This paper provides a theoretical model aimed at supporting the decision-making process for public real estate portfolio management. In a context of enduring financial constraints, Local Governments could manage the aforementioned process under the framework of the “Smart City…

Smart city initiatives, public real estate strategic management and new venture creation.

2015

During the last decade, academics have been involved in an interesting debate around the development of the so called Smart City Initiatives. In the prevailing mind-set, the success of the aforementioned initiatives has been based on pillars like ICT infrastructures, human capital, mobility, environment etc. This chapter focuses on the role played by public property assets within the framework of the Smart City initiatives, with a specific focus on those programs that aim to stimulate the creation of entrepreneurial ecosystem. More in detail, the research provides a theoretical and analytical scheme helping policy makers opt for the most suitable choices relating to the public property port…

Hierarchical Syntactic Models for Human Activity Recognition through Mobility Traces

2019

AbstractRecognizing users’ daily life activities without disrupting their lifestyle is a key functionality to enable a broad variety of advanced services for a Smart City, from energy-efficient management of urban spaces to mobility optimization. In this paper, we propose a novel method for human activity recognition from a collection of outdoor mobility traces acquired through wearable devices. Our method exploits the regularities naturally present in human mobility patterns to construct syntactic models in the form of finite state automata, thanks to an approach known asgrammatical inference. We also introduce a measure ofsimilaritythat accounts for the intrinsic hierarchical nature of su…

Resilience, Smartness and sustainability. Towards a new paradigm?

2019

The urbanization and the vulnerability of a city make challenging the ability of remaining along a sustainable development path. From a sustainability point of view, the smartness concept has been enlarged up to incorporate the definition of sustainable development with the so-called smart and sustainable cities. Another aspect is gaining importance in this debate: the growing challenges posed by climate change and by environmental issue at large. This issue has forced governments and in particular cities, which represent the main place for the prevention and the implementation of initiatives against negative environmental events, to develop flexible and resilient actions, initiatives and p…

Rotterdam Smart Delta City

2017

A framework for IoT service experiment platforms in smart-city environments

2016

Cities provide an excellent platform for gathering and detection of massive amount of data from cities and citizens. Emergence of new digital technologies inspires not only city governments but also city residents, researchers, companies and other stakeholders in discovering and creating new innovative solutions to solve urban challenges and improve peoples´ everyday life. Developing novel Internet of Things (IoT) solutions for cities and citizens requires facilities where IoT applications and services can be tested and experimented. The challenge for many smart-city test and experimentation platforms (TEPs), like living labs, has been the lack of sustainable value creation model. This has …

Il Paesaggio al centro?

2017

The utopian abstraction about urban …

Adaptive cities, communities and technology

2017

Augmented City : a Paradigm Shift

2017

Augmented City is a spatial/cultural/social/economic platform for enhancing our contemporary life, individual and collective, informal and institutional. If we live and act in a reality permanently improved by hard and soft devices, our cities must be more responsive to our behavioral changes. In incoming Neo-Anthropocene cities are " vibrant organisms of space and community, of data and information, of sensors and actuators, of actions and reactions, of urban/rural metabolism generated by people and environment both.
