Effect of genes, social experience, and their interaction on the courtship behaviour of transgenic Drosophila males

Behaviour depends (a) on genes that specify the neural and non-neural elements involved in the perception of and responses to sensory stimuli and (b) on experience that can modulate the fine development of these elements. We exposed transgenic and control Drosophila melanogaster males, and their hybrids, to male siblings during adult development and measured the contribution of genes and of experience to their courtship behaviour. The evolution of parasite virulence and host defences is affected by population structure. This effect has been confirmed in studies focusing on large spatial scales, whereas the importance of local structure is not well understood. Slavemaking ants are social parasites that exploit workers of another species to rear their offspring. No synergy needed: ecological constraints favor the evolution of eusociality.

In eusocial species, some individuals sacrifice their own reproduction for the benefit of others. It has been argued that the evolution of sterile helpers in eusocial insects requires synergistic efficiency gains through cooperation that are uncommon in cooperatively breeding vertebrates and that this precludes a universal ecological explanation of social systems with alloparental care. Abstract Flanks were added to Titchener's (1901) T-illusion figure to test its susceptibility to context stimuli. The addition of a second divided line yielded H-type figures, and the addition of a second undivided line, +-type figures. The lengths of the Ts' undivided lines was expected to be overestimated relative to the lengths of the divided lines, when all lines were about equally long, and the illusion was expected to become smaller when one or two gaps had been introduced between the lines. Changes in the structure of the agonistic behavior of mice produced by D-amphetamine.

The effects of three acute doses of D-amphetamine (0.25, 1.5 and 3 mg/kg) were studied in a model of isolation-induced aggression in male mice. An ethopharmacological analysis of the encounters was carried out, which studied the frequency, total and mean duration of different behavioral categories, including the temporal distribution of attacks and the duration of inter-attack intervals. The novelty-seeking phenotype modulates the long-lasting effects of adolescent MDMA exposure.
