Design and Prototyping of a Smart University Campus

2019

The authors propose a framework to support the “smart planning” of a university environment, intended as a “smart campus.” The main goal is to improve the management, storage, and mining of information coming from the university areas and main players. The platform allows for interaction with the main players of the system, generating and displaying useful data in real time for a better user experience. The proposed framework provides also a chat assistant able to respond to user requests in real time. This will not only improve the communication between university environment and students, but it allows one to investigate on their habits and needs. Moreover, information collected from the …

Università e Smart City

2013

Disentangling Housing Supply to Shift towards Smart Cities: Analysing Theoretical and Empirical Studies

2022

The search for a pleasant home has concerned people ever since. Paradoxically, people are facing strong difficulties in finding a decent place to settle their lives in cities. As such, the housing market regained momentum in connection with the development of Smart Cities, where life quality of residents is strongly emphasized. Well-being in the metropolis is affected by a wide variety of factors with housing supply being among the most important, hence stirred by financing costs, construction costs, vacancy rate, sales delay, inflation rate, housing stock, price of agricultural land, and regulation. The present article reviews empirical studies on housing supply for a better understanding …

Editorial: Interrogating the design of smart, sustainable, and socially just urban spaces: A look at institutions, places, and values

2022

The article is the Editorial on the Research Topic Interrogating the design of smart, sustainable, and socially just urban spaces: A look at institutions, places, and values, which explore the dynamics between the socio-technological processes – value-based design being foremost among them – through which urban space emerges and takes on meaning. Furthermore, they engage with the question of how institutional design principles shape citizen participation in these processes.

Defining Smart Cities: a relative and dynamic approach

2016

Although the level of interest in smart cities is growing, the main issue – the smart city concept – is still open. The definition of smart city is not shared as well as the way to measure city’s smartness. The main approach has developed the concept of an “ideal” city which every city should tend because it represents the optimal standard. In this context, the aim of our paper is to break with the traditional point of view in favour of a new concept of smartness which identifies a city specific value of smartness, based on the efficient use of its own resources and related to the different context in which a city is situated. Thus, in this way, the concept of smartness becomes relative. Mo…

Designing mobility in a city in transition : challenges from the case of Palermo

2014

Transport policy is one of the most crucial sectors in the process of adaptation of contemporary cities to the challenge of sustainable development. For its close relation with social habits and people behaviors, in fact, innovation in transports play a strategic role both in the decreasing of the environmental impact of mobility and in the improvement of the quality of the built environment. To do so, however, cities need to reach a more effective integration between transport policy and land-use planning, as well as taking full advantage by the spreading of new technologies. In this context, this paper discusses the challenges provided by the reshaping of the transport system in the metro…

Manipolazione tipologica

2021

The team, since the early stages of the project, has worked with the will to seize, in collaboration and multidisciplinary dialogue, an opportunity for cultural and scientific growth to achieve shared solutions. The regeneration of the area subject of this study has assumed four elementary actions as operational tools declined to the urban, architectural and technological scale: include, subtract, add and connect. In Tor Bella Monaca, the lack of sense of urbanity is the real cause of environmental discomfort. The size, the layout and the position of the large residential units deprive the inhabitants of a sense of belonging to the city that has been reformulated by reorganizing the greener…

Smart Technologies for the Environmental Design of Smaller Urban Centres

2020

The present study focuses on welfare measures and specifically on healthcare. The challenge we would like to accept is to provide efficient healthcare to residents in an isolated area without health services, maintaining the same level of healthcare ensured by hospitals. The innovative design, that we want to experience, is closely linked to the use of ICT, information and communication technologies, because these technologies would be able to perform autonomously multiple functions, using remote control. Telemedicine or “virtual health” is a particular branch of ICT that can improve future quality of living in a marginal urban center as a tool to ensure prompt access to expert advice, as w…
