scattering

1985

Fast heavy ions produce stable defects in most dielectrica. As examples mica, Polyethylenterephtalat and Polystyrol were irradiated with Ar, Ni, Kr, Xe and U ions in an energy range from 0.5 up to 20 MeV/u. The resulting defects were investigated by neutron and x-ray small-angle scattering. The ion beam supplied by the UNILAC accelerator at GSI Darmstadt is characterized by its small emittance, the well defined mass, charge and energy of the ions and their stochastical distribution in the phase space. In scattering experiments the system of scattering centers created by these ions causes a scattered intensity distribution which strongly depends on the orientation of the sample with respect …

Morphology evolution in mesoporous titania block copolymer composite films with increasing Sol-Gel reaction time

2013

A morphology evolution of thin films of titania from spherical mesopores to worm-shaped mesopores was realized by simply varying the sol–gel reaction time from 46 min to 25 h in the quadruple system consisting of polystyrene–block-poly(ethylene oxide) (PS–b-PEO), 1,4-dioxane, concentrated HCl, and titanium tetraisopropoxide (TTIP). Imaging techniques including scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) were applied to investigate the local structure change of the as-prepared, calcined, and UV-degraded composite films. Grazing incidence small angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS) experiments prove that the structure change in local areas is representative of that over the…

Low angle neutron scattering of ferritin studied by contrast variation.

1976

Ferritins containing different amounts of iron have been studied by neutron small angle scattering in H 2 O/D 2 O mixtures. Apoferritin has also been studied in solutions of small organic molecules. There is a larger contrast variation in the solutions of small organic molecules than in the corresponding H 2 O/D 2 O experiments from which it may be calculated that I g of apoferritin contains 0·3 g of H 2 O. The solvent composition at zero contrast varies regularly with the iron content of the protein: there is evidence for polydispersity in the iron content of the ferritin used. From analysis of the scattering curves it is concluded that the iron is probably not homogeneously distributed in…

Scaling in colloidal crystallization

1994

The process of colloidal crystallization has already been separately investigated by light scattering mearurements of the crystalline order (Bragg peaks) and of long-ranged density fluctuations (small-angle scattering). We present the firstsimultaneous small- and large-angle light scattering experiment. Our measurements have been performed on hard-sphere colloids of different particle densities. We show results for the temporal evolution of crystallization and find two distinct regimes: homogeneous nucleation and diffusion- or reaction-limited growth at early times, followed by ripening of the Lifshitz-Slyozov or Lifshitz-Allen-Cahn type. To our preliminary experience, we can already state …

Application of small angle neutron scattering to micellar fluids

1990

Abstract In this paper we present a short overview of the application of small angle neutron scattering (SANS) to micellar fluids. In the first part of the paper a general expression of the scattering equation is derived, with particular emphasis on the approximations involved and on their practical consequences. In the second part of the paper we present six selected test cases (such as mono- and polydisperse fluids, critical fluids, shapes other than spherical, etc.) taken from our own work, to demonstrate the kind of analysis performed in each case to extract the information from SANS data.

Competition between heterogeneous and homogeneous nucleation near a flat wall

2009

We studied the competition between heterogeneous and homogeneous nucleation of an aqueous suspension of charged colloidal spheres close to the container walls. Samples of equilibrium crystalline structure were shear-melted and the metastable melt left to solidify after the cessation of shear. The crystallization kinetics was monitored using time-resolved scattering techniques: at low particle number densities n we applied an improved static light scattering method while at large particle concentrations ultra-small-angle x-ray scattering was applied for the first time. Our results show some unexpected behavior: the heterogeneous nucleation at the container walls is delayed in comparison to t…
