1999
Reflections on the conditions, contents and methodology of the social history of Catalan, reflections which deal with the 19th and 20th centuries, but go beyond these periods. From a perspective close to that of the sociology of knowledge, the author points out the limitations that threaten the status of this discipline. He points out some problems both in method and exegesis, such as access to data, reliability of these data, interdisciplinary collaboration, the conceptual scope of linguistic change, the distinction between facts and interpretations, and periodization.
The work analyses how of suitable are the periodizations of the history of …
Projecting the spread of COVID-19 for Germany
2020
We model the evolution of the number of individuals that are reported to be sick with COVID-19 in Germany. Our theoretical framework builds on a continuous time Markov chain with four states: healthy without infection, sick, healthy after recovery or after infection but without symptoms and dead. Our quantitative solution matches the number of sick individuals up to the most recent observation and ends with a share of sick individuals following from infection rates and sickness probabilities. We employ this framework to study inter alia the expected peak of the number of sick individuals in a scenario without public regulation of social contacts. We also study the effects of public regulati…
Public policies for the elderly from a human rights based approach
2021
Utilizing ICT to prevent loneliness and social isolation of the elderly. A literature review
2016
Ageing of the population is a worldwide phenomenon. Numerous ICT-based solutions have been developed for elderly care but mainly connected to the physiological and nursing aspects in services for the elderly. Social work is a profession that should pay attention to the comprehensive wellbeing and social needs of the elderly. Many people experience loneliness and depression in their old age, either as a result of living alone or due to a lack of close family ties and reduced connections with their culture of origin, which results in an inability to participate actively in community activities (Singh & Misra, 2009). Participation in society would enhance the quality of life. With the deve…
Polish contemporary art to the anti-semitism of Poles and its political significance
2016
Abstract This article presents artistic creativity which worked through the problem of Polish anti-Semitism. Almost all discussed works, performances, films, projects appeared after 2000, when Jan Tomasz Gross published his book Neighbors, in which he described the massacre in the village of Jedwabne (1941) launching a public debate about the responsibility of Poles in the Holocaust of the Jews. In the text, I showed as art, which is conventionally called “post-Jedwabne” was part of this debate. Its political status on possibly general level was associated primarily with the revision of conventionalized historical memory and national identity formed on romantic patterns. The text shows that…
