Experimental Evaluation on Narrow Band Power Line Communication in Medium and Low Voltage Smart Grids
2013
The aim of this work is to perform a feasibility study on the power line communication for the development of a new generation of interface devices (IDs) for smart grid and energy storage applications. More in detail, this paper deals with one of the most important issues on this topic, which is the communication system. Among the existing communication technologies, the study is focused on power line communications (PLCs). After an analysis of the state of the art in the field, the main aspects are analyzed, concerning the open issues on the use of PLCs, especially for medium voltage (MV) and low voltage (LV) systems. In this work the use of PLC in MV-LV networks is investigated, by means …

A Cooperative Multi-Agent System for Crowd Sensing Based Estimation in Smart Cities
2020
The concept of Smart City has spread as a solution to ensure better access to information and services to citizens, but also as a means to reduce the environmental footprint of cities. To this end, a continuous and wide observation of the environment is necessary to analyze information that enables government bodies to act on the environment appropriately. Moreover, a diffused acquisition of information requires adequate infrastructure and proper devices, which results in relevant installation and maintenance costs. Our proposal enables reducing the number of necessary sensors to be deployed while ensuring that information is available at any time and anywhere. We present the HybridIoT syst…
Palermo Living Lab on the road
2017
Data Compensation with Gaussian Processes Regression: Application in Smart Building's Sensor Network
2022
Data play an essential role in the optimal control of smart buildings’ operation, especially in building energy-management for the target of nearly zero buildings. The building monitoring system is in charge of collecting and managing building data. However, device imperfections and failures of the monitoring system are likely to produce low-quality data, such as data loss and inconsistent data, which then seriously affect the control quality of the buildings. This paper proposes a new approach based on Gaussian process regression for data-quality monitoring and sensor network data compensation in smart buildings. The proposed method is proven to effectively detect and compensate for low-qu…
The Impact of Smart City Initiatives on Human Rights : A Qualitative Research Study
2019
Master's thesis Information Systems IS501 - University of Agder 2019 Context:A smart city is a concept where municipalities use ICTto increase efficiency, sustainability and quality of life forits citizensand city operations. Smart city initiatives useIoT technologies, enabled by ICTs to gather large volumesof unstructured data, known as BigData. The aim of any smart city initiativeisto increase thequality of lifein acity, but posesa threat tocitizens privacy, security andfreedom of expressiondue to the large volumes of databeing collected in smart cities, potentially violatingfundamental rightsin theUniversal Declaration of Human Rights.Purpose:This thesis investigatesthe connection between s…
Digital rights management : blockchain and digital music content management
2017
Tämän tutkielman tarkoituksena oli ymmärtää lohkoketjuteknologian vaikutuksia digitaalisen musiikin sisällönhallintaan hyödyntäen digitaalisten tekijänoikeuden hallintajärjestelmien (DRM) viitekehystä. Tutkielma sisälsi kolme tutkimuskysymystä: mitä digitaalisia tekijänoikeuden hallintajärjestelmien haasteita lohkoketjuteknologia voisi mahdollisesti ratkaista verrattuna edellisiin DRM-teknologioihin, miten lohkoketjuteknologia liittyy DRM:n aiempiin teknologisiin haasteisiin ja mitkä ovat lohkoketjuteknologian mahdolliset vaikutukset digitaalisen musiikin tekijänoikeuden hallintajärjestelmiin. Vastaukset tutkimuskysymyksiin perustuivat kirjallisuuskatsaukseen sekä puolistrukturoituihin teem…
Improving Smart City Design : A Conceptual Model for Governing Complex Smart City Ecosystems
2018
Smart city concept is a viable nominee to solve the dilemmas urbanization creates globally. By means of digital technologies like Internet-of-Things, artificial intelligence and data analytics cities aim to optimize city performances like mobility, environment, security, health care and social services. Furthermore, cities actively endorse usage of digital technologies to foster digitalization and new business innovation to nurture local economy and social well-being. Smart city market is growing, but simultaneously fragmented smart city markets and initiatives face challenges with governance, ecosystem orchestration and continuity. Transformation to smart city is a complex long-term proces…

Context-sensitive distraction warnings : effects on drivers' visual behavior and acceptance
2016
In this study, we investigated the effects of context-sensitive distraction warnings on drivers' in-car glance behaviors and acceptance. The studied prototype warning application functions on a smart phone. The novelty of the application is its proactive and context-sensitive approach to the adjustment of warning thresholds according to the estimated visual demands of the driving situation ahead. In our study, novice and experienced drivers conducted in-car tasks with a smart phone on a test track with and without the warnings. The application gave a warning if the driver's gaze was recognized to remain on the smart phone over a situation-specific threshold time, or if the driver was approa…
