The Fluid City Experience: An Update

This chapter describes the actual status of thirteen European cities that become fluid cities through their strategies for urban regeneration. These cities are divided into three groups: the large port-cities, the medium rank “city-port” cities, the riverfront cities. For every city, we define the status of urban environment and population, the trend for port and airport traffic and the strategies for urban regeneration.

The level of interest in smart cities is growing, and the recent literature on this topic (Holland, 2008; Caragliu et al., 2009, Nijkamp et al., 2011 and Lombardi et al., 2012) identifies a number of factors that characterise a city as smart, such as economic development, environment, human capital, culture and leisure, and e-governance. At the end of 2012, the PON METRO National Scheme was set up in Italy, inspired by the EU Urban Agenda. It also allows towns like Palermo to test and reach targets of urban resilience, focusing on mobility and sustainable energy in order to improve life in the cities together with innovative policies of social inclusion. Celem artykułu jest identyfikacja działań podejmowanych w miastach o charakterze społecznym, ekonomicznym i środowiskowym oraz ocena ich zgodności z założeniami koncepcji zrównoważonego rozwoju. W artykule przytoczone zostały przykłady rozwoju różnych miast europejskich i pozaeuropejskich oraz efekty prowadzonej polityki miejskiej. Autorka starała się odpowiedzieć na pytanie, w jakim stopniu działania podejmowane w miastach są zgodne z zasadami zrównoważonego rozwoju i czy w przyszłości miasta staną się bardziej zrównoważone.
