Scheduling Domestic Shiftable Loads in Smart Grids: A Learning Automata-Based Scheme

2017

In this paper, we consider the problem of scheduling shiftable loads, over multiple users, in smart grids. We approach the problem, which is becoming increasingly pertinent in our present energy-thirsty society, using a novel distributed game-theoretic framework. From a modeling perspective, the distributed scheduling problem is formulated as a game, and in particular, a so-called “Potential” game. This game has at least one pure strategy Nash Equilibrium (NE), and we demonstrate that the NE point is a global optimal point. The solution that we propose, which is the pioneering solution that incorporates the theory of Learning Automata (LA), permits the total supplied loads to approach the p…

Guided hierarchical co-assembly of soft patchy nanoparticles.

2013

Different polymers can be used in combination to produce coexisting nanoparticles of different symmetry and tailored to co-assemble into well-ordered binary and ternary hierarchical structures. There is considerable practical interest in developing the tools to fabricate multicomponent artificial systems that mimic the hierarchical ordering seen in the natural world — complex biomaterials can be assembled from the simple but precisely defined molecular building blocks. Andre Groschel and colleagues have developed a bottom-up approach that's a step in that direction. Previously they designed simple linear polymers that self-assemble in solution to produce monodisperse nanoparticles with well…

Energy evaluation and life cycle assessment of an innovative building integrated technology: the smart window-luminescent solar concentrator

2022

Luminescent Solar Concentrators (LSC) represent one of the innovative and potentially most versatile technologies related to Building Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV). The peculiarity of these devices lies in the fact that they can be integrated into the surface of the building to replace openings such as skylights or windows, thanks to their characteristic of being semi-transparent and of functioning both with direct and diffused radiation. Eni developed the own technology Eni Ray Plus® based on LSC and integrated it in a multifunctional smart window-LSC (SW-LSC) prototype. The device uses the energy produced by LSC modules to power an autonomous and passive shading system, exploiting irrad…

Dealing with missing participants in the opening phases of a videoconference

2023

Abstract The paper explores the social interaction that takes place during the initial phases of videoconferences. The focus is on the problem of absent participants, which is often considered a reason for delaying the official beginning of the meeting. One of the resources that the participants have is to reach the absent participant by cellphone. We observed a recurrent pattern of action whereby one of the participants disengages from the video meeting to reach the missing person by phone. This negotiation process moves through four steps: (1) the detection of the problem, (2) the offer to call the missing person by one participant, (3) the acceptance of this offer by the moderator, and (…

PRIVACY-PRESERVING METERING AND LOAD CONTROL IN SMART GRID

In the last decade, electrical grids have experienced an impressive evolution towards the so called Smart Grids, inspired by the Internet model. Indeed, the main driver for this evolution is the exploitation of communication networks for enabling the integration of renewable energy sources and making the energy demand closer to the time-varying production. While witnessing to the incremental deployment of Smart Grids and novel services for Smart Grids, we note a growing awareness on the risks associated to the collection of many sensitive users data. For example, monitoring the temporal trace of the energy consumption data of a given residential customer, may reveal a lot of information on …

A Coexistence Analysis of Blockchain, SCADA Systems, and OpenADR for Energy Services Provision

2022

The advent of blockchain technology allows the raise of new business models for the electricity market, opening the way also to end-users and letting them offer regulation services to the power grid. Thanks to the characteristic of being distributed, the blockchain technology could be a solution to balancing problems caused by the penetration of renewable sources, implementing a platform for Demand-Response programs delivery. Demand-Response allows consumers to respond to market signals by increasing or reducing their energy consumption, contributing to greater flexibility and stability of the grid and to a more efficient use of infrastructures and energy resources. Currently, Demand-Respon…

Luminescent Solar Concentrator (LSC): preliminary phases of the LCA analysis applied to the Smart Window-LSC

2019

Luminescent solar concentrators (LSC) represent one of the innovative technologies related to Building Integrated PhotoVoltaics (BIPV). T hanks to their characteristic of being semi-transparent and of functioning both with direct and diffused radiation, the se devices can be integrated to the surface of the buildings, in particular in replacement of openings such as skylights or windows. They do not require solar tracking systems that are used in classic solar concentrators and allow reducing the presence of silicon compared to traditional photovoltaic panels.

A M3G Talking Head for Smartphones

2011

Often customer information services or virtual support guides make use of friendly interface to facilitate human-machine interaction. Indeed, virtual guided tours or helpdesks use a talking anthropomorphic head to communicate with the user. In this paper, we present a talking head for Smart phones, PDAs and, in general, all the mobile devices able to support J2ME and MIDP protocol. The objective of this article is to illustrate how to make such an interface as portable as possible by maximizing the limited computational resources of these devices.

Large deflection analysis of magneto-electro-elastic laminates

2013

Magneto-electro-elastic (MEE) composites containing piezoelectric and piezo-magnetic phases have recently emerged for many application smart structures technology. In this framework, the development of tools to analyze the MEE laminates is essential for their efficient design. In the present work, a model for the large deflection analysis of MEE laminated plates is proposed. The first order shear deformation theory and the von Karman stress function approach are employed to model the mechanical behavior whereas quasi-static behavior is assumed for the electro-magnetic quantities. First, the magneto-electric problem is solved in terms of the plate mechanical primary variables. In turn, this …
