A Physiological Approach to Analysing SME Growth Patterns and to Understanding the Distinctions and Similarities between Normal and Abnormal Growth

Building on earlier work on abnormal SME growth trajectories, this paper investigates to what extent the analysis can be extended to the study of an unusual but “normal” growth pattern. The detailed case histories of two firms which might be called micro-giants are presented. These are companies that would be categorised as small firms but are actually competing, and competing successfully, in non-niche markets with much larger firms, or even multinational giants. Improving institutions: Effects of small unit size on quality of care of people with severe intellectual disabilities

Two studies analysed the effects of small unit size of six to eight residents on the quality of care in institutions for people with intellectual disabilities. The results showed improvements in small units when compared with larger wards with 10 to 20 residents. Overall, the outcomes were small or modest, and the quality of care remained below standards typically achieved in community environments.

Alkoxysilyl substituted oligo(phenylenevinylene)s: chromophores with reactive side chains

The synthesis and properties of highly luminescent oligo(phenylenevinylene)s (OPV) with curable alkoxysilyl groups are described. Two diethoxymethylsilane moieties are connected directly or through flexible spacers to monodisperse alkoxy-substituted OPVs via hydrosilylation of alkinyl and allyloxy groups, Heck reaction with silylstyrene or condensation of aldehydes with aminopropyl silanes. Hydrolysis of the alkoxysilanes yields silanols condensing to curable three-dimensional networks, thus allowing the transformation of small molecules to transparent and fluorescent films with well-defined chromophores.

Hexagonal mesoporous silica (HMS) is functionalised with mercaptopropyl groups by adopting two different procedures ; co-condensation and grafting. In both cases tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) and 3-mercaptopropyltriethoxysilane (3-MPTES) are used as the silicon and sulfur precursors, respectively. The mitotic kinase Aurora-A promotes distant metastases by inducing epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition in ERα+ breast cancer cells

In this study, we demonstrate that constitutive activation of Raf-1 oncogenic signaling induces stabilization and accumulation of Aurora-A mitotic kinase that ultimately drives the transition from an epithelial to a highly invasive mesenchymal phenotype in estrogen receptor α-positive (ERα(+)) breast cancer cells. The transition from an epithelial- to a mesenchymal-like phenotype was characterized by reduced expression of ERα, HER-2/Neu overexpression and loss of CD24 surface receptor (CD24(-/low)).
