An alternative conception of PM10 concentration changes after short-term precipitation in urban environment

Abstract In the article, a linear model is presented which describes a reduction of PM10 mass concentration in relation to the type of precipitation and water vapour content in the air. The model was built using covariance analysis. In studies of PM10 concentration changes, the results of 247 observations were used, which were carried out in the urban area. Concentration changes were archived during short-term (30 min) convection and large-scale rainfalls. For the determination of PM10 mass concentration, the reference method was used. Biomechanics of simulated versus natural cross-country sit skiing

The purpose of this study was to investigate the biomechanics of cross-country sit-skiing in simulated and natural skiing. Thirteen international level athletes participated in a ski ergometer test (simulated conditions) and a test on snow in a ski-tunnel (natural conditions) using their personal sit-ski. Tests in both conditions were performed at individual maximal speed. When comparing the two conditions the main results were: (1) maximal speed in simulated conditions was lower (p < 0.05) but correlated well with the natural condition (r = 0.79, p < 0.001); (2) no differences in pole force variables were found; peak force (r = 0.77, p < 0.01) and average force (r = 0.78, p < 0.01) correla…

Abstract Non-target screening of secondary organic aerosol compounds in ice cores is used to reconstruct atmospheric conditions and sources and is a valuable tool to elucidate the chemical profiles of samples with the aim to obtain as much information as possible from one mass spectrometric measurement. A branch-and-cut algorithm for the Profitable Windy Rural Postman Problem

[EN] In this paper we study the profitable windy rural postman problem. This is an arc routing problem with profits defined on a windy graph in which there is a profit associated with some of the edges of the graph, consisting of finding a route maximizing the difference between the total profit collected and the total cost. This problem generalizes the rural postman problem and other well-known arc routing problems and has real-life applications, mainly in snow removal operations. Investigating snowcover volumes and icings dynamics in the moraine of an Arctic catchment using UAV/ photogrammetry and LiDAR

Cloud screening with combined MERIS and AATSR images

This paper presents a cloud screening algorithm based on ensemble methods that exploits the combined information from both MERIS and AATSR instruments on board ENVISAT in order to improve current cloud masking products for both sensors. The first step is to analyze the synergistic use of MERIS and AATSR images in order to extract some physically-based features increasing the separability of clouds and surface. Abstract An experiment in the Mainz vertical Cloud Tunnel is described in which natural and laboratory-made aggregates of snow crystals (snow flakes) were melted under free fall conditions in the vertical air stream of the tunnel, which was allowed to warm up at the rates experienced by falling snow flakes in the atmosphere. The variation of the fall mode, the fall velocity, and the percentage of ice melted, as a function of percentage of distance travelled for 99% melting was recorded by cinematography. Observations of atmospheric chemical deposition to high Arctic snow

Abstract. Rapidly rising temperatures and loss of snow and ice cover have demonstrated the unique vulnerability of the high Arctic to climate change. There are major uncertainties in modelling the chemical depositional and scavenging processes of Arctic snow. To that end, fresh snow samples collected on average every 4 days at Alert, Nunavut, from September 2014 to June 2015 were analyzed for black carbon, major ions, and metals, and their concentrations and fluxes were reported. High-speed intensified video recordings of sprites and elves over the western Mediterranean Sea during winter thunderstorms

We report the first intensified high‐speed video images of elves, sprites, and halos observed in Europe. All the events corresponded to winter season thunderstorms over the Mediterranean Sea. The observations comprise many elves generated by both cloud‐to‐ground lightning current polarities. In 8 of the 14 sprite observations we observed an elve previous to the sprite. In three cases we observed also an elve quickly followed by a halo and a sprite. In several observations we observed lightning light before the mesospheric transient luminous event.
