L'Economista Anglofilo. Paolo Balsamo e l'utopia liberale in Sicilia (1787-1816)
2023
Paolo Balsamo -economist and professor of University of Palermo from 1787 to 1812- was a traveller and expert in the most advanced and modern British and European agriculture. He wrote articles and essays, both in English and Italian, on agriculture and political economy and was a correspondent of important cultural and political circles of British Whiggism. As a member of the Sicilian Parliament, ideologist of the constitutional party and trusted collaborator of Lord Bentinck, he wrote the Sicilian Constitution of 1812 which reformed the old institution of the Kingdom of Sicily transforming it into a liberal State. This monography explores Balsamo's intellectual and political figure throug…
Paolo Balsamo, Smithianism and the Birth of Liberalism in Sicily
2020
The article focuses on the transition process of Sicily, between the end of 18th century and the beginning of 19th, from the Ancien Regime to a modern society, underlining the intellectual and political role of the Sicilian economist Paolo Balsamo. The professor of Agriculture and Economics at University of Palermo founded the Sicilian liberalism on Adam Smith’s works and tried to reform the institutions of the island aiming to make them the model of a Smithian nation. The article analyses Balsamo’s work by highlighting the interlacement of culture, social interests and political emergencies, all of which had an effect on how Smithianism was adopted in Sicily.
Intrecci preziosi Arti Decorative Siciliane a Malta 1565-1798
2016
The book deals with Sicilian artifacts and artists almost entirely unpublished active on the Island of Knights in t…
Polynomimatriisit
2014
Coming up Roses
2022
Discussing two short stories by contemporary Scottish author Ali Smith, my article recommends a close reading of short prose narratives as potential examples of ungendered character-narration. I combine queer and unnatural narrative theory to consider how forms of telling contribute to gender ambiguity. Further, I advocate interpretative strategies that resist naturalization and causal explanations. Instead, a queer reading of Smith’s “erosive” (2003) and “The beholder” (2015) delights in their ambiguity, waywardness, and narrative inventiveness. The texts can be approached as exercises in unknowing.
Keywords: queer narratology, unnatural narratology, ungendering, narrative voice, cau…
Secrets and ethics in Ali Smith's novel The Accidental
2014
Tutkielma käsittelee Ali Smithin (s. 1962) romaania The Accidental (2005, suomennettu 2006 nimellä Satunnainen) salaisuuksien ja etiikan näkökulmasta.
Faster GPU-Accelerated Smith-Waterman Algorithm with Alignment Backtracking for Short DNA Sequences
2014
In this paper, we present a GPU-accelerated Smith-Waterman (SW) algorithm with Alignment Backtracking, called GSWAB, for short DNA sequences. This algorithm performs all-to-all pairwise alignments and retrieves optimal local alignments on CUDA-enabled GPUs. To facilitate fast alignment backtracking, we have investigated a tile-based SW implementation using the CUDA programming model. This tiled computing pattern enables us to more deeply explore the powerful compute capability of GPUs. We have evaluated the performance of GSWAB on a Kepler-based GeForce GTX Titan graphics card. The results show that GSWAB can achieve a performance of up to 56.8 GCUPS on large-scale datasets. Furthermore, ou…
SWAPHI: Smith-Waterman Protein Database Search on Xeon Phi Coprocessors
2014
The maximal sensitivity of the Smith-Waterman (SW) algorithm has enabled its wide use in biological sequence database search. Unfortunately, the high sensitivity comes at the expense of quadratic time complexity, which makes the algorithm computationally demanding for big databases. In this paper, we present SWAPHI, the first parallelized algorithm employing Xeon Phi coprocessors to accelerate SW protein database search. SWAPHI is designed based on the scale-and-vectorize approach, i.e. it boosts alignment speed by effectively utilizing both the coarse-grained parallelism from the many co-processing cores (scale) and the fine-grained parallelism from the 512-bit wide single instruction, mul…
